I Love to workout or exercise about 3-4 times a week nothing too intense but just like a 30 min walk on the tred mill with some streghth trainning weights, but I weigh 105 and am 5'6 I am tryin to gain some weight and without stopping doing the things I love, I would like to at least maintain, does anyone have any suggestions should I stop the workout all together for a while?

I worked out while gaining my weight back as I didn't want to just gain back fat. I lift weights, like guys do (free weights, 3 sets, until I cannot lift them one more time), and I think this was helpful. I was sure to get enough protein since I was building muscle. I also did cardio, but if you're having trouble gaining, I'd restrict that. Once I got off gluten, I didn't really have trouble gaining the weight back as long as I was eating a lot.

Protein and lots and lots of fatty foods is the only way to go.

Hey im 5'8" and just over 90. I wish i could be 105. Everyone thinks i'm bulimic

My weight right now is really low (only been on the diet for 3 months), but I would go nuts if I couldn't run, hike etc. I need to workout for my mental well being.

If you want to gain weight, I would eat a lot of healthy fats - nuts, avocados, olives. Eat as often as you can. I eat about every 2 hours to maintain my weight.

Molly, I wish you luck on your weight gain, I know the feelin of people thinking you have an eating disorder, the only eating disorder I have is I EAT ALL THE TIME from when I wake up til bed time, I am healthy but I just don't wanna cut out something I love to do just to gain weight, I am doing everything else I can.

I eat Lots of peanutbutter, and even though I dont like it I have been eating more hamburger and lots of Chocolate:)

I am 5'7'' and a half and about 95lbs. I used to be a runner at 125 (and healthy). My three doctors said no exercise but walking. I suggest you do the same.

Sounds like a good plan, I don't think a little free weights would hurt to build muscle though. I would like to gain back muscle. I have never weighed more than 112 so I am really not that far down from my norm I have only lost about 7 pounds since last year, I have been gluten free for 5 years so the diet hasn't changed much.

I'm 5 feet 6 and about 107lbs, I workout on my glider 4-7 days a week and lift weights 5 days, not too heavy about 12 lb weights, but I did gain 3 pounds from all the rice I'm eating..before going gluten-free I ate very little carbs, now its rice and chicken with dairy free chocolate..I Never, ever ate chocolate before

in the winter ppl think I'm too thin, but once summer hits they can tell I lift weights and I thankfully don't have to listen to "your too thin"

CarlaB Enthusiast

I was talking with my husband about this thread tonight. He said that he thinks the only reason I didn't get thinner than I did was because of my lifting weights. At my thinnest I was 121; I'm almost 5'8". I had dropped down to that from 135 in three months time; I got scared and started eating fattening things constantly and stopped losing even though I wasn't healthy or gaining. Size 4 jeans were falling off. I think I would have weighed 10 pounds less if I didn't have that muscle in my arms and legs. I lift as heavy weights as I can and still do three sets of 8-12 reps. Cardio on the other hand, only will burn calories, so I would avoid that if you're having trouble gaining. I'm doing cardio, but I'm up to 130 and comfortable there.

lorka150 Collaborator

My doc reiterated to be careful, luckily, I am naturally muscular, or who knows how much I would actually weigh? Weights = more muscle = you burn more when doing cardio.

Well if i was that weight ˆwould be thrilled, almost 5'8" and 95-100 opunds, and size 0 falls off!

molly - i hear that at 5'7''.5 and about 95lbs.

i wish i didn't have the bod of a middle schooler!

CarlaB Enthusiast

Yea, I was really, really lucky I found out what it was before I dropped more!!! It was coming off at about a pound per week for three months. I realized how fortunate I was after all of you were talking about your weight! My family thought I was dying though when I was dropping it so quickly, especially since most of my life I was careful to watch it! At one time I dieted by exercising and eating healthy to lose 20 pounds ... it took a year (that was almost 25 years ago when I was in college). I still had to work hard to gain it back (not after dieting, rather after getting sick), and I'm still eating all the time to keep it on. In fact, we went to Outback tonight for dinner, as soon as I got home I was already fixing myself a snack! Whenever I get glutened, I'll drop a quick 5 or 6 pounds and have to gain again! So, I may be a bit heavier, but it's all relative ... I understand how hard it is to gain.

Everyone thinks i go to the middle school down the road and am just freakishly smart, and take classes at Gunn (my high) people asked me if i was in 6th grade! And i'm in 10th.

It sucks!

lorka150 Collaborator

molly - i'm twenty-three, graduated with a bachelor's degree, and i am asked when i am finishing high school.

flagbabyds Collaborator

it sucks, one guy would not believe it, so i showed hime my SBC (student body card) and he was like woah, that's weird, are you annorexic?

lorka150 Collaborator

I get the eating disorder thing constantly. I had to learn to be comfy with my bod or it would drive me crazy. I felt so ugly for so long and frustrated becasue of lack of exercise. But now I feel a lot better.

flagbabyds Collaborator

i hate getting the annorexic thing, it compeltely sucks, everyone thinks that all i care about is my weight and i think that i am fat, which i am for sure NOT

lorka150 Collaborator

yes you are... fatty. :P

flagbabyds Collaborator

my face is swollen from surg this summer, so that is the factor that people can tell why i am not annorexic.

I'm 43, when you're my age, you'll LOVE being mistaken for being younger :D

My response when someone points out how SKINNY I am:

It is not socially acceptable to point out that someone is OVERWEIGHT, so why would you think it's okay to point out the fact that I'm underweight? It actually hurts my feelings, just like it would hurt someone's feelings to point out that he or she was "fat." I appreciate your concern, and I'm working with a doctor and nutrionist to try to gain some weight.

That usually gets the point across <_<

I went gluten free 3.5 years ago. since then i have gained 20 pounds. i was my high school weight for 20 years, and i thought i was just eating well and excercising. little did i know that i was incredibly malnourished and in fact though 20 lbs heavier still am. it takes a long time for the gut to heal, and the longer you've been sick, the longer it will take. i am also a vegetarian, and it is not something that keeps me thinner, just healthier. btw - do you think animals are fed grains and that those grains are in their flesh? just a thought - perhaps gluten is passed on through animal flesh to people who eat it.

If i were in your situation i think i'd go easy on the excercise, muscles burn much more calories than any other tissue in the body. perhaps focus on bulking up through extra calories through protein/fat/carbs.

lastly, are you up on your enzymes and probiotics? they'll help you absorb what you're eating.

good luck.

I love that line. My mil kept saying "you're so skinny" and I wanted to say "you're so fat!" But that would be mean. She doesn't say that to me anymore, luckily.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again
    • trents
You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
