I Might Be Crazy

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this. I hope so, because I don't want to think that I'm crazy...

Every afternoon at work I get bloated like a third-world child and I get gas pains. Bad ones. It happens whether I eat a little food or a lot, beans, raw fruit, or just cereal. I'm absolutely certain that I'm not getting glutened and I never have D as a result of all of the gas.

Is it just from sitting all day? Is that crazy? It does not happen on the weekends when I'm not sitting in front of a computer all day.

What can I do to make this better? I won't wear anything remotely tight to work because I inevitably look pregnant by the end of the day...

I don't have an answer for you but I am anxious to see what people say because I experience the same thing. Not a day goes by where I don't leave w/my stomach totally distended and bulging. I too do not wear tight clothes because it only makes it worse too!

I have the small problem. I wear clothes that are too big in the morning, but by the evening they either fit just right or a little tight. I'm gluten free too. It's really frustrating. Hope someone has the answer. I feel like the Michelin man. :P

I thought I was nuts! :P I also get really bloated by the end of the day. I didn't before I went gluten-free but now I do! I was thinking it's my body getting used to the new grains that until now, I had never massed consumed?! But I really have no idea wy it happens! I'm just glad I have alot of pajama's to put on for supper!

Don't know, but it could be just sitting.

Do you drink carbonated beverages or maybe dairy?

When I start feeling bloated, I take a Zantac-75 and after a while I feel better. Watch your co-workers, when you need to poot, be discrete. A good poot is a wonderful feeling. :rolleyes:

No carbonation. No dairy. And I can't fart at work. I just can't.

Anybody tried Beano, GasX, or the like?

It's frustrating. I don't even want my boyfriend to touch me by the end of the day because I just feel so fat and bloated.

Again, I have the same thing. I seem to have the same thing as every person who posts. That michelin-man analogy is just too funny. I can't wait till evening to put on pjs. If anyone has something they use that works, please let us all in on it. Also, does anyone have it really bad in the morning when they first get up? I have it bad before breakfast, too. Thanks! :blink:

In addition to Celiac I also have a large Hiatal Hernia , with that I take Omeprazole 20 mg. - generic for prilosic, once in the morning and also in the evening. That is veyr helpful and puts off surgery for as long as I can be comfortable.

I had terrible gas before I went gluten-free. I was worse on days when I worked, but I always thought that was because I was holding it in, so it accumulated. (Man, the conversations we have on here...) Anyway, when I'm home, or out in the world, I can release the gas periodically, so it doesn't become so bad.

I find that exercise does help to work it out, so the sitting all day could exacerbate a problem, but I doubt it would cause it all on its own.

All that said, I haven't had many problems with it since going gluten-free.

I love all of the ways you guys describe it. I just say I look like I'm 6 months pregnant! I normally weigh (when my stomach is the way it's supposed to be) like 117lbs. And when I get on the scale when I'm bloated (even in the morning before I eat) I'm like 7lbs heavier! Although I feel like I've gained 20! And yes, when I'm like this, I wear bigger clothes and my pants look so dumb because by the end of the day, they are tight around the waist and the butt is all baggy. <_< Ugly. So of course I have to wear a big sweater just to cover that up! Ahy yai yai!

Anyway, I've been realizing that it happens when I eat a food that I am intolerant to besides gluten. That's why I'm starting an elimination diet. For half of the day today, all I've had is pears and mangos and my stomach finally went down. Maybe you should try an elimination diet because that's what it's got to be. And try pears, they are very easily digested and might even help the bloating a little. At least for me they do.

I'm one of the 'puffs up bigger as the day goes on' people! I get tons of trapped gas in my upper abdominal area that can shoot upwards and cause pressure at the base of my throat. My GI told me to take Phayzame--and it does help! The softgels are gluten-free. The quick disolve tablets are NOT.

I HAVE IT BAD IN THE MORNINGS. SOMETIMES IT WAKES ME UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, FEEL LIKE I'M LAYING ON A BEACHBALL' SOMETIMES I HAVE NIGHT SWEATS WITH THE BLOATING. DOC THINKS IT IS IBS.

How long have you been gluten free? I used to get bloating like that for about one year after going gluten-free. I only seem to have bloating now when I accidentally have something I shouldn't.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

      Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

      After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!

      learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D  got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH   I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption
