Dao Enzyme Testing

Went to my Allergist/Immunologist appointment about my overactive histamine levels today. He knew nothing about Histamine Intolerance Testing, or DAO enzyme testing. He thinks my increased food sensitivities are from my leaky gut - he knew what that was! I couldn't get anything more definitive out of him and I had to pry information out of him as he kept trying to walk away - love that in a doctor.

He was aware of MCAS. We discussed that and Celiac disease. He didn't think I showed signs of either. It's true the symptoms for MCAS don't match mine, and my blood tests for celiac were negative. He told me blood tests were all that were needed to dx Celiac, and that it didn't matter whether I had stopped eating gluten beforehand. He said a biopsy isn't the preferred test for Celiac at this point. That didn't sound right to me. Hmmmm…

I will have to go elsewhere for DAO enzyme testing, not sure if that should be a GI or Naturopath? Can anyone help with that question? I could try DAO enzymes to see if it helps, but I would like to be tested to know if I'm low first. I think it's important to find that out.

Sorry...DAO testing is not available in the US to the best of my knowledge.  My primary ordered and calls ping-ponged back and forth between UCSD and Mayo for three hours while I waited for the drama to finish.

My info is about a year and half old....but as far as I knew we had to send our results to Oz or Europe.  Believe it.

I thought I saw something written by IrishHeart that she had the test and is taking the enzymes, which by the way are not easy to find so far. Couldn't find the thread and would love to know anything about about this. I don't think my Allergist had ever heard of it.

Where's the mighty warrior princess IH???

I never said I had "testing for DAO enzymes" because there are no tests available in this country. I said Jebby (aka Jess) had testing for MCAS.

You would have to read her blog to see what is involved in those tests.

THE BEST way to know if you have a true histamine intolerance is to go on a low histamine diet for 4 weeks. If your symptoms improve, that's your answer. My GI doc said 6 months or longer to understand my histamine tolerance level. I know what it is now. I never found that taking DAO enzymes helped much anyway. Save your cash, IMHO.

For the record, what I actually said was:

"I am fortunate that my GI doctor was knowledgeable enough about histamine intolerance and why our guts may be lacking the enzyme DAO and he was very encouraging in that it can resolve in time"

So sorry IrishHeart if I misquoted you. I think that must be my brain fog. Seems I have trouble remembering things correctly sometimes. I'll be more careful about that in the future.

Thanks so much for your response! Glad to know about DAO testing and supplements, I won't waste energy thinking about that anymore. It's good to know your GI was encouraging that if our guts are lacking the enzyme DAO, it can resolve in time.

You sharing your knowledge and experience here is so greatly appreciated, I can't thank you enough!!!

So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure!

Some people prefer eating gluten before bed, then sleeping through the worst symptoms at night.  You might want to try that and see if that makes any difference.   Several slices of toast for breakfast sounds okay.  Just try to work up to the Ten grams of gluten.  Cookies might only have a half of a gram of gluten.  The weight of the whole cookie is not the same as the amount of gluten in it.  So do try to eat bread things with big bubbles, like cinnamon rolls.   Yeah, I'm familiar with the "death warmed over" feeling.  I hope you get the genetic test results quickly.  I despise how we have to make ourselves sick to get a diagnosis.  Hang in there, sweetie, the tribe is supporting you.

Thank you, a little expensive but glad to have this source.

@knitty kitty  Thank you very much for the advice. I did the exam this morning, my doctor actually suggested me to take something called "Celiac duo test" in which I first do the genetic test and if it's positive, then I'll have to do the antigen blood test. I have to attend 1 month until my results are ready, so I have some weeks to increase the amount of gluten I eat daily. It will be hard because my health is not the best right now, but I also did a blood test to cheek my nutritional deficiencies. The results will arrive on Tuesday, so I can ask my doctor what should I do to control my symptoms and blood levels during this month. For now I'm resting and paying attention to what I eat— at least I don’t look like a vampire who just woke up, like I did yesterday. I'm still scared because is the first time I've felt this sick, but this is the right moment to turn things around for the better.  I realized that if I eat gluten at lunch I cannot finish the day properly, I become severely tired and sometimes my stomach hurts a lot - let's not talk about the bloating that starts later. Do you think is it ok to eat gluten just in the morning, like some cookies and slices of bread for breakfast?

I suffer from Dermatitis Herpetiformis, too.  Like @Rogol72, I had to cut out all gluten-free processed foods, dairy, oats, and eggs before my skin cleared up.  I followed the Autoimmune Protocol Diet. I also supplement with the eight essential B vitamins.  (Meat and liver are great sources of B vitamins.)  Low levels of certain B vitamins ( B12, Thiamine, Pyridoxine, and Niacin) can affect the nerves, resulting in itching and tingling.  Niacin especially helps with the itching and healing the blisters.  Tallow Balm helps with the healing, too.  Zinc and Vitamin A also help with skin health.   I've gotten such good results with Niacin and the other vitamins mentioned that I've never had to go on Dapsone.
