Glutened, And No One To Blame But Myself :)

i am generally very good about watching out for gluten, but every now and then i get side-tracked and can't seem to talk and focus on gluten at the same time.  

 

last week, i was on vacation with my boyfriend.  he had gone up to the bar to get drinks (beer for him, and hard cider for me).  when i joined him, he was in a discussion with the bartender trying to assess if the hard cider on tap would be safe for me.  i have been gluten-free for over 1.5 years now, and am getting better at wording questions that wait-staff can answer, so i asked if the tap was dedicated to cider.  it was.  I was so excited, i grabbed my cider and took a small sip - it was delicious!  as i was swallowing (and my boyfriend called me name), i realized the thing that made it taste so good was that it was a nice hoppy IPA, and not a cider at all.  OH NO!!  

 

fortunately, i only had an unhappy tummy for a day - it could have been so much worse.  

 

another lesson learned - no more draft cider for me if there is a chance i might get distracted :)

I did a similar thing last night! I was having a few ciders and went to the fridge for another one, I didn't know it but someone had put a bud lite in the cider 6pack holder. I didn't even look at the bottle (I was talking) I just popped the top and took a big swig! doh! I do feel pretty bad today, nauseous, tired, stomach cramps-not a good way to START my vacation! LOL

Me too.  In fact this is how I got my last glutening.  I was out on our pontoon with DH and grabbed a bottle out of the cupholder, thinking it was my Angry Orchard when it was hubby's Abita.  Luckily I realized after 1 sip but the damage was already done.

I imagine the 6th ring of hell being, just that, sipping an ice cold beer and simultaneously  savoring the goodness and then the panic sets in.

I'm sorry to hear that others have suffered, but it is comforting to know that I have company :)

 

I was kind of hoping that I would no longer like the taste of a good IPA, but no such luck.

I'm always afraid of something like this happening. My man is a big beer connoisseur (read: snob), so I do lots of beer smelling (there's this amazing raspberry beer that's sheer torture), but am extremely careful not to touch the stuff (and no post-beer kisses either).

I've had some close calls though: distractedly trying to get caps off regular beer bottles thinking it was my gluten-free, nearly taking a sip of a beer I was just supposed to take a sniff of (It seriously looked like juice! He said "here, try some" and I tentatively took it until he grabbed it back at the last minute. Ack!)

I also rarely get draft cider anymore because of CC fears. And also because I'm getting sick of cider.

 

Hope you recover quickly. It's amazing what a sip will do to us!

Guys, Kareng tells me she has a bright, colorful beer cozy thinger she puts on her  G F beer so she does not sip her hub's beer by mistake.

 

(hmm...not sure what to do about the glasses in a pub, except maybe never, ever put it down?)

 

Maybe you guys can get some of those cozies (I see it is also spelled koozies)

I have had this happen to me. Now, my beer is always in a cover like this. Open Original Shared Link

Or the foam kinds. My hub doesn't use one unless he is outside. Even if my hub brings me my beer in the cover or sets it in the cover, I double check what is in the coozie before I drink. One time he put his beer in my koozie by accident.

We went to the lake a couple of weeks ago. I didn't bring a koozie. My hub started drinking my beer! Fortunately, we had plenty so I poured that one out.

At bars, the gluten-free beer is usually in a bottle, so I just leave mine in the bottle. So uncouth!

at home, or in my normal surroundings, i am very diligent.  however, put me in a situation where i am distracted and chatting away and all bets are off :)

 

my boyfriend already declared that he will not be buying my cider on tap.  i think he felt pretty badly, even though it was my own doing.

Kiddo...this could very well happen to any of us. I have been known to become distracted by something like the cat or some good lookin cabana boy walks by and forget I am in the mid..........

Really I know your feeling. Been going to a restaurant with a friend of mine for about 6 months in AnnArbor , I didn't even know I was Celiac at 1st. Then I found out what my problem was and we continued to go every time she had to go to U of M. I even got their Gluten free Menu :) So proud of myself for being so good!! I was getting twice baked potatoes :) Yumm I seemed to still have issues , but figured it was they were cross contaminated , pffttt Went yesterday looked at that darn Menu and their twice baked potatoes were not on it!! Same menu I have been using since I have been gluten free. I think I just wanted to see those? Here they deep fry the things. ughhh well learn something new every day!!

Those aren't as safe as a plain baked potato.  They scoop the insides out and add who knows what and put them back in the potato.  In theory they should be safe, but if they aren't on the gluten-free menu, they might put something odd in them.

If they fry them, and they probably do, that would be why they aren't on the gluten-free menu.

 

 

Are these the "baked potatoes" you were blaming Outback or some other place for glutening you with on another thread?

No that wasn't me , I have not been to outback in years! This was at Chili's , When I was Glutened at another restaurant I didn't mention the name because it is not a chain restaurant. 

The potato skins I ate the last time I was @ chili's ,I would of sworn were on their menu. But this time I specifically looked for them and they were not there. I could of sworn I seen them on their menu. But they were not. No wonder I had to stop 3 times on the way home! Also thier corn chips are not Gluten free! I made that mistake thinking "Corn chips" They have to be Gluten free... But deep fried .. pffttt I am still learning .....

I am old. :lol:  I call people I like "Kiddo". My Dad called me Kiddo and his brothers and friends called him Kid.

just "stuck". I was a teacher for 22 years.... had lots of kiddos..... you get the picture.

 

yes, we all laugh at ourselves. Makes making mistakes more enjoyable that way.

....and with celiac/NCGI, you always have pals.... and you are never alone.

      Hi all,  Looking for some advice. I started having some symptoms this past summer like night sweats and waking at 4 am and felt quite achy in my joints. I was training heavily for cycling for a few weeks prior to the onset of these symptoms starting. I have had low Ferratin for about 4 years (started at 6) and usually sits around 24 give or take. I was doing some research and questioned either or not I might have celiac disease (since I didn’t have any gastric symptoms really). My family doctor ran blood screening for celiac. And my results came back: Tissue Transglutaminase Ab IgA HI 66.6 U/mL Immunoglobulin IgA 1.73 g/ My doctor then diagnosed me with celiac and I have now been gluten free for 3 months. In this time I no longer get night sweats my joint pain is gone and I’m still having trouble sleeping but could very much be from anxiety. I was since referred to an endoscopy clinic to get a colonoscopy and they said I should be getting a biopsy done to confirm celiac. In this case I have to return to eating gluten for 4-6 weeks before the procedure. Just wanted some advice on this. I seem to be getting different answers from my family physician and from the GI doctor for a diagnosis.    Thanks,

      Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

      I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

      Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.
