  1. It's an autoimmune response, with the emphasis on the 'immune' part. It's like suddenly getting a bad flu.
  2. Usually when you throw in the towel you realize that it wasn't the right choice after all and THEN you have to go find the stupid towel, wash it (because by then it's been trampled all over) and hang it up to use again. Much easier to just hang on to it. Missed you Electra, glad you're back.
  3. Last year, after I went gluten-free, I sent a letter to my PCP describing the changes that had taken place. This year (4 days ago) she said "You've lost weight, your blood pressure's down, tell me what else has improved" She made notes on my chart, approved my excessive amounts of vitamin D and suggested I add zinc. She then told me she's been using me...
  4. I hear you there. For several years after my mom's second operation I dreaded seeing a blinking light on my message machine. It took a while to realize that my mom was going to die, and it would be most likely be sudden, and there wasn't anything I could do about it. Mortality sucks. No way around it.
  5. While your dad's condition sounds more severe, remember that forty or so years ago heart attack was treated with rest only, and many people survived. I once heard that if you survive the attack, you have basically survived and surgical intervention doesn't change the numbers. On the other hand it doesn't tell you when your dad will have the next attack...
  6. Isn't this enough of a diagnosis for you?
  7. OOWWW!!! HEY! Just because you almost forgot doesn't mean you had to do it so hard!! Well, to cheer myself up I'll just watch this: Open Original Shared Link
  8. I know someone posted a question about this a while ago and I don't remember if they got an answer, but I've just heard that zinc deficiency can cause slowed healing that leaves darker, shiny marks on your skin.
  9. Hmmm, some chemical in your environment that you're allergic to? Mold? Your laundry soap? Bath soap?
  10. It might be time for a full-on, naturopath supervised elimination diet. Or if someone here has a designed diet that they're willing to share.
  11. It means you caught the disease before it did so much damage that he wasn't absorbing food.
  12. You don't think the current chief will stay? I thought there were some hints in that direction.
  13. I'm glad you feel well. Welcome to nonymity (what else could be the opposite of anonymity?)
  14. Just the thought sends chills down my spine!
  15. You can just go gluten-free, although everyone has a different opinion on whether or not this is the best first course. You could also make the whole house gluten-free, it would be easier on you and you could judge for yourself if it helps your kids.
  16. It always cheers me up when someone bumps this thread on a Thursday. I have something to look forward to tonight .
  17. How is this different (practically speaking) from Celiac?
  18. After I knowingly went gluten-free, I realized that I had unknowingly cut most gluten out of my diet anyway. Maybe you weren't eating a lot of gluten in the months before the test?
  19. I don't think the fruit is dusted, but the conveyor belts may be. Since it isn't added to the food it isn't required to list it. Buy from a reputable company and it shouldn't be an issue.
  20. If you had full-blown, near-death Celiac, or absolutely unequivocally NO Celiac you still wouldn't know how to warn your daughter. Half of her genetic makeup is from someone else, and you have no way of knowing what that mix has produced. Is it worth the torture of a gluten challenge to prove to the physician that you feel better when you don't eat gluten...
  21. I wish I had known about this stuff years ago. Your friends might be thrilled. Maybe you could just send a link with some innocuous message like "Someone recommended this to me and it's really great"
  22. KIDS WRITE ABOUT THE SEA 1) This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight testicles. (Kelly age 6) 2) Oysters' balls are called pearls. (James age 6) 3) If you are surrounded by sea you are an Island. If you don't have sea all round you, you are incontinent. (Wayne age 7) 4) Sharks are ugly and mean, and have big teeth, just like Emily Richardson...
  23. Murphy's Lesser Known Laws 1. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 2. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. 3. Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't. 4. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. 5. The 50-50-90 rule...
  24. Hi Daniela, I'll be 43 this year. This site is great for both info and support. Welcome!!
  25. I felt this way too, until I was talking to a guy from Ireland about Celiac disease and lymphoma. I mentioned that even though the risks for lymphoma were quite a bit higher in Celiacs, they were so low to start with that it probably wasn't relevant. His response was simply, that may be true, but I personally know of two who have developed lymphoma. Soooo...
