Hunger has returned after three months gluten free

I have always been overweight, although I am not a big eater. I thought I had a slow metabolism or hypothyroid, although it checked out OK. After three months of going gluten free (non celiac gluten sensitivity), suddenly I  have the appetite of my teenage son! I Also, my normal intolerance to cold is disappearing, and I am getting occasional hot flashes! Kind of like him-he never wears a coat!  I am worried about gaining more weight so I have to keep  the calories  in check and watch what I eat. Is there a recognised medical reason for this? I dont think I was ever undernourished. Is it possible my metabolism, thanks to my thyroid and other organs healing, is returning to normal?

My appetite became pretty big after a couple of months too. I'm afraid I'm not sure why. I enjoyed it as much as I could though.  ;)

I'm only a week in on gluten free. I was diagnosed with celiacs disease a week ago. I'm finding it's pretty serious, too. I'm a bigger woman but since I've went gluten-free I don't crave anything or get hungry and when I do eat, I get full quick. I'm confused but enjoying the lessened calories! I also found out I have sluggish thyroid. I'm about 4 days in on the meds for that.

Please read our "Newbie 101" thread pinned at the top of the "Coping" section of the forum.  It contains lots of great tips on avoiding gluten and places where it could hide.  Cross contamination (like sharing a toaster) are big issues for us.  

The good news is that your health is going to improve!  

Be sure to have your thyroid checked every six weeks to see how the medication is being absorbed.  It takes that long for the body to adjust thyroid medication (replacement).  Your thyroid could even improve on the gluten free diet.  Let's hope!

      Hello, just popped in my head to ask this question about medications and celiac? I have always had refurse reaction to meds since I can remember  of what little meds my body is able to tolerate. I was taking gabapentin 300mg for a week,  in past I believe 150? Any ways it amps me up not able to sleep, though very tired.However I did notice it helped with my bloating sibo belly.I hate that my body is that sensitive and medical doesn't seem to take seriously. Im STILL healing with my skin, eye, and now ms or meningioma ( will know in April  which)and dealing with this limbo nightmare. I did write my name, address ect on the reclamation but im not tech savvy and not sure if went through properly. I called my city representative in Stanislaus County and asked if theres a physical paper i can sign for proclamation for celiac and she had no clue about what I was saying, so I just said I'll go back on website.

      I'm not saying that some celiacs won't need it, but it should be done under a doctor's supervision because it can cause lots of problems in some people.

      I also noticed I get debilitating migraines when I smell gluten, wheat and its not taken seriously when it affects one in every way.Im still begging to properly be heard.I also noticed tolerance level is down the drain with age and life changes. I have been told by incompetent medical that im not celiac or that sensitive. Diagnosed in 1994 by gi biopsy gluten-free ever since along with other lovely food allergies. Prayers

      trents:  Why some can tolerate european bread but not american bread.     I take 600 mcg a day.  Right in the middle of the safe range.   Groups at Risk of Iodine Inadequacy Though though the NIH does not specifically list Celiac Disease in this group, they state: "Iodide is quickly and almost completely absorbed in the stomach and duodenum. Iodate is reduced in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed as iodide [2,5]."  That would certainly include malabsorption of Iodine due to Celiac Disease with resultant Iodine Deficiency.
