Utz Chips Ok?

I noticed some bags of Utz potato chips have a statement that says: this is a gluten-free food. But their website says they are produced in facilities that process other products that may contain gluten. Before giving them a try, I was just wondering if anyone eats the plain flavor regularly....and if they are ok.

I eat them (and other flavors too) all the time and never had a problem. The chips themselves (inherently, as as cooked) ARE gluten free, but have the legal mumbo jumbo to cover them "in case" of CC which is possible....basically I believe that almost ALL foods available to the general public that aren't made specifically to be gluten-free, are usually at risk for CC, and if you avoided all foods at risk fro CC you would be on an extremely restricted, "raw food" diet. CC is a perpetual problem that probably will never go away, and we all will havv e "gotcha once in a while." We just do our best and we all have different personalities and different thresholds for risk-taking (note I'm NOT saying we have different gluten tolerances! I'v been beat up on this forum for saying that - although I PERSONALLY believe it to be true....)......HOWEVER,

I just try to avoid the most obvious and likely CC risks, such as grills in restaurants, toasters, Quaker Oats, boxed cereals that appear gluten-free, and I don't eat at private homes other than my own (except things like chips in the bag, pickles from the jar with a label) etc. People and companies intend well but don't understand the issues.....

So for UTZ, I've had pretty good luck so far.

I had a reaction to them. I know a lot of people eat them with no problems, but they made me sick within about 2 hours (my usual reaction time).

I don't have good luck with chips, in general :(

I eat that brand(the ones that are gluten free) and have not had a problem

I always eat Grandma UTZ chips because of their gluten statement on the bag. I've never had a problem and lately I seem to be awfully sensitive.

Generally speaking Utz seems to be one of the better choices based on comments from people with celiac disease who eat them.

I usually eat the plain ridiges one, and the onion and sour cream ones (addicted to those) and I never had a problem. The plain ones specifically state gluten free on the bag. The onion and sour cream dont. If you read the label though there is nothing in the ingredients that would hurt. I agree on the only chance for that is CC.

Thanks for all the input.

I went ahead and tried two of the Utz brands: the Mystic plain salted and the Natural lightly salted (both stated they were gluten-free). Unfortunately, they did not agree with me. :(

But I'm one of those super-sensitives whose had trouble with all brands of potato chips. Even the one brand I was able to tolerate (Hard Bite out of British Columbia) has come off my list ever since they changed their ingredients a few months back.

;) I just might have to start making my own potato chips.

And maybe farming my own potatoes.

This could be a problem since I live on the 17th floor of a highrise building.

And I don't have a balcony.

Gibbles brand chips told me that all of their potato chips are gluten free and produced on gluten free lines. This was about a year and a half ago though. They seemed very knowledgeable and the guy I spoke to was very nice. I never got sick off of Gibbles either and their BBQ chips are fabulous. :) They do make pretzels and rolls there too, I'm not sure if they're in the same factory though. I should drive over there and check. Ha. Anyway, maybe they would be ok for you?

I spoke to Bob King, the Manager of Production. He took my number, checked with his production guy and called me back--their whole line of snack foods made there are gluten-free!

The breads and rolls are made at a separate factory 6 miles away!!!

The best part--they carry them at a small grocery store right in my town! I'm going out to pick up a Rx for my husband, and will swing by and pick up a bag :D

Woo-hoo! So they're still gluten free? Yea!!! They are AWESOME chips too, very good. I hope that maybe you've found a chip that's safe for you. Gibbles are made (I think) practically down the road from my house, in the next town over, so I thought they were just a local brand. I guess you're close enough to get them too.

That's okay... No one can ever spell or pronounce our name right. It's Guhl, like a halloween gouhl (sp?). My friends call me Guhlia because of Julia Guhlia from that Adam Sandler movie.

It's almost at your two hour mark. I hope you're still feeling well. Did Bob happen to mention if the pretzels are made in the other facility? I know you mentioned rolls and breads. I'm wondering if perhaps he didn't think about the pretzels... Oooohhh... I hope that's not the case. I'd hate to have gotten you sick. Let us know!!!

He did not mention the pretzels--I thought about that later and wished I'd brought them up specificly. He did say that they went over all of the ingredient lists that they use at this facility, and there was no gluten on them at all. He made a special point of saying that as the production guy finished reading them, he said--"all of our snacks are gluten-free".

I'm thinking that quite possibly, the pretzels are made with the breads--the doughs would be made similar, and they would be baked, not fried.

I am happy to report that after eating them yesterday, last night, and today :ph34r: I feel fine! :D

I believe we've actually found the elusive, gluten-free potato chip :lol:

YEA!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy you didn't get sick. I know you're super sensitive. Now, does anyone know if they sell them nationally??? It sure would be great if they did, for the other sensitive celiacs.

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped".       hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood t...

      Thoughts? Non-endoscopic Celiac diagnosis in two year old

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong. yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.
