How Long Does It Last?

I have only been gluten free for about 6 weeks now, and this is all still very new to me. I've been reading all the posts regularly but this is my first posting.

I must admit that I've been a little sceptic (or maybe denial!) about all this since my biopsy was normal.

On saturday, I had a grilled cheese sandwich, because it was offered to me, there was nothing else for lunch where I was, and, quite honestly, I had been feeling better and thought I could.

But I cant. I know that now! No more sceptism...it's official!!!

I had sever cramps and pain, and then, in the evening, really watery diahrea (sorry!!!)

My question is, how long does "being glutened" last? I don't hurt anymore, but still feel queasy and nauseous, especially after eating. I had to really force down my lunch this morning. My bowel movements are also still pretty soft.

It's now Tuesday...could this really last 4 days?

I took the wheat challenge intentionally two weeks ago just to see what would happen. Never again. My stomach was torn up and I was so sleepy for about 4 days. good luck marcia

Sorry to hear that you glutened yourself -- I have been sick up to a week in the past from unintentional gluten! Like most things it totally depends on the person - everyone's body is different! Plain white rice sometimes settles the stomach - good luck!

It takes me about 24 hours to react and two days later to feel better

I've been toying with the idea of glutening myself just to see what happens. I've had some "sickness" and I wasn't sure if it was a glutening (or caseining) or just something else. I guess I'd better wait until after my Mom moves because right now, there's just too much stuff to be done to be optionally sick.

It seems to last 3 or 4 days for it to work itself out of my system. No pun inteneded.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
