Could It Be Gluten Intolerance

Hello everyone,

 

I am just starting my research on gluten intolerance after a few months.

 

Quick intro - my 7 year old son has been having stomach aches for months. This is all new to me, so at first I thought it would just go away. Lately he has been avoiding activity, crying because of the stomach pain, complaining of headaches. We have been to his regular doctor and just last week the GI doctor. They gave him Prilosec. He has also been going to a therapist for of course, possible anxiety.

 

Well he was just sent home again today by the school nurse because "he looks like death". Is gluten intolerance something we should be considering?

 

Thanks for any input. I will take the time to do more reading when I can!

It could very well be celiac disease as there are over 300 symptoms.  Has your doctor (ped or GI) ordered a celiac panel?  If not, I'd ask.  My main symptom for celiac disease was anemia -- no tummy issues.  Later, I realized (and my family) that my "anxiety" was definitely related to celiac disease and not menopause!   :lol:

 

Check out the University of Chicago's Celiac Website on screening and other facts.  You can always print it off and hand it over to your doctor.  Review the list of symptoms too on the U of C's website.

It sounds very much like our 8-year-old. Our family doctor didn't do anything about his ongoing tummy aches and certainly didn't consider intolerances. Then the naturopath tested him for delayed food allergies. We need to avoid gluten (mainly all grains for now), eggs and nuts and things are slowly improving.

      I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

      If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.

      What was the reference range for that test? Each lab uses different reference ranges so a raw score like that makes it difficult to comment on. But it looks like a rather large number.

      I have had the tTG-IgA blood test my result are >250.0  I am waiting for the appointment with the gastroenterologist for endoscopy and biopsies.    what are the chances it’s not coeliacs.  waiting and not knowing is so hard. Especially the eating of gluten knowing it may be causing you more harm and coping with the symptoms.
