I think many of us have suggested, in your other topics, that gluten may not be the culprit or the only one. I believe you said you were going to consult a doctor? Especially about the shortness of breath - as previously you weren't sure you would live much longer because of it.

nvsmom Community Regular

At three month gluten-free I became quick sick. My hair fell out, my arthralgias were so ad it was hard to use a knife, my C was no better, and my fatigue as ridiculous.... I am not sure if it was gluten related or due to my thyroiditis. Look for other causes and be patient. Hang in there.

Yup that was my plan, until my useless family doctor decided to cancel my appointment and go on vacation for 2 weeks, so now it's either go waste a full day at the clinic for some doctor who will send me home, wait for when I can have another appointment or go seek another family doctor which I am in the process of doing but it takes time.

mommy2krj Explorer

I would find another doctor. Where are you?

With my insurance (and I know not everyone's is the same!) if I go on their website it gives me a list of doctors I can see. Simple matter then of picking up the phone and making an appointment. Now, it does take some time as a good portion of the doctors around here book out quite a ways.....but at least then you have an appointment.

You can start a food journal/symptom journal in the mean time and take it in with you when you go.

Renegade Contributor

I don't have an insurance, in the meantime anything I eat make it feel like my gut is about to explode so now I'm just drinking ginger tea and avoid food as much as I can.

mommy2krj Explorer

Oy. That is no fun. Is there a free clinic or something you could go to?

Maybe the help of a doctor would help determine if it is something more pressing that needs attention now.

For the record, if I were you and I was having these issues....here is what I would do:

I would be drinking the ginger tea (making sure that it is in fact gluten free and probably organic...as high quality as possible)

I would go in to a free clinic or the soonest I could get in to see a doctor. I would have a list of everything that was bothering me and ask lots of annoying questions.

After only drinking the tea for several days (well, the tea and water) I would add in one food that I *think* my body can tolerate. And I would again make sure it is the highest quality I could find. Whether that is rice or a fruit or a veggie...something that my body could handle. I would eat that and continue with the tea and water for several days....possibly a week. If no symptoms, I would add in one more thing.....and keep on going like that. At this point it would probably be fruits and veggies simply because they are nutritious and easy to find and fairly cheap this time of year. Of course....this is provided that your symptoms are lessening while only drinking the tea.

I would research the top foods that give reactions and the family of those foods that can also give reactions just by being related. I would completely avoid those foods at all costs at this point.

I would probably start off with watermelon or with sweet potato (simply because I love watermelon and sweet potatoes are pretty nutritious and still potato like...I'm a big potato fan) and see if those are edible for me without causing issues.

So, I would eat watermelon for a week. Nothing else. Drink lots of water and probably 3 or 4 glasses of the ginger tea each day. Nothing.....I mean NOTHING else. If there are no reactions that week....then on to the next week.

The next week I would add in the sweet potato. So now I have watermelon and sweet potatoes that I can eat. Yay. No symptoms. Only eating fresh watermelon and fresh sweet potatoes. Drinking water and good organic high quality ginger tea. Moving on to the next week....

I would add another single fruit or single veggie. Or, if my symptoms are gone...I'd probably start feeling brave and add one of each so I could have a bigger variety....but it would still be one veggie and then a couple days later one fruit and keep at that for a couple days.

And on and on. If it is food that is doing this to you....it could take quite a while to figure out which one is making you feel like this. Patience is key and with symptoms like you've been describing, insurance or not, you need the help of a doctor.

You can't survive off just ginger tea. If you are having that serious of a level of pain and you are in the US then go to the ER and tell them what is going on or go to the clinic as soon as it opens tomorrow.  If you are unable to eat anything then that is a medical emergency.

I think we all said something like that last week when he? She? Couldn't breathe and thought he wouldn't live thru the weekend.

It got better at some point, then worse then better, bromelain seem to have helped a lot.

How did I dare to ingest food in my body knowing how bad I would feel!!!!

Had 7 peanuts, leaked guts, cramps again. yayyyyy, so hungry yet cant eat s$#&.

Just felt like venting, I'll go see a doctor when I can afford to waste 100$ to get told everything is fine and go home.

Still feels weird to me how I get reaction in my GUT when the food is still in my stomach, now you'll say, but it's probably a reaction from a prior food, well it happens right after I ate.

I think it was suggested that you try something that is easy to digest - like a baked sweet potato or regular potato.  Stomach cramping, etc is very common when you haven't really eaten any food for many days, as you claim.  Maybe try some gluten-free chicken or beef broth?  Then cook some small shreds of carrot or sweet potato in the broth?  Really small so you can sneak it past your stomach.  Maybe just drink a quarter cup, slowly,  every hour for a day.  Then try a bit of banana or apple sauce added to your day.

