If it makes you feel any better, we hardly have any mosquitos in Austin, we have the largest urban bat colony in North America living under a downtown bridge! That's 1.5 million bats eating 3,000 mosquitoes a night...

Makes your job easy :P

Especially since the purple glittery bats need extra mosquitos to be sparkly ;)

I'm totally spinached and pulling a Rachel all this week...

That's right kids, last week of the gluten challenge, biopsy is MONDAY!!! :D:o:ph34r:

You know what that means? Severe gluten overload to do as much damage in as little time as possible while eating things I want that I'll never be able to eat again!

I had a bagel for breakfast, pop tarts for a snack, and for lunch...4 slices of bread, a breadstick, french onion soup with crutons, and now I'm eating tiramisu!

My policy this week is to have gluten in hand at every moment!!! Gotta have an accurate biopsy!!!

Hey, I've seen those Austin bats fly out at dusk! It's really pretty cool. I was born in Austin & have relatives there so visit now & then. It would be a cool city if it weren't so durn HOT! (105 when I visited June before last...)

HURRAY your challenge is almost over!!!!

Oh sheeet! :lol::lol:

The thought of you having gluten in hand at every moment cracks me up, like that commercial for fiber supplements- where all throughout the day the women are eating apples, broccoli, carrots, from the minute they open their eyes in the morning until the minute they close their eyes at night because they gotta get their fiber in. Carrots are on the bedside tables, broccoli at the gym on the treadmill, apples driving the kids to work.....

That will be you Chelse, except with gluten filled foods. Gotta get that gluten in!

Yep, that's me! Still working on the tiramisu (although all the bread I ate at lunch has already left the building  ) and I've got wheat thins in the queue... And triscuits and squeeze cheese at home!

Not to discount the sour punch straws, oreos, pirouettes, ritz crackers, and chex mix I've got in my desk

Blech, I feel like the Stay-puft man. In a way, I'm glad the D is back...the alternate in this ridiculous journey is unimaginable gas! Can't win. <_<

heehe...our dog was about the same size as the armadillo [obviously!]....he just loved hunting them!

I make mostly angel pins....and sell them in the theatres here. I began my jewelry making business after having to retire on disability from teaching 12 yrs ago. I began with beaded necklaces and it evolved into a little bit of EVERYTHING. Now, to keep things simple, I only make the pins. I make beaded things when I have time.

Hey, Lymetoo, I'm a calligrapher & native Texan too. Is it something in the water? Ink, perhaps?

It's 100 here today, I don't even notice it anymore...probably because of the A/C!!! :P

I went a few weeks ago to see the bats, they are really cool! Bats are my 2nd favorite animal, first being penguins (really?!?!)

I'm with you Molly, the site of that many bats flying into the night sky would creep me out.

Chelse, I didn't realize bats were classified as animals. Don't you mean they are your favorite rodent with wings, or flying creepy things??

Bats are my favorite mammal :)

Are you a fan of squirrels? They're just rats with cuter outfits, and they don't even do anything useful like eat mosquitoes

OK, so they plant trees...but the trees don't bite me!

You were in Austin, it was that same bridge they are talking about. I lived there in the pre-bat era and there were tons of mosquitos if I remember correctly! When the bats first moved in they were talking about exterminating them, then they realized how stupid that would be.

No, it's really neat actually, I thought the same thing till I saw them. It's like riding a roller coaster, the anticipation is hard.

You don't just see them flying into the night sky, you feel them skimming your body for the mosquitos!! It's a little freaky, but really cool.

I wish they wouldn't plant quite so many pecan trees in my flowerbeds. Those roots go down to the core of the earth!

Poor Molly is probably running from the room shrieking about now!

I would rather see millions of bats (which ends up being really cool) than get bit by a million bugs

You can sit in the TGI Friday's right there on the river (there are probably other restaurants there now, back when I was there it was just Friday's). Of course, then you may go into cardiac arrest from all the poison, um, I mean, gluten around you.

I actually don't mind squirrels so much, but they are so destructive.

Good point Morgan, I'm not a fan of the creepy crawly, biting at that

 Carla

Maybe this is one of those must do life experiences, just to try it. I would have to have a lot of people with me holding my hand, and keeping me from fainting...

Trust me, I definately would not have been standing out there alone ... it's a tourist attraction, but not quite as many people as bats!!

