ARCHIVED Should I Take This As Proof I'm Gluten Intolerant?
Jestgar replied to diapason05's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What you describe is EXACTLY what happens to me when I eat gluten. My throat also had that tickle until the entire back of my throat swelled up and I could hardly breathe. My guess is if you eat enough gluten you will start vomiting, and when I did my whole face swelled up and I looked like a cabbage patch kid. And what kind of doctor would just assume... -

ummm, yeah. But I think the dingo started it... -
I'd also like to point out that they can only biopsy the top third of your intestine. Although everyone (researchers) say that damage will occur first in this section, I've never seen any autopsy studies showing that people with suspected Celiac had no damage in any other part of their small intestine. It's like looking for your keys only where the light...

ARCHIVED Are Masseur Oils gluten-free Safe ?
Jestgar replied to georgie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Georgie, I questioned this as well. After a massage I had a full on gluten reaction. I went so far as to write the company from which my massage practitioner buys her oils, but I never got a response. I've gotten massages from her many times and only once did I have that reaction and she always uses the same oil. Her explanation was that maybe the... -

WooHoo!! checked off everything on my to do list! Just collecting up my homework and letting my hair down (which now strongly resembles muppet hair) and heading out for the boat. From my mom: The Seamstress >One day, when a seamstress was sewing while sitting close to a river, >her thimble fell into the river. When she cried out, the Lord... -
Your body responds with different antibodies. Allergy is IgE. Intolerance is IgG/IgA (and some IgM). In terms of how you treat them, it's the same - avoidance.

The true answer is: No one knows. It's all just theory at this point.

OK, heading to the bench to do lots of lab work. I just wanted you all to know that I just got my hair cut, and when I'm working at the bench it falls in my face. Since I can't touch anything with my hands I have to pull it back in a ponytail. Here's where the 'funny pages' part comes in. Since the front part is so short, in order to keep the small pieces... -

Whine.... I can't believe they actually expect me to work now that I'm back from vacation. Here it, 5:30, and I'm trying to decide what would be the most useful thing to take home and work on. Keep up the humor. I'm using it to get me through this "expectations" phase of my boss. PS. AGA! is what I say when I finally understand what a confusing... -

You know, if you're NOT nice to them, they stick around. If you want to get rid of a man, try treating him like you like him. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Live In Or Near Port Angeles, Wa
Jestgar replied to Shez30's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If you just take a day trip from Seattle, Town & Country Market is within walking distance and they have brown rice tortillas, almond crackers, frozen gluten-free breads, and the salad bar has all ingredients marked on the salads (including 'wheat' when soy sauce was used). -
ARCHIVED Travelling To Europe
Jestgar replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I ate a lot of fruit and veggies from grocery stores and markets. Most plain potato chips are gluten-free. Most lunch meats are gluten-free. Cheeses are good and the harder ones (cheddar) travel well without refrigeration. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
Jestgar replied to Tripletmomma2000's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since they didn't do a total IgA, you have no way of knowing if the results are even applicable to your boys. Good luck with the scope. -
I have nothing to offer except sympathy. This was my final symptom before going gluten-free and it took a month or so to go away. Allegra kept it at a manageable level, but I found nothing to make it go away. So sorry.

ARCHIVED Moving, Possibly To A Big City...wanting Opinions
Jestgar replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I love Seattle, but it's not high on the 'sun index'. There are lots of small towns around the city that are more affordable and nicer for kids. What do you plan to do with your days? -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Out There Not Support The Use Of Probiotics?
Jestgar replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've started eating home meade yogurt and I've noticed a big difference in recovery time if I've eaten the wrong thing. -

I talked to someone that used to work at Blackbird and she said there is flour everywhere and they don't really pay attention to CC issues. I personally would never eat there (or get coffee). -
As easy as it is to say "it's just food. All you have to do is eat differently" the reality is your whole world has shifted slightly. Not only do you have change what and how you eat, you also have just been told that the one thing you knew you could trust - food - has been letting you down. You have to build a whole new trust base of food. Seeing something...

ARCHIVED Gfcf Birth Control - Advice, Please!
Jestgar replied to kiwi56's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
IUD. You can get a kind that elutes a small amount of hormone so your periods almost disappear. -
The next morning I took a bus back to Zagreb. You kind of stand on the edge of the street and wave down a bus and hope he isn't too full to pick up more passengers. We all chatted while standing around waiting and eventually a bus did show up. Back in Zagreb I discovered it would be 4 hours until a train to Ljubljana so I wandered into Zagreb to look...

ARCHIVED Enterolab--if You Had To Choose A Test, Which One
Jestgar replied to bakinghomesteader's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Then I'd go with Paula's suggestion. The TtG is most likely to give you usable results. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab--if You Had To Choose A Test, Which One
Jestgar replied to bakinghomesteader's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wouldn't do any of them. If you feel better not eating gluten, then just assume that's your problem and spend the money on new pans, or a bread machine for yourself or some other thing that will help you get healthy instead of confirming what you already know. -
ARCHIVED Friends And Family Not Supporting You?
Jestgar replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Next time you eat with them, carry a box of ex-lax. When they offer you gluten, smile and offer them a couple pills "so we can go through this together". -
Well, you haven't been gluten-free very long. Get the endo done right away without returning to gluten. Or, if you do feel better gluten-free, tell her you aren't planning on changing that anyway, and if she thinks there may be other problems she should pursue them anyway.
