Chelsea,

I hope you get better and better each day. I know it must be hard, especially with the pain. HUGS.

Oh Chelse, I'm so sorry. I imagine your intestinal tract took a severe beating with all of the gluten for so long, so things have to be pretty stirred up. I don't really know much about the spasms (sounds a little bit like Rachel's alien baby), I would think it was from an irritant of some kind? It has to be very frustrating for you. Hopefully as you continue with the gluten-free diet you will heal and see some improvement. Hang in there!

I've had these for 3 or 4 years now. When they first started, I had them about once a week. They eventually tapered off to about where they are now, once every month or two. It's not like the alien baby, it's muscle spasms in my stomach muscle that are INCREDIBLY painful, about an 9 on the smiley face pain scale. I have yet to find a specific trigger, sometimes I can trace it back to something like orange juice, sometimes stress, sometimes irritating foods, but there is never a clear cut trigger. There is no rhyme or reason to it at all, and it never happens the same way twice. This time it could have been from the endoscope and it was a delayed reaction to that irritation, there's no way to know. I've tried diet changes, like no greasy food, carbonated drinks, no acidic food, no caffene, no milk (individually and all at once) and it would still happen. You're right, IT'S VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

Oh, and to add insult to injury, it happens whether or not I'm on gluten. I guess I can make that a more definitive statement on that front after I've been gluten-free for more than a year.

I'm feeling a little stronger these days... I think maybe just maybe I'm starting to absorb iron. I hope so anyway! I get tested again in a month & will know some answers then.

Also yesterday I FINALLY convinced my sister to be tested for Celiac! She has so many symptoms, arguably more than I do (though no anemia), but until yesterday she kept brushing off my suggestion. She's still not going to do anything until her yearly physical in November, but at least she promised to ask for the tests then. I'm so happy because I have a feeling this diet could really be the answer for her.

That's interesting, Julie

Actually, makes perfect sense! How've you been?

I'm good Patti, how are you?? We are always missing each other lately on the board

Is there a name for it, or do the doctors not really know anything about it? That makes it difficult when you can't pinpoint it to anything. I'm like you with my angioedema, no rhyme or reason for it, or anything to do about it. But I keep trying to find the answers. I am hoping that things improve for you the more you heal :)

Good to hear you are feeling stronger, that's a great sign that things are moving in a positive direction.

And great news about your sister! I wish I could get my family on a gluten-free diet, but they don't take it seriously or think it's a problem for them :(

Interesting is a word I use when something "interests" me.

All right then, you're off the hook. I'd heard "interesting" as a euphemism for "ugly" so many times with my dog that it rubs me the wrong way sometimes.

Person to my husband (gushing): Oh your dog is beautiful!

Husband (beaming): Thank you.

Person to me (with a tone I can't decsribe - maybe horror): Oh. Your dog is interesting too.

My dog now gets called a "Goober" a lot and since it suits him, I'm not offended. He is a goober. But my little Scout was beautiful. In an "interesting" kind of way.

Meanwhile, Chelsea, if you're putting up with this pain all the time, childbirth will be a gluten-free cake walk when the time comes.

AndreaB Contributor

Leah,

That's great on both fronts! :D

Chelsea,

Hopefully this is something that will heal in time as you are gluten free longer. It must be very annoying not being able to pinpoint something.......same for you Julie. :(

My family is also one that would bury their heads in the sand. Mitch's ex was going to look into testing. She says she has IBS. We were wanted Mitch's second oldest tested since he has bipolar and diabetes. Diabetes just diagnosed. He doens't show any symptoms either but we know all the boys got one celiac gene from Mitch since he has two. Mitch is the only one in our family that isn't active on the intolerance/celiac but he's still gluten free.

Same here. I've been pretty busy myself. My husband & I were supposed to go toBristol this weekend but decided to pass it up at the last minute because our daughter was invited to a slumber party that she really wanted to attend. We went antique shopping all day yesterday & went out to a lake at a state park & took a walk around it. It was a nice day. We are getting ready to go pick Kate up & then go racing. wish me luck. Well, I'll talk to you all later.

Carla, did you make it to the Commodores last night, and how were they if you did??

Hi Julie: Just taking a break from trying to catch all the tumbleweeds, I tell you, I take a couple of days off and look what happens! No I haven't checked anything off the list, hopefully soon! Thank-you for asking, you are always so kind.

Good for you Leah, I think I have mentioned that my mom and brother were diagnosed in the last year, my brother wasn't even sick but had lots of damage, no villi and it had already affected his bones.:unsure: I had been after him for at least a year prior just to get tested, he had asked his doctor who asked him why he would want to go on such an awful diet if he wasn't having any symptoms!

Another brother did not go get tested but was quite ill and has had positive results going gluten free

It seems like some people are of the mind that this is just the disease of the month! Oh, well gotta let it go, sorry for the rant

AndreaB Contributor

Rant away Tavi.

I'd be upset with the doctor of your brother also.

Why do most doctors etc think that this diet is so hard?

I'm glad they found out about celiac and can now work towards better health.

Just a thought Andrea, they might then have to admit they are not always right?:lol::lol:

I did make it! Thanks for asking. I was a pretty fatigued, but enjoyed it nonetheless. I slept on the way home LOL. They were GREAT! I had pretty low expectations since there are only two original members and you don't really hear about them anymore ... but I always like their music ... they were quite the showmen and I highly recommend seeing them! Some concerts are a disappointment, but theirs was a pleasant surprise, even when I was feeling crummy.

I'm worried about my sister's bones too-- she's had back pain ever since I can remember & I worry it might be related. She's younger than I but has had dairy intolerance for a long time, plus candida, depression & anxiety... well, at least she's getting tested. I just hope her doctor isn't such a dork...

HI MORGAN!!!!!

I hope it didn't mess up your schedule too much. :( I always hated having to rearrange everything.

Glad to hear that everything is going well and that you got a new job! That's great that you got a house. Should be much easier for you as far as cc issues. We will continue to await your muffin investigation. :D

I ended up finding an extra schedule in my orientation bag the next day....so everything worked out :) It wouldn't have messed me up in much, but I just wanted to have one for my own state of mind

I'm still feeling yucky ... :(

We're going to see the Commodores tonight. The concert's not till nine, so I'm going to have to rest all day so I can make it!!

Did you get some new "date" jeans to wear there? You didn't tell me yesterday that you were going to see the Commodores <_<

Good girl Morgan! The social scene has a way of sucking you in, it's great that you have your priorities set. If you balance the two you will do fine. I had a hard time myself doing that

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yea, classes sure got in the way of college, didn't they?!

:lol::lol: I start Monday :huh:

Yea, got a new pair of "skinny jeans", you know the new ones that have straight legs ... if you're going to be too skinny, you may as well wear skinny jeans! I got them at Abercrombie.

I thought you knew we were going.

lol No it probably wouldn't I just hung out with some people on my floor....traveled to some of their friends dorms and then walked around. Then we came back and watched TV. It sounds boring, but I had fun. It was more interesting when there than when reading about it.

Did you go to St. Paul's or are you going tonight? I think the students generally like the 5:30 or 9PM masses.

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.

Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.

Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
