Spices (McCormicks)

Hey everyone!

This topic has come up before on the forum, but I wanted to start a new discussion in hopes that it might be more up-to-date.

What brand of spices do you all use? I am referring to single ingredient spices, i.e. cumin, garlic powder, cinnamon, etc. I have silent Celiacs so unfortunately I cannot tell if the McCormick's spices I am using are glutening me.

Thanks in advance!

I use the McCormick brand spices, and am not aware of them causing me any problems. I only use the "single" spices, but that is mostly because I prefer the versatility of making my own mixes.

I live in Canada and Club House (made by McCormick) has many mixes that carry the Canadian Celiac Assoc seal. I don't use them, but don't have any reason to believe they aren't fine. I think some of the concern comes from Nima sensor users, where the device cannot reliably evaluate foods that are brightly coloured (ie. some spices).

Realistically, even if a spice or seasoning is close to 20 ppm gluten, it is not the same level of concern as other products. 20 ppm is a concentration, but it is the absolute amount of gluten that hurts you (concentration x weight). If you eat a small amount of something at 20 ppm (say a teaspoon of spice) it is very different from eating a bag of chips or two pieces of bread at 20 ppm.

I use Spicely Organics and The Spice house for singles and some blends as a chef. I also use Big Axe Spices for some blends and when selling foods at markets and planned for my food truck.

I use McCormicks and have no issues with them.

I also use McCormicks for single ingredient and Wegmans brand for mixed as long as the container has the circleG. They make a great garlic and herb mixed that I use almost daily.

I use Spicely. ALL their spices, even the combos, are certified gluten-free. You can find them at some Whole Foods, Lassen's, and other markets, BUT you can buy them on line directly from them at spicely.com.  I've found their products to be very fresh and very flavorful.

Welcome to the forum, @BlakeAlex! Is this the GI Reset product you are using?: https://inwellbio.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/GI-Reset_Info-Sheet.pdf There is a lot of weird stuff in that you could be reacting to. Personally, I would discontinue it as I doubt it's really doing you any good anyway. Getting to the point where you are truly eating gluten free consistently usually involves a significant learning curve as gluten is hidden in the food supply in many ways by manufacturers. For instance, would you ever expect to find it in soy sauce or Campbell's tomato soup? But it's there and a main ingredient. Getting rid of macro sources of gluten is relatively easy. Just cut...

Hello, I was recently diagnose with Celiac Disease and without realizing, I had every symptom on the list. Now I am moving as fast as I can to a total recovery. I thought I was doing well but I notice my ulcers on my tongue and throat and cough are starting to come back again.  Has anyone experience these symptoms? Also, I am incorporating GI Reset powder for a jump start to recovery.  Thanks in advance, Blake

No. There is no damage done to the gut lining with NCGS.

Hi Trents, Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I do have concerns about NCGS. Would this show up if I did the endoscopy testing?

@MagsM, It concerns me that your physicians seem to be preoccupied with the concept of "classic celiac disease".  That suggests to me their knowledge of celiac disease may be dated and they don't have a concept yet for the "silent celiac" who doesn't manifest with classic GI symptoms.
