  1. Well, I"m 36 and was just dx a few months ago. Celiac can be triggered by any number of things. While you may have had it your entire life, it may not manifest itself until after some sort of trauma, life stage change, or other health issue. Mine was triggered by my 3rd pregnancy. I have no idea why.... it was an easy pregnancy, easy delivery....but I got...
  2. Ok, so I tried the chocolate one today. And, I've been sick all day. =( I don't know what's in it that's making me sick, but I feel like death warmed over. I'm sure it "could" be something else, but I felt great before I drank it... and about 20 minutes after, i started feeling icky. Casein, perhaps?? Great, one more thing I may need to remove from...
  3. Welcome! A gluten free diet is scary, but certainly do-able. While there is a difference between a Celiac diagnosis and Gluten Intolerance, the end result is the same...they both require a gluten free diet. Our two younger children (ages 5 and 14 months) are both gluten free. My daughter has a "confirmed" gluten intolerance, while my baby is gluten...
  4. *Peek A Boo* Hi Amy! =)
  5. Dr. William Buser - GI - Gastrointestinal Center of Kansas City & Dr. Jose Cocjin - Pediatric GI - University of Kansas Medical Center
  6. Yep, they are lactose free, but most definitely not milk or casein free. =( I'm lactose intol - so I "should" be able to drink them. We shall see. My husband picked me up some last night. I haven't tried them yet.
  7. You had me at cheesecake...but lost me with the nut crust. =( It sounds yummy though!!! =)
  8. I agree with Matilda. Our baby is free of wheat, barley, rye, and oats. He's never been tested, but it was obvious that those foods were making him sick. His pediatrician feels he's too young to be tested reliably. And, that's fine - we'll go through gene testing when he's older. But, as it is now... he simply isn't fed foods that I know make him sick...
  9. I don't have the answer to that question. But, my daughter "seems" to have developmental issues. In fact, we are taking her in for a formal evaluation with our school district next week. She's 5 - and should have started kindergarten this fall. But, due to her size (she's the size of a normal 3 year old) and her health concerns, we decided (with our pediatricians...
  10. I like Glutino pretzels, but all the other "treats" that I've tried I've really not liked. For muffins and cupcake type things, as well as donuts... I'll opt for the Kinnikinnick brand. =)
  11. A glutening happens immediately after the gluten containing food passes your lips! The answer will vary according to who you are, how sick you are, how well you are, how much you ate... etc. But, as someone who just did something very dumb... I will tell you, I am suffering from severe dizziness, nausea, my stomach is KILLING me, I can barely stand up...
  12. I'm not sure why it would matter. I agree, it seems like semantics to me. While neither one of us are dx'd with Celiac, we both are gluten intolerant. Both issues require the exact same diet, so it really doesn't matter what it's called. (My daughter IS allergic to wheat, though!)
  13. Kansan here. However, I'm a 36 year old mother of three, so I don't qualify as being "your age." But, I am gluten intolerant and my daughter is "confirmed" intolerant, while my baby (14 months) is on a gluten-free diet as preventative measure as recommended by his pediatrician. I'm still very new to this, my daughter went gluten-free in June. I'm often...
  14. I am. I'll be there unless something happens to prevent me from coming. I usually bring my daughter with me, but I think this time she may just stay home and bug her brothers. She loves going to the CSA meetings, but this one might be a little "dry" for a 5 year old. =)
  15. My daughter has had an anaphylactic reaction to peanut butter, we avoid peanuts, all nuts, and seeds like the plague. With peanut allergy, it's seldom outgrown and it tends to get worse with each exposure. I carry epi pends, benedryl, and she wears a medic alert bracelet. FWIW - "classes" with regards to RAST allergy testing mean nothing. The theory...
  16. This is a recipe I make for my daughter every year for her birthday: Ingredients: 2 3/4 cup flour **Note** I've never tried it with gluten-free flour, I'm going to this evening!!! 1 1/4 cup sugar 2 tspn baking powder 1 tspn baking soda 1/2 tspn salt 1 cup orange juice 1/2 cup oil 2 large ripe mashed bananas (about 1 cup) 1/2 tspn grated orange...
  17. If your allergist is anything like mine...they'll do a RAST test first. It's actually quite a bit easier on the child to have a 20 second blood draw, instead of the pricks on the back - and the waiting. If there are issues that aren't addressed AFTER the rast, our allergist will then investigate further. Thankfully, with our little one (who had just turned...
  18. Hey, for those of us who do go... we should wear some sort of identifying "something-or-other" so we can find each other and meet up! Anyone interested in doing that?? =) I just don't know anyone else in the world, personally, who is gluten-free. It would be nice to!
  19. Hiya! I'm a member of the Kansas City CSA Chapter...and wanted to pass this on, in case any of you are in the area! The Kansas City and Topeka Chapters of the Celiac Sprue Association are hosting a special presentation, "Gluten-Sensitivity and Other Inflammatory Aspects of Our Modern World: An Introduction to 'Anti-Inflammatory Living' " given by Dr. Kenneth...
  20. How old is the child? I've been through allergy testing with all three of mine, and the approach often depends on the age. If the child is really young (and small) they will do a RAST panel for most allergens. It actually doesn't involve "alot" of blood. My 13 month old just had a "complete" RAST panel - environmental and food, and they only took one...
  21. The Wild Oats on 119th Street is much larger and has a much larger selection. I also shop at the Whole Foods on Metcalf... and the Hy-Vee in Mission. You can only find the gluten-free foods in their "health food" area though. They aren't out in the main grocery area. Jessica - I swear one of these days we are going to walk right by each other in the...
  22. My response is my opinion ONLY. OK. That's my disclaimer! =) My personal opinion.... if your test is a mild positive, it's positive. It's like a pregnancy test, you are either pregnant or your not. You can't be "a little pregnant." If the endoscopy is soley to look for Celiac damage... I would NOT do it. Both my daughter and I have had endoscopies...
  23. LOVE Burt's Bees!!! =)
  24. I really liked the gingerbread ones too. The snickerdoodles are good, but I didn't much care for the chocolate chip. Have you tried their snack bars?? My kids and I LOVE the carmel apple bars. They are quite tasty!
  25. I didn't see it!!! I was at a cubscout meeting with my son, and just got home!!! DRATS!!! I saw Dr. Green in Stanford, he was awesome....very funny, but he DID push the biopsy at that point. I'm kind of surprised to read that he didn't. I wish I could have seen it. Heading to see if I can find a replay of it on the cbs website.....
