Heinz Organic Ketchup Has Gluten In It-here I Go Again

I just got off the phone with a representative from Heinz. Very nice man by the way. I was calling to ask him about the Apple Cider Vinegar. He said that yes it contained gluten as well as the organic ketchup. I hadn't planned on asking about the ketchup, I had assumed it was gluten free by looking at the ingredients.

Luckily he mentioned this because I have a bottle of it in my refrigerator and just had some last night! :blink: All I can say is gluten is ELUSIVE. I'm going to start calling on every product now no matter what the ingredients say. By the way, Heinz will send you a list of their certified gluten free products if you call.

Just a little clarification...it is their apple cider FLAVORED vinegar that contains gluten :)

Are you saying that they make an Apple Cider Vinegar and an Apple Cider Flavored Vinegar??? :unsure:

Yes, the Apple Cider Vinegar is gluten-free, the Apple Cider *Flavored* Vinegar is not. I've never actually seen the flavored one....

Okay, I see now that they have 2 different vinegars, one has the word flavored in the name. :rolleyes: Thank you everyone.

Not to confuse you even more, but the dietician that I just saw on Monday for my son said that the Oragnic Ketchup is okay, that she personally called and spoke with some dietician at Heinz and that the reason they were saying it wasn't gluten-free was b/c of the vinegar in it. Our dietician has been working with the gluten-free diet for 20 years and is very knowledgeable on the topic, so I do trust her. That being said, I just used the plain Heniz Ketchup b/c is cheaper than the organic ;)

I'd agree about the organic being gluten-free. Heinz seems to be legally paranoid about saying distilled vinegar is gluten-free.

We make our own:

1 sm can of gluten-free tomato paste

fill can with water and add to paste

fill can half-way with apple cider vinegar

add sweetner (we use 1/2 teaspoon of agave necter)

salt / pepper to taste - mix well

it's not that hard - my 8yo makes it himself sometimes.

      What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.

      Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.

      I found at Disney springs and Disney they have specialist that when told about dietary restrictions they come and talk to you ,explain cross contamination measures tsken and work with you on choices. Its the one place I dont worry once I've explained I have celiac disease.  Thier gluten free options are awesome.

      Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.
