Weirdly (And Dangerously) I Keep Forgetting....

It's strange - I guess I'm getting so used to being gluten free now (dx with Celiac in February) that a couple of times in the last few days, I've forgotten and almost eaten something I shouldn't.

Never thought this would get so routine that it wasn't top of mind, but the other day my son didn't finish his sandwich and instead of wasting it, I said I'd finish it.

He stared at me, and I said "what?".

"Mom!  The bread."

I guess, in a weird way, this is a good sign, but I'm worried I'll eat something I shouldn't.  I posted the other day about forgetting and taking a piece of gum from a friend without checking it first.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I can understand, after struggling for so long, being able to finally let your guard down, but then doing it too much.  It is hard to find a balance between oops that had gluten and total gluten nazi. :)  The one time I almost messed up, I was at a dinner at a place that I could eat gluten-free, with my crazy old aunt.  She was insisting I put the leftover rolls in my doggy bag so they wouldn't go to waste, so I habitually did what she said and then I was like, "Oh crap I can't eat that now," so I gave the leftovers to my husband.  I have also gone somewhere that I could eat gluten-free and my husband was not, and reached over to sneak a taste of something on his plate when he was like "Uhhhhhhh" and stopped me.  I am very glad he has my back. :) So I would say training your family and friends to look out for you as well, is a really good idea.  Definitely reward your son for having your back!

NIkki,

Scary eh?  This has happened to me twice and freaked me out.  Same scenario as you, once with my son and once with my Hubs.  The two times were relatively close together.  Like you, my son and Hubs looked at me and said "What?"

Has not happened to me since and I hope never again.  In the beginning of going gluten free I would catch myself all the time almost putting a noodle in my mouth to check for doneness. (My hubs and son are not gluten-free) That stopped after a few months but then the two biggies.  I do recall I was under additional stress and I think that may have contributed to my brain not kicking in at those moments.

All the best,

Colleen

I think that has happened to everyone.

Colleen, we used to do the 2 different pastas.  I would make my son "tend" the gluten pasta.  Then it just go to be too big of a hassle trying to keep the spoons separate, etc.  Now we just all eat the same pasta and no one minds.

Karen,

It got to be too much for me too.  All I make is gluten-free pasta now.  Son still makes his mac n cheese.  Hubs still makes his gluteny stuff but now I stay out of the kitchen if they are in there.  They came to realize that if I'm cooking it will be gluten free and they will like it.  Hehe.

My guys don't care if its gluten-free as long as Mom buys it and fixes it.  One of their friends ate pasta with us a couple of times - simple jarred salsa & cheese baked on top.  He wanted to know how I made it so really good.

What they don't know won't hurt them.  (evil grin)

I don't know how many times my youngest (now 10 and 9) have rescued me when my mind was absent!  It sure is hard to work on food that isn't safe for you.  I am mostly thinking of my rotational diet, but the same would apply to gluten.

I read the label when I buy and before I open the package because I got myself last winter. Blah.

It's my husband who keeps slipping up. I think it's because I handle all the food - shopping, cooking, cleaning. He was better at first when it was all new, now he forgets.  Just a couple of weeks ago he was going to let my 10 year old try to get a swallow out of the bottom of his beer bottle. Picture a mom lurching over the counter saying "Noooo!".... Picture it in slow motion.... take 20 lbs off me while you're at it.  ;)

lolz - nicole, too funny!  i'm glad it's only 'me' i have to worry about......  and even then!  i did that last thanksgiving, putting away leftovers and licking the (gluten-free but glutened with wheat crackers for the wheateaters) ladle for the crab dip.  just as i was in mid-lick, my daughter is yelling MOM!  NO!  i'm like o sh!t..........

well, at least i knew what hit me - i think it sucks worse when it's a mystery  <_<

Glad to know I'm not the only one.  I have to say, my kids are perfectly happy with my gluten-free pasta, so that's a help.  One meal for all.

