Delayed Reaction? How Possible?

Hi.

Can anyone help me with this? I've read a lot on here about people having the onset of a gluten reaction up to a week or so after ingesting gluten. First, I'd like to know how you are SURE what did it, and, second, I'd like to understand how that is possible? I can sort of wrap my mind around the notion given that it's an immune response, but then I just think it's all hogwash. The reason I'm asking is because I keep a food log and I'm having a bad reaction now but the only "new" things (supposed gluten-free aspirin) were a week ago and I felt good for days after taking them. I'm also trying to refine my detection methods. Thank you anyone who can illuminate this!

I have a lousy memory, :( but I don't recall anyone saying that their reaction to gluten taking a week before initial symptoms showed up. But, many of us have symptoms that last for awhile.

My last gluten challenge, with whole wheat, took 10 days to get out my system. I didn't get "D" this time, but total constipation instead. And horrible pains in my abdomen. :o Then as time went on this turned to non stop "D" all on it's own. I just ate my normal diet. It was 10 days before my stomach returned to the calm state I had experienced before this challenge.

I was having normal bm's up until that challenge and have had them consistenly since.

Prior to going gluten free, I would have bouts of "C" and bouts of "D" all the time .... :blink:

I have not been able to attribute my brain fog to a gluten cc issue. So far, I have found it more related to processed carbs and my hypoglycemia. But I am just looking into msg, sulfites, etc. <_<

I find that I react pretty immediately, but the reaction involves a series of bodily events that wipe me out for about four days and then finally disappear about one and a half to two weeks later. The onset of my reaction involves intense anxiety, tension and insomnia -- however, if I'm already under a lot of stress (as has been the case on and off recently), I don't always pick it up right away. The GI stuff starts to show up one to two days later.

The insomnia, I've now figured out, is actually a pretty good clue -- I've realized that, no matter how stressed I am, I can always pretty much fall asleep regardless of what's going on in my life. Not the case when I'm having a reaction.

Good question. I'm thinking of doing a food diary and it's this sort of issue that's delaying me starting.

I did get glutened about 3 weeks ago. I know I did because I drank barley water without knowing it was barley water, so I found out afterwards that I'd definitely had gluten. I had IBS type pains for 3 or 4 days and only after that did the D arrive. After that my stomach felt much better but then the emotional symptoms kicked in. Maybe phone the aspirin company and check they are definitely gluten-free, or post on the product board here to see if anyone else has had trouble with that brand. Good luck with the hunting!

Thank you all for your replies; maybe it was that people said the symptoms lasted a week. I just can't figure out what I just had and had been feeling so much better for about a week and now I am reacting horribly to something- bad abdominal pain and bloat, distension. I'm hoping it will go away soon!

Actually it is a delayed gut reaction for many. That is one of the reasons it is so hard to pin down. Intolerance reactions will often show up about 3 to 7 days after consuming the offending food. This was explained to me in detail by my allergist when we did the elimination diet but I was too foggy to remember exactly why except that it had something to do with the time it takes the gut to form the antibodies and react. He was very firm that I should add in only one food a week and that I should watch for a gut reaction anywhere from 3 to 7 days later. This has followed through with my experience with accidental glutenings. The brain effects and depression hit quickly along with a rumbling tummy but the explosive and painful D hit me 3 days after I consume the food. Gluten is not alone in this we even see this sort of delay with food poisoning. Most people blame the last meal before they got ill but in reality the poison was injested 24 to 72 hours previously. I was a chef and in NY the head chef is required to so to yearly Health Dept. seminars where they make us learn lots about food borne illness, too bad they don't also teach cooks about gluten.

If that is the case, it could be the Bayer aspirin or another I took (local brand) that I could only find info on from 3 years ago. It's so incredibly frustrating that it is so difficult to locate the culprit with this condition! Sometimes I just think it isn't gluten at all, just I can't tolerate ANY foods! I'm so leery of trying ANYTHING new, especially processed, and I already exclude so much, it's hard to eat! I know many feel this but I still feel like I'm going crazy sometimes. I wish I could get to a "run" where I do okay for ,say, a couple of weeks or more? I'm at the 5 month mark and hungry and thin! Thank you again!

Just as an aside, I use St. Josephs baby asprin only, in recent heart testing and ultrasounds my heart looks like I eat only high fat bad for you food. The doctors attributed this to my chronic inflammation problems what went on for years before the celiac was found. I also use this asprin for pain relief even though I have to take 8 at a time. It is the only one I know for sure and for certain is gluten-free. I'm not saying I am sure Bayer asprin isn't safe but their response to my query about it made me nervous. You have made sure to eliminate gluten from all nonfood items also I hope.

