Salad Bars

I know it's probably crazy to ask, but anyone risk getting lunch from a salad bar? Salad from Wholefoods used to be my favorite lunch, and they do keep the veggies segregated from the prepared foods that are loaded with various wheats. I know there's a fairly solid risk of CC, but anyone give it a try?

I used to love salad bars. I don't go near them anymore. The ones at Whole Foods are better at segregation, but how many times when making a salad did random things drop in the wrong bowl, or tongs get moved around? When I first was diagnosed, I thought "how bad can at be?". Then I went and took a good look, with new eyes, and saw possible contamination everywhere. Wayyy too scary.

I meant to add, I make my own fun salads now. I've added it up and its much cheaper. I make them in the morning in a big tupperware, pour on some Annies and then enjoy at lunch. My current favorite is baby greens, pecans, cranberries, tomato and Basil Feta and Annies Balsamic Vinnagrette.

Yum.

I dont go to salad bars at all anymore. ummm.. except I must admit.. sometimes Whole Foods. Our Whole Foods seems to be meticulous about cc. I have never had a problem there. I have only done it 3 times since my diagnosis. And I am probably just lucky.

There is no where else I would even attempt it.

I stay away from salad bars. In the end it just isn't worth the risk. I can make my own at home and not get sick.

I eat at the salad bar at our local health food store deli all the time. The only things that contain wheat are the crackers and croutons at the very end, so I don't try the other little things like raisins, sunflower seeds and dried fruit that are nearby. This might be unusual though, since most salad bars have pasta salad and things like that. This one has dressing in little pitchers - no scoops. I've never had a problem and I've eaten there literally dozens of times.

I will get a salad from the Whole Foods salad bar at times, if I am in a pinch and need food and can't find somewhere safe to go, but I am selective about what I get, and scan carefully for visible signs of contamination. It's certainly not risk free, and I wouldn't use one at many other places (certainly not the ones with smaller bins), but I think that it's not all evil.

I eat from our salad bar at the cafeteria at work pretty often. A lot of times I'll get grilled chicken from there and roasted zucchini or sweet potatoes, ect. But I won't get anything from there if any of the items are next to something that has gluten in them. So for instance if the grilled chicken happens to be next to pasta that day, I won't get it.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
