Dh Iodine Test On My 10 Year Old -yikes!

Holy cow! I tried a dropper of 3% iodine on my daughter's ankle where she once had a strange very itchy poison ivy -like rash before ( presently it has hypopigmentation of very pale white blotches where the blisters once were- never been tested for celiac or DH, mom just has a hunch..). The doctors have taken 16+ years to believe that SOMETHING could actually be wrong with me. So as I am yet patiently awaiting celiac tests as the doctors are on a two week vacation...patience, patience! I thought , ok, well I shall try the iodine on her leg. Oh my #$! Within a minute of putting it on her leg and wiping it dry, she suddenly turned stark white in her face, felt intense stuffy pressure in her ears as if coming up from out of the pool, began to cry, and fell down. Her left over pale white scars which were on various parts of her body turned bright white and appeared everywhere!!! What was moments earlier a giggly little 10 year old was lying on the floor in panic mode. I rushed to wash off the iodine and after a little bit she came back to her senses. I swear it was as if she was going into anaphylactic shock. Scared the daylights out of me. Hmmm...do you all think finally, maybe JUST MAYBE? the doctors will believe me now? I took pictures. I believe she has the DH of celiac and I don't dare test myself with it since I have Stevens Johnson Syndrome which already makes doctors flee. Last time I was in the ER, I thought it was a SJS attack ...now that I see how she felt, I think it was undiagnosed DH for me. The uneducated ER doctor took one look at me in the ER, looked me straight in the eyes, and said, " I can't believe you have ever had SJS, you are too beautiful. You are dismissed. And? Any help YOU may need is not to be had here." he never biopsied my rash or anything. The following day I was so sick. i think all along it was the gluten..we'll see soon, I guess. Has anyone else ever had this reaction to iodine? I know it is an age old way to test for DH. Thanks for listening...Isabella

Wow, that sounds scary! I've never heard of that before. It could show if I have DH (which I suspect I do, but I had an idiot dermatologist who claims I have just eczema). On the other hand, I'd rather not have a reaction like your daughter.

I hope you figure it all out.

Does the iodine test have anything to do with the DH, or is it just an allergic reaction ot the iodine?

That sounds nothing at all like DH. That sounds like a potentially serious allergic reaction.

You need to get it checked out.

Iodine will cause a DH rash in sensitive people. You would put some on your skin cover it with a bandage and watch for the rash. The reaction is not typical and I would not only not do it again I would contact her doctor and have her allergy tested for reactions to the iodine that are more allergic in nature. Although if the skin the iodine was applied to was broken the reaction could have been from pain as the iodine would sting like a son of gun.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
