Updated Information On Washington Dc Restaurants?

Yes I searched but the information is 4+ years old. :D.

 

Heading to Washington DC next month and looking for Gluten Free suggestions in and around the DC area.  It's  a short trip, so will probably be focusing our time around the Smithsonian's, Natural History Museum for sure!!  I think we would like to take in the Newseum and spend time in the Library of Congress building since these are the 3 things we did not have much time for (or at all) on our last trip.  Grab and go or food court food is fine.  

 

We will be staying in Alexandria so anything in Old Towne for an evening meal would be great too.

A friend of mine reccomended this website when I was diagnosed with Celiac: Open Original Shared Link

 

Its been fairly helpful, though I would reccomend using it in conjuction with the Find Me Gluten Free app so that you can read other celiac/gluten intolerent reviews of the restaurants. If your not familiar with the app, you can download it free on any smartphone and use your GPS location to find gluten free restaurants near you, there are typically reviews and ratings for how well or poor the place actually handles orders and cc issues. It's been a life saver for me.

We skirted DC both times, but I did eat in a Bonefish Grill in MD and VA---both very good. And SAFE! ;)

 

RE: Find Me Gluten Free? Don't rely on the reviews unless someone says "I have celiac".

 

Just because there's  a gluten-free menu, doesn't make it safe and some folks are not worried about CC.

 

I am. I always say "it was good and I did not get sick"....when I review.

Unless it sucks, in which case I say that too.

 

Trust me on this one--not all G F menus are to be trusted. Choose wisely.

Are you sure the Natural History Museum is open?  I know the castle building is closed for a while, but it seems like I saw something about work being done on the natural history building too.  Best check on that.

 

This Yahoo group is restricted but they would be the best source of restaurant info.  They have an online database of reviews.

There are quite a few places around the area that serve gluten-free food now.  I don't eat out much myself though so can't give recommendations on them.  Although I did eat at Chupacabra on H Street NE a while back and got only mildly sick.  Which wasn't gluten but probably one of my many other food intolerances.   I'd eat there again, and have in fact done so.

 

I doubt you'll hit H Street NE while visiting though unless you want to ride the new streetcar.  Which may be running by then.  They are still doing training runs at the moment.

 

I am pretty sure some of the museum eateries have at least salads available.  Seems I ate a salad at the Natural History museum eatery a few months back.  Yeah that was it, I remember cause there were fossilized plants in the salad and I thot that was odd.  Kidding! :)

I don't see anything on the website about either museum being closed, the Castle or Natural History.  I can deal with salads if I have to :D

No food in DC is cheep :D.  We did see the dino hall last time through DC, just didn't see much of anything else at the Natural History museum---our other traveling companions didn't care to spend more time there...

 

I'm really looking forward to this trip--short as it is.  I'm going with our oldest son, who is out of the nest and lives 5 hours away so we don't see him as much as we would like!  We are both history buffs so DC is like Disneyworld for us :D.

They make the BEST Nutella strudel (and Nutella/banana) -- flaky crust like I rarely see in gluten-free stuff. omg. Although they make a good chocolate cake also, I always request the strudels for my birthday now. My dh buys a box and we stick candles in each one. lol. -- The lemon tartlets are really good too. Well, everything I've tried has been good. But the strudel and the lemon tartlet are my favorites.

      I forgot to mention my suspicion of the high amount of glyphosate allowed to be used on wheat in USA and NZ and Australia. My weight was 69kg mid-2023, I went down to 60kg in March 2024 and now hover around 63kg (just after winter here in NZ) - wheat-free and very low alcohol consumption.

      Hi Jess Thanks so much for your response and apologies for the long delay in answering. I think I must have been waiting for something to happen before I replied and unfortunately it fell off the radar... I have had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy in the meantime (which revealed 'minor' issues only). Yes I do think histamine intolerance is one of the problems. I have been lowering my histamine intake and feeling a lot better. And I do think it is the liver which is giving the pain. I am currently taking zinc (I have had three low zinc tests now), magnesium, B complex, vitamin E and a calcium/Vitamin C mix. I consciously think about getting vitamin D outside. (Maybe I should have my vitamin D re-tested now...) I am still 100% gluten-free. My current thoughts on the cause of the problems is some, if not all, of the following: Genetically low zinc uptake, lack of vitamin D, wine drinking (alcohol/sulphites), covid, immune depletion, gastroparesis, dysbiosis, leaky gut, inability to process certain foods I am so much better than late 2023 so feel very positive 🙂

      Hi and thank you very much for your detailed response! I am so glad that the protocol worked so well for you and helped you to get your health back on track. I've heard of it helping other people too. One question I have is how did you maintain your weight on this diet? I really rely on nuts and rice to keep me at a steady weight because I tend to lose weight quickly and am having a hard time envisioning how to make it work, especially when not being able to eat things like nuts and avocados. In case you have any input, woud be great to hear it! Friendly greetings.

      I was not taking any medications previous to this. I was a healthy 49 yo with some mild stomach discomfort. I noticed the onset of tinnitus earlier this year and I had Covid at the end of June. My first ‘flare-up’ with these symptoms was in August and I was eating gluten like normal. I had another flare-up in September and then got an upper endo at the end of September that showed possible celiac. My blood test came a week later. While I didn’t stop eating gluten before I had the blood test, I had cut back on food and gluten both. I had a flare-up with this symptoms after one week of gluten free but wasn’t being crazy careful. Then I had another flare-up this week. I think it might have been caused by Trader Joe’s baked tofu which I didn’t realize had wheat. But I don’t know if these flare-ups are caused by gluten or if there’s something else going on. I am food journaling and tracking all symptoms. I have lost 7 pounds in the last 10 days.

      Welcome to the forum, @Hmart! There are other medical conditions besides celiac disease that can cause villous atrophy as well as some medications and for some people, the dairy protein casein. So, your question is a valid one. Especially in view of the fact that your antibody testing was negative, though there are also some seronegative celiacs. So, do you get reactions every time you consume gluten? If you were to purposely consume a slice of bread would you be certain to develop the symptoms you describe?