Yes, Bayer made me nervous as well. I will get the St. Joseph's brand, thank you. Still struggling with symptoms today. Maybe this is delayed from the aspirin. I am pretty fanatical about what I eat- the only processed food is Erewhon"s Rice Krispies, (supposedly gluten-free), some sugar (white and/or Turbanot) and Lundbergh rice cakes! I'm still wracking my brains and searching my food log! Thank you again.

OMG... I feel like you have just opened a door for me... I hope you read this... even though its novel length

Exactly 10 years ago I started having bowel problems. Let me tell you... Ive been to at least 50 different doctors. Im not kidding. Each one had a different response...Oh youre constipated, eat more fibre... Oh you have IBS... Oh, its caused from stress. I'd argue with them that THIS was IMPOSSIBLE... At the same time I had NO energy, was tired all the time, my moods would change. I got a new diagnosis, this one was fun... I have depressive anxiety??? Im NOT depressed or anxious I would tell them... Anyways, THEYRE the doctors, so I took their myriad of crappy drugs... I still had the problems... Ill explain in detail later.

Fast forward: The past few years it got WORSE. The pains would come at least 3 times a week. Id miss work. This MADE me anxious. I was eating VERY well. Lots of fruits, vegetables, etc. Im surprised I didnt grow branches! Sometimes I wouldnt go to the bathroom for a week and would have to go to Emerge to get an enema.. Sorry if this is too graphic. Then the next day major D. I would start sweating, and end up taking off all my clothes because the clothes hurt?? Id start passing out on the CAN. I have two kids and it honestly, felt like childbirth. Im sure you understand the pain. I would start crying and panic.

I was off and on the crappy drugs for years. Sometimes only 2 months a year, or none at all, or sometimes for 1.5 years. NOTHING worked. I thought I was CRAZZZZYYYY! Now I was getting depressed lol.

During all of this, on the side, I was taking these so called Anxiety attacks... (Said my doctor) The room spins, you start shaking, sweating like a pig, pain SO bad in the stomach, everythings surreal. Massive D and C at the same time. Not always. Id end up on the bathroom floor for an hour.. NO KIDDING... This was ecspecially emabarassing in public places, where they'd have to close the bathroom down, get help, and stand over me while I shook like a fish out of water putting ice bags all over me....for 45 mins!!!! Oh Im having an anxiety attack Id tell them... They'd wheel chair me out once it was over.... I couldnt go anywhere, I felt trapped. Im only 32 now.

My loving brother sent me a link for hypoglycemia... -I was off the crappy doctor drugs for awhile at this point. After everything I tried, I was trying this diet!!! SURE ENOUGH, it worked!!! and I KNOW i have hypoG. I refuse to check it with a doctor after the misdiagnosis for 10 years... Sure enough its been a year and NOT ONE full fledged spinning, passing out, attack. I noticed this because the meds for depression and anxiety SUPPRESS the appetite!!! You know youre SUPPOSED to eat. Hence I was getting WORSE!!!! I have actually induced these attacks on 3 occassions... Only to satisfy my own diagnosis... SURE ENOUGH... I dont eat for 3-4 hours and I start shaking etc, weak, passing out, stomach problems... I take sugar and its gone!!! I wont do it again as I know in my heart Im hypoG. When I start feeling anything resembling one -which is sooo rare now, I eat!!!! and its GONE!.... Darn Doctors!!! NO more passing out, intense pain etc. and I DO eat very healthy.. Its strange, but I had to be consistant. I ate healthy but sparodically before.

Ok next...lol sorry this IS long...

The room spinning etc is gone, now I still have the bowel problem... Over a month ago I bought rye bread for the first time and for 1 week!!! It felt like I had a hot curling iron on my stomach. For one WHOLE day I was on the... you know... The next I had D.. rarrrgh.... I only ate a few slices... I waited another week and ate the cursed bread again... sure enough... I missed 6 days of work in less than 2 months... The short end is, I started the gluten free diet. NO PROBLEMS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER....!!!! NOTHING... Normally its 3x a WEEK. It has been ZEROOOOO in over a month!!!! NOTHING... really!!! Last night I ate a sandwich with regular bread which i had avoided... and today... im in the bathroom ALL day... Pain... I was crying. Work thinks Im playing hooky, Im sure.... The test worked!

Ok so, in saying all of this, I have not, with the exception to your post, been able to find anything linking HypoG with GlutenI. I know this reply was a LONG way of thanking you, but please understand after everything for ALL these years, just to see those words was a gift. I was also looking for info on how long it takes to effect your body and to hear that it was awhile for you too sometimes after eating something, REALLY made relieved. I also have a few questions and Im sorry for being so naive.