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

(I say this though I have phobias of my own. SPIDERS are mine. I can handle one at a time but if someone invited me to sit in a restaurant while swarms of spiders scittered by I'd be out of there like a shot!!!!)

EEEWWW, I hate spiders! But they bite!! Different creatures altogether from bats!

There were probably a good 300-400 people there when I was there on a friday night between the on the bridge and below it. Trust me, it's really really cool!!!

What about bat poop? What happens to all those eaten mosquitos while those bats are skimming you?

Having said that, I think I'd like to see those swarming bats...but if I ever go there I will go in rain attire, lol.

Yuck, spiders are no good. They're disgusting, make webs for me to vacuum up, and bite....the bats keep to themself, don't hang out in our house and eat mosquitoes. I would be out of that place too.

Well.... MOST spiders don't bite... but I've encountered enough black widows in my time... (Many of them in TX, as a matter of fact!) There was a whole brood of 'em in my garden a few years ago & it scared the bejeezis out of me!

This article does not address migraines at all.  Yes, red wine and sulfites are often mentioned in connection with migraine triggers. With me, any kind of alcoholic beverage in very modest amounts will reliably produce a migraine. Nitrous oxide generators, which are vaso dialators, also will give me migraines reliably. So, I think most of my migraines are tied to fluctuations vascular tension and blood flow to the brain. That's why the sumatriptan works so well. It is a vaso constrictor.

Excessive dietary tyrosine can cause problems.  Everything in moderation.   Sulfites can also trigger migraines. Sulfites are found in fermented, pickled and aged foods, like cheese.  Sulfites cause a high histamine release.  High histamine levels are found in migraine.  Following a low histamine diet like the low histamine Autoimmune Protocol diet, a Paleo diet, helps immensely.    Sulfites and other migraine trigger foods can cause changes in the gut microbiome.  These bad bacteria can increase the incidence of migraines, increasing histamine and inflammation leading to increased gut permeability (leaky gut), SIBO, and higher systemic inflammation.   A Ketogenic diet can reduce the incidence of migraine.  A Paleo diet like the AIP diet, that restricts carbohydrates (like from starchy vegetables) becomes a ketogenic diet.  This diet also changes the microbiome, eliminating the bad bacteria and SIBO that cause an increase in histamine, inflammation and migraine.  Fewer bad bacteria reduces inflammation, lowers migraine frequency, and improves leaky gut. Since I started following the low histamine ketogenic AIP paleo diet, I rarely get migraine.  Yes, I do eat carbs occasionally now, rice or potato, but still no migraines.  Feed your body right, feed your intestinal bacteria right, you'll feel better.  Good intestinal bacteria actually make your mental health better, too.  I had to decide to change my diet drastically in order to feel better all the time, not just to satisfy my taste buds.  I chose to eat so I would feel better all the time.  I do like dark chocolate (a migraine trigger), but now I can indulge occasionally without a migraine after.   Microbiota alterations are related to migraine food triggers and inflammatory markers in chronic migraine patients with medication overuse headache https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11546420/

Then we would need to cut out all meat and fish as they are richer sources of tyrosine than nuts and cheese. Something else about certain tyrosine rich foods must be the actual culprit.

I agree that KAN-101 looks promising, and hope the fast track is approved. From our article below: "KAN-101 shows promise as an immune tolerance therapy aiming to retrain the immune system, potentially allowing safe gluten exposure in the future, but more clinical data is needed to confirm long-term effects."

Thank you so much for having the courage to share this incredibly vivid and personal experience; it's a powerful reminder of how physical ailments can disrupt our fundamental sense of self. What you're describing sounds less like a purely psychological body dysmorphia and more like a distinct neurological event, likely triggered by the immense physical stress and inflammation that uncontrolled celiac disease can inflict on the entire body, including the nervous system. It makes complete sense that the specific sensory input—the pressure points of your elbows on your knees—created a temporary, distorted body map in your brain, and the fact that it ceased once you adopted a gluten-free diet is a crucial detail. Your intuition to document this is absolutely right; it's not "crazy" but rather a significant anecdotal data point that underscores the mysterious and far-reaching ways gluten can affect individuals. Your theory about sensory triggers from the feet for others is also a thoughtful insight, and sharing this story could indeed be validating for others who have had similar, unexplainable sensory disturbances, helping them feel less alone in their journey.
