I was gone for TWO DAYS and there are like, 30 more pages. I can't keep up!

things got crazy this weekend......we've fully formed the cult/sect/town called Rachelville - - I nominate you as gluten-free pastry chef.....you will take all of Paula Deen's recipes and make them legal for us....

Evie - - I LOVE hostas, can't grow them here, and peonies - - very difficult but can be done - - and lily-of-the-valley - - I only know one person who's grown them well here.....yes, we'll do flowers, we MUST have a cutting garden! Delphiniums, foxglove, lisianthus, miniature pink callas, plumeria, daphne (just to SMELL!), I could go on and on.....

Celia you are quite busy and funny with your migraine putting everyone in their designated jobs! hilarious! WE need some more men, I think, and an entire TEAM of gluten-free chefs so Miamia doesn't have to do all the work...

Picard, I'm thinking N. Carolina is perfect. But, we'll need our summer home in....Maine, I think, or the Canadian Rockies, or here by me, in the Sierra......longer flight though....

All right it's Monday and I'm not yet IN Rachelville, so must get to work!

This post keeps me endlessly entertained, I must say! So glad you guys let me crash the party.....

Hugs to all - - - :)

....I have made soap......still make glycerine soaps but not the lye kind (too taxing) AND candles, grow herbs, oh what fun we will have in our Rachel cult...

Miamia - so sorry you're not well - - just read along and enjoy until you feel better.

Rinne - what a lovely day you had (except the CT scan, I did have one last December and no problems) - - AND except for the news about your friend. I'm so so sorry about that....I dare hope for a staggering miracle and recovery, but it's not always the case. :(

Andrea - were you the one that asked? The dingos definitely are guard dogs - - well, one of them is, the other will just lick everyone to death....

GUESS WHAT ELSE - - - because of YOU guys, haven't eaten the Mesa Sunrise cereal in three or four days, and no more D! I cannot believe that might have been causing it.....I'll try it again next week and see waht happens.

Good morning to everyone and happy posting..... :)

Soap, where did you guys learn to make soap? Licked to death.:lol: That sounds familiar. I hope the Mesa Sunrise continues to be the answer to your recent "d".

Rinne,

I also extend my "sorry" about your friend. It's so hard to lose someone and I can just imagine what his family is going through, especially with little ones. One of my husbands co-workers died in a hit and run a few months back. He was walking away from his truck to pick up something on the exit ramp I believe. An illegal immigrant hit him. He was 35 and had a young one (under 3) at home plus one or two that were a little older. That threw me since it was someone I knew and it could happen to any truck driver. If something happened to my hubby I don't know what I would do. Your friend must be going through so much. I hope she has family as well as friends she can lean on.

making soap with lye is heinous....don't try it - - - v. difficult with heating to the exact right temp, getting ratios right, and curing for weeks in proper temp.. maybe Robbin has done it well - - -now when I make it I just melt glycerine bars, add scents, and pour them in molds......

Celia--Good to see you posting! Wish that pesky migraine would go away and leave you alone :D I love the job line up for Rachelville--the decor position is right up my alley! I would also like to throw my hat in the ring to assist Andrea in the school. I worked in our local high school as a sub/support person. LOVED it--I really relate well to teenagers, and them to me, so I could help out as the kids get older ;)

Evie--I have perennial gardens, too! I love the natural look of them. I plan to do another one on the shady side of my house. I'm looking into which plants will work best there. I have a couple pictures on my computer--if you ever want to see them, I could email them to you.

Rinne--I am sorry about your friend, also. So sad.

Victor--oops, I mean Vincent--did you deceide to do a water challange after all? Mine's working out well so far.

Can our town have no humidity??? I hate the stuff.

You know what I love about this thread? We are just coming forth with our gifts and passions, like a giant chatfest, and just getting to know so much about each other.....I think that's a great blessing and just a joy in itself! AND getting along so well while doing it, a very peaceful and comforting thread.

And no, no humidity in Rachelvillle and NO TEMPERATURES EVER above 85 (Rachel might not like that)...I say this as I am about to endure another 109 degree day.......wilting already......

I have lots of friends who are Mennonites and I'm sorry I wasn't here for that part of the thread. Up here we also have Hudderites, they live in their own communities, much like the Amish and they dress a little like them but they also use modern technology.

That is great and thank you for your kind words.

Thank you.

I like to cook - I ran a small organic deli for a while, I think we should produce a line of gluten free food, we could have a commercial kitchen to help support our community. :)

I really like the Mennonite homeschool materials. I like that Jesus is throughout the whole curriculum, not many curriculum's can say that.

So Rinne and Miamia and Chelsea are our main cooks/chefs.

Tony is captain for any water craft, so he can take Picard out for diving.

Mitch is truck driver, so he can haul whatever we need.

I will double with someone as co-treasurer if there is no one else who wants to take the job.

Celia,

I hope your migraine takes a hike soon! I don't think I've ever had a real migraine, just a few bad headaches in my past that got better with sleep.

yes, yes Vincent we can have snow, but only for......two months. :)

Definitely will be needing an AC, I threw that 85 in for Rachel (who likes the heat)

What state has all the weather conditions we want. I happen to believe that southern Oregon may be one and suitable. They have lots of snow in the winter and lots of sun in the summer and rain in between. :P Also could be near enough to the coast for Celia...except I don't know if any dolphins are here since the waters are colder than the gulf.

dlp252 Apprentice

Wait, I had it wrong, maybe instead of an icehouse we need a hot house, lol. Rachel can garden in the hothouse to get her hot fix. :D

Well Vincent, the only place I can think of that doesn't go over 85 (much) and snows a lot is Syracuse. I do not wish Syracuse weather on anyone! I had to walk a mile and a half, uphill, both ways, in two feet of snow (between October and May) to get to school. Ask Jersey, she knows and can vouch for me :P (Patti- tell them about the ridiculous hills between Westcott and Meadowbrook on Euclid  )

I vote for somewhere with like, 1 good snowfall a year. Always on Christmas, and the snow doesn't fall on the roads.