1. Do you know if theres a link between HypoG and GlutenI? Or is HypoG caused from GlutenI? ie: from nutrient defienciency? I would think theyre linked because my so called anxiety attacks seemed like a SEVERE form of what I go through on a daily basis, pain wise and bowel wise. Could they be the same thing?

Although the shaking goes away from eating, and eating doesnt help when you're on the CAN with a gluten problem. I hope that makes sense.

2. How do you manage the two? I normally ate bread when I started feeling weak, just to fill in the blanks, but now I find it still hard to eat gluten free. (I eat a candy now, followed by a salad normally)

Any info you have on linking the two together would be great. ie: you mentioned gluten and processed carbs in terms of your Hypo. I find gluten free products so expensive :(

There is a link between blood sugar problems and gluten, a definate one. I am diabetic because of undiagnosed gluten intolerance. When you are having a problem with hypoglycemic reactions you need to get a carb and a protein in. Grab that piece of candy but follow it within 15 minutes with some protein and a little more carbs. A slice of gluten-free bread with pnut butter or some cheese etc. That will help your sugar to get to a good level without causeing it to spike suddenly then drop. Also make sure you bring up the shaking with your doctor to make sure that something more serious isn't going on. I used to find my DD on the floor often and I have had this sort of thing happen as a reaction to the extreme pain so hopefully things will get better after you are gluten free.

Sorry I don't have any answers for you on the hypog/gluten connection, but I'm relatively new to all this too. And still trying to figure things out. I just found out I was hypo G 6 weeks ago. <_<

I would not have thought they were linked if Ravenwoodglas had not said that they were.

This board is a great place for learning new things about your diet. :D Hopefully, we can both get this all figured out and move on to living life. :)

Hi although hypoglycemia is not diabetes the link between diabetes and celiac makes me think IMHO that the 2 can be related. I had hypoglycemia for years but only recently have become diabetic. I'm placing a link to some articles on the home site about the link and if I find any specific to hypoglycemia I'll add those.

I am a little late coming across this thread. I have hypoglycemia also. I was diagnosed in April and then recently found out that I have celiac disease. I really believe that celiac disease caused my hypoglycemia. I think I had celiac disease long before and had I known it I may have been able to prevent the hypoglycemia. Right now I am hoping a life time of being gluten free will cure my hypo symptoms. I have come across some links online that mention an association between them. Here are a few:

As far as my hypoglycemia goes, I find that eating small amounts of protein with carbs and fat all through the day help. I also eat gluten free bread as a substitute for gluten bread. Removing gluten from my diet pretty much eliminated any anxiety or depression I had.

This thread has migrated... but I also am hypoglycemic, though it is sooooo much more manageable now that I am gluten free. Examples - after being gluten free a year and a half, I can now eat some sugars (not corn-based) and I can have caffeine. At this moment, in fact, I am drinking a blender mocha (it's fair trade chocolate and organic sugar) which certainly would not have been possible even a year ago. I try not to overdo it and if I eat sweets more than a couple of days in a row, I have to cut back or I start getting a little weird, but have not had a genuine hypo crash in a long time.

Some level of normalacy is returning. It's funny how nice it is to be able to drink regular coffee on occasion, the little things.

I have had some delayed reactions, but usually no more than a couple of days. Though I have been suspicious because this last week has been weird. Also, I got glutened about two months ago and my digestion has been weird ever since, especially with constipation. The last three weeks have been worse - maybe it's stress (certainly a factor in my life right now). While I almost never get that anymore, I have not been able to shake it yet, and had to resort to taking Zelnorm last night (daily psylliam and increased magnesium, plus lots of fresh summer fruit - peaches, plums, etc, not making the cut). I wonder sometimes if you can just get thrown off track and stay that way for a while? Sort of seems wrong, but who knows.

      He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

      Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

      @Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana

      I was diagnosed with coeliac disease a couple of years ago [ish]. I love my food and a variety of food, so it's been hard, as it is with everyone. I try and ensure everything I eat doesn't contain gluten, but occasionally I think something must have got through that has gluten in. Mainly I know because I have to dash to the loo, but recently I have noticed that I feel nauseous after possibly being glutened. I think the thing that I have got better at is knowing what to do when I feel wiped out after a gluten 'episode'. I drink loads of water, and have just started drinking peppermint tea. I also have rehydration powders to drink. I don't feel like eating much, but eventually feel like I need to eat. Gluten free flapjacks, or gluten free cereal, or a small gluten free kids meal are my go to. I am retired, so luckily I can rest, sometimes even going to bed when nothing else works. So I feel that I am getting better at knowing how to try and get back on track. I am also trying to stick to a simpler menu and eat mostly at home so that I can be more confident about what I am eating. THANKS TO THOSE WHO REPLIED ABOUT THE NAUSEA .