Maybe cut the ginger tea?  It actually bothers my stomach, maybe it is a problem.  Try to sip on some Gatorade or flat soda like ginger ale.  For some reason the teas bother me but ginger ale always settles my stomach.  It might be the sugar in it.  Sometimes nausea is the body's weird response to low blood sugar.

IrishHeart Veteran

You can't live on ginger tea.  Bromelain and ginger--some people say it soothes their guts. Not mine. Makes mine irritated.

Your gut is cramping possibly because it is looking for nourishment.

Do as Karen suggests (above) and keep the food choices simple. Boiled chicken, plain rice, carrots. Small portions.

Stop taking supplements. if you gut is impaired, they won't be absorbed much anyway.

If you really feel as if you are starving and are going to die, as you say please go to the emergency room. It does not matter whether you have insurance or not. If you are seriously ill, you need medical help. We're not doctors on here and we cannot give medical advice but we do understand what "I am starving to death"  means. It's a plea for help--and we gave it to you last week and we're giving it to you again--or it's an exaggeration.

You have to eat something, hon. Tea isn't food. and it isn't protein. Lack of protein causes cramps in muscles even in the muscles in the gut.

"Protein provides the body with energy. Low protein stores will cause you to feel lethargic, fatigued and weak. You may also experience headaches, nausea, diarrhea, soreness of the stomach and even fainting. Protein helps transport nutrients within the body, delivering and releasing them where they are needed. When protein is not able to perform this function, the body's homeostasis will be thrown off. This may result in a loss of appetite, irritability, insomnia, apathy, and the inability to stay warm."

I said I'll starve to death if I choose to just drink tea, which is not why i did.

I ate this morning 2 egg and blended fruits in almonds milk then 7 peanuts felt like crap then baked potato and some lettuce, feeling ok but still incredibly hungry, gut is making a ton of noise, but again it always is unless i stop eating for a whole 8  hours.

Also had diarrhea this morning and it was all undigested food.

I had beef meat twice on Friday and it's when i started to get very bad cramps, and then i had it again the next day, bad cramp then one more the day after because i didn't want it to rot and bad cramps again.

I guess i cant tolerate, meat too.

i

Only things that seems to do me OKAY are eggs and fruits, anything else gives me a reaction. But why this makes no sense to me is I digested meat fine the first time, no more, same for nuts.

Hyperthyroidism can cause severe shortness of breath as well as bouts of diarrhea. Is your thyroid doing ok?

Probably not, very soon I'll get all of this checked when time and money allow me, in the meantime I just gotta suffer the pain till I can find a doctor.

no more then 3 weeks to go hopefully.

"7 peanuts felt like crap"

But you said in your original post your allergic/intolerant to peanut butter correct? So probably shouldn't eat peanuts

Good point, but we've all told him this on several threads. He really needs to see a doctor ASAP

You are in Canada. You have public health insurance. You do not have to pay to see a doctor. You need to come up with some reason other than that false excuse.

kareng Grand Master

Now it looks like he has eaten more than just a few peanuts.  Its hard to get the real picture of what is going on here.  Said he wasn't eating anything but tea, said he couldn't breathe at all...

Not sure there is much any of us can do for you right now.

Didn't you say you live in Canada?  There might be a long wait but they don't charge for medical care.  If you are really as bad as you say, you can certainly go to the emergency room and be seen and treated for the emergent issues like inability to breathe or not eating in weeks.

Renegade Contributor

You are in Canada. You have public health insurance. You do not have to pay to see a doctor. You need to come up with some reason other than that false excuse.

You get appointments for doctors , appointments are during the week,I work during the week and dont get paid if i take a day off.

I had an appointment ,my doctor canceled my appointment and took off for 2 weeks, I could go to the clinic on the weekend which is what I'll do at this point I guess, I wanted to get a new doctor as the family doctor I have is bad and I heard you can get one from CLSC, someone that will follow up with me, but guess I'll waste an entire Saturday and have a doctor who has no background about me, who doesn't care and who will also NOT follow with me in case of anything. Just repeating the story and not be heard and waste my time.

The fact I am shortness of breathe DOESN'T prevent me from inhaling air but it sure make me feel like something is going wrong, the fact I get bloated and feel huge cramps when I eat DOESN'T prevent me from putting food in my mouth, i never said i didn't eat for weeks, that is what someone else suggested, please don't think that because someone suggested to not eat for weeks that this is what I did. Also considering this wasn't even a week since i posted this thread.

I did eat 7 peanuts, and did mention all I had today, no i didn't binge on a whole pack.

"7 peanuts felt like crap"

But you said in your original post your allergic/intolerant to peanut butter correct? So probably shouldn't eat peanuts

I was doing fine eating almonds and I was doing fine with peanuts as well, until now. People suggested the peanut butter could be from the oil or something else.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.
    • trents
Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
    • trents
Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!