I'm up for chef :)

I love the peacefulness of snow, but yes, hate the roads...especially when Mitch is out on them all day. :(

Amen to that!

Snow on Xmas...I could definately live with that....especially since we wont be needing to shovel! :D

Susan...I'm ok with 85....I can deal...I'll hang in the hot house that Donna just suggested. I could totally see myself gardening in the hot house. I love it. :D

I did all my yardwork yesterday in the blazin heat and it felt sooo good. I drank a ton of water and was dripping sweat. I seriously think its a good thing to sweat out some of the toxins built up in me. I used to go sit in the sauna at the gym and just sweat...that was when I was on disability so had all the time in the world. I'd go in for like 10 minutes...take a break...and do it again. I still have my membership but just dont have all that free time anymore. Bummer. I highly recommend it though. Its pretty relaxing as well. I'd see these guys go in there and they'd actually be excersing in the 160 degree heat. Not me...H*ll NO....I just sit there relaxing on my towel listening to my tunes. B)

I'm up for chef :)

Chelse,

You're in for being one of the chefs. I'm totally out of the kitchen (believe me, you guys dont want me cooking your meals) and with all my restrictions I'll probably just be eating all the fresh food from the garden anyway. You can bake too...right? I thought I read where you made some yummy deserts before.

I don't think there is a place that exists with all of these conditions combined at any given time? It would have to be a "Fantasy Island", I would think?

I don't really have any special skills...

I can be in charge of the town punching bag

and I can be nice to everyone, like the Walmart greeter. I'll be the Rachelville greeter

How about the peacemaker. If you're the greeter that would mean more of the peacemaker wouldn't it?

Celia,

I'm so sorry...laughter is good for the soul when your down but not the head when it's pounding huh.

Julie I know what special skill you have... and I've seen it with my own eyes... this is a true story... there was someone on here asking about their blood work, hemoglobins and platlets and a bunch of other blood related words... can't remember who or what thread, I felt sorry for her but I don't know ANYTHING about blood work, other then what my doctors tell me.... BUT JULIE knew everything.... Julie you're really bright about all that stuff, you should be working in a lab....

You know what I added? My red blood cells are large and abnormally shaped  which is true but it sure didn't sound very intelligent :lol:

Julie you'll have to analyze all our blood work as needed... you will be our Lab Director.

Celia,

I'm so sorry you have a migraine. I hope it goes away quickly :)

I think you have me confused with another Julie, I know nothing about blood

Celia, you are too kind, but trust me, it was not me. All I know about blood is that it is red outside the body!

I think we need to train the guard geese to detect trace amounts of auxigro that may have drifted over from neighboring glutenville farms on the other side of the mountain. They can be sort of like dogs that sniff for drugs, but geese.

I need a job in Rachelville. It's starting to sound like quite the place. At least we know it will be well decorated, if nothing else. I mean gosh, what kind of cult farm has a design and decor committee?

I'm thinking we might be a couple posts short of being relocated down to the "Gab" category

Donna, was the book on inflammation you were looking at Dr Pericone's by chance?? Just curious.

 Good one Mango, auxigro detecting geese!

Since you are an adventurous one, you like to go over the hill to the mall and to travel to distant lands, maybe you can bring us isolated folk news form other civilizations? You know, our hub to the outside world? Just a thought.

Syracuse weather--lord almighty! It's also the 2nd cloudiest city in the country. Rarely do you see 2 sunny days in a row. After all the snow stops, there's still weeks of ugly brown slush all over the place. As you know Chelsea, I was up there last week--was actually on Euclid Ave. and your hills are still there

I second the vote for snow once a year--after that, it looses it's novelty, and fast!

Julie--You ARE so nice! :D I think you would be the perfect greeter/ambassador for our town.

Chelsea (again)--Having a chef who knows how to cook gluten-free is my idea of heaven. :) You're hired!

Celia--When you feel all better, you'll have to revise the town plan once more, cuz OMG, I think we're on to something!

Camille'sBigSister Newbie

Snow is a MUST in Rachelville! We'll always have snow at Christmas, of course, but may we please have at least three other good snows instead of just one? I'll volunteer to have the geese and the dingoes herd the cows and goats up and down the roads until they're clear of snow.

If I can leave the dogs in charge of the geese for a few hours, I want to help with decorating the powder rooms in our little houses. I'm a faux finish and decorative finish artist, and I have quite a collection of paint, but I know my limitations. Powder rooms are just my size! I'm also pretty good at small repairs around the house, so I'm happy to know there'll be a Lowes and a Home Depot at the other-side-of-the-mountain mall. We'll need a good fabric store too, to add to my collection. I'm insane when around fabric! I can't resist buying everything I fall in love with, much to my husband's chagrin. I can't help myself; it's a sickness. :P I'm leaving dear hubby in Georgia, by the way. Rachelville doesn't need an overly cautious, unimaginative pessimist, and besides, he'll be perfectly content hanging around here.

About our lake - What if we dam up our mountain stream to make a lake? I think we could do it so that the stream would keep flowing out the other side of the lake. Is there an engineer in our town?

Cissie

You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.
    • Ello
I wish Dr’s would have these discussions with their patients. So frustrating but will continue to do research. Absolutely love this website. I will post any updates on my testing and results.  Thank you
    • trents
Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.
    • Ello
Yes this information helps. I will continue to be pro active with this issues I am having. More testing to be done. Thank you so much for your response.
    • trents
There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until awakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher. I hope this helps.