I think, after reading this, that you areso traumatized by not being able yo understand what your medical advisors have been  what medical conditions are that you would like to find a group of people who also feel traumatized who would agree with you and also support you. You are on a crusade much as the way the US Cabinet  official, the Health Director of our nation is in trying to change what he considers outdated and incorrect health advisories. He does not have the education, background or experience to be in the position he occupies and is not making beneficial decisions. That man suffered a terrible trauma early in his life when his father was assonated. We see now how he developed and worked himself into a powerful position.  Unless you are willing to take some advice or  are willing to use a few of the known methods of starting on a path to better health then not many of us on this Celiac Forum will be able to join you in a continuing series of complaints about medical advisors.    I am almost 90 years old. I am strictly gluten free. I use 2 herbs to help me stay as clear minded as possible. You are not wrong in complaining about medical practitioners. You might be more effective with a clearer mind, less anger and a more comfortable life if you would just try some of the suggestions offered by our fellow celiac volunteers.

Thus has got to STOP , medical bit believing us! I literally went through 31 years thinking it was just a food allergy as its downplayed by medical if THEY weren't the ones who diagnosed us! Im positive for HLA-DQ2 which is first celiac patient per Iran and Turkey. Here in the States especially in Cali its why do you feel that way? Why do you think your celiac? Your not eating gluten so its something else.Medical caused me depression. I thought I was safe with my former pcp for 25 years considering i thought everything I went through and going through will be available when I get fired again for health. Health not write-ups my health always come back when you're better.Im not and being tossed away at no fault to my own other than shitty genes.I was denied disability because person said he didn't know how to classify me! I said Im celiac, i have ibs, hernia, sciatica, high blood pressure, in constant pain have skin and eye issues and menopause intensified everything. With that my celiac nightmare began to reprove my disregarded disease to a bunch of clowns who think they are my careteam when they said I didn't have...I feel Im still breathing so I can fight this so no body else has to deal with this nightmare. Starting over with " new care team" and waisting more time on why I think I am when diagnosed in 1994 before food eliminated from my diet. P.s everything i went through I did write to medical board, so pretty sure I will continue to have a hard time.

@Scatterbrain, Thiamine Vitamin B1 and amino acid Taurine work together.  Our bodies can make Taurine from meats consumed.  Our bodies cannot make Thiamine and must consume thiamine from food.  Meat is the best source of B vitamins like Thiamine.   Vegetarians may not make sufficient taurine since they don't eat meat sources of taurine.  Seaweed is the best vegetarian source of taurine. Vegetarians may not consume sufficient Thiamine since few veggies are good sources.  Whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds contain thiamine.  Many of these sources can be hard to digest and absorb for people with Celiac disease.   You may find taking the forms of thiamine called Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and a B Complex will give the benefits you're looking for better than taurine alone.

@Jmartes71, I went to Doterra's site and had a look around.  The Doterra TerraZyme supplement really jumped out at me.  Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients.  The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus!  Other enzymes are made by yeast Saccharomyces!  Considering the fact that Celiac often have permeable intestines (leaky gut syndrome), I would be very hesitant to take a product like this.  Although there may not be live black mold or yeast in the product, the enzymes may still cause an immune system response which would definitely cause inflammation throughout the body.   Skin, eyes, and intestines are all made from the same basic type of cells.  Your skin on the outside and eyes can reflect how irritated the intestines are on the inside.  Our skin, eyes, and intestines all need the same vitamins and nutrients to be healthy:  Vitamin A, Niacin B3 and Tryptophan, Riboflavin B2, Biotin B7, Vitamin C, and Omega Threes.  Remember that the eight B vitamins work together.  Just taking high doses of just one, vitamin like B12, can cause a deficiency in the others.  Taking high doses of B12 can mask a Folate B9 deficiency.  If you take B12, please take a B Complex, too.  Thiamine B1 can be taken in high doses safely without toxicity.  Thiamine is needed by itself to produce energy so every cell in the body can function, but Thiamine also works with the other B vitamins to make life sustaining enzymes and digestive enzymes.  Deficiencies in either Niacin, Vitamin C, or Thiamine can cause digestive problems resulting in Pellagra, Scurvy, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi.   If you change your diet, you will change your intestinal microbiome.  Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet, will starve out SIBO bacteria.  Thiamine keeps bacteria in check so they don't get out of control as in SIBO.  Thiamine also keeps MOLDS and Yeasts from overgrowth.   Menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities are symptomatic of low Vitamin D.   Doctors are not as knowledgeable about malnutrition as we need them to be.  A nutritionist or dietician would be more helpful.   Take control of your diet and nutrition.  Quit looking for a pill that's going to make you feel better overnight.  The Celiac journey is a marathon, not a sprint.   "Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food."

The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.
