Mcann's Oatmeal

i know that some of you use mcann's oatmeal without problems. i have found some flavored oatmeal packets made by mcann's. do you you think these would be safe to give my girls? they have eaten mcann's oatmeal out of the box without a problem.

I would call the company to check on the flavorings that were added. Personally I stay away from oatmeal as it is not worth the risk for me.

I have seen research, but I don't remember where, that they tested several batches of oats from different manufacturers, including McCanns, and they did detect gluten, but the amount varied quite a bit from batch to batch. I'd avoid oatmeal entirely just in case. Pity, the McCann's Irish oatmeal was wonderful - one of the things I miss.

wasnt there a company online that sells gluten free oatmeal? I thought I saw a thread about it on here and I cannot find it now.

I would love to know it if anyone has it. Been dying for regular old granola. Thanks

The onling company is www.glutenfreeoats.com. I eat the oatmeal on a regular basis and have had great luck. I had bloodwork done in the spring and it came back good. Keep in mind that some people react to oats.

stephanie, i have the gluten free oats----my girls don't have a problem with them---i was just wanting to buy them some of those fun flavored instant packets-----i guess i could try and make some myself with my gluten free oats----but i would probably have to grind them a litttle in the blender since they are not quick oats.

Mccan's is the onlt oatmeal I eat and I have never had a prbolem with it. I eat both the maple and brown sugar ones and when I went for extra celiac blood work last year after being diagnosed (and I was eating oatmeal every morning at that time) the blood work came back clean.

"Are McCann's Oat products gluten free?

All McCann’s oat products are processed in a dedicated oatmeal mill that handles only oatmeal. In the supply chain between farm and mill, there is a possible cross contamination with other grains, such as wheat and barley but we reckon that the level of non-oat grains to be less than 0.05%. Cleaning equipment within the milling process would remove the vast majority of these grains along with other elements such as stones, straw etc.

But we cannot guarantee that McCann’s oats are totally gluten free and we recommend that consumers use their own judgement as to whether they wish to use our oatmeal or not. Many celiacs can tolerate our oatmeal products without any adverse effect but they may not suit those who are particularly sensitive."

I'm afraid of oats. In my very short (8 month) gluten free experience to date, eating a tortilla made with organic oats and oat fiber made me really sick. To me, it's not worth the risk.

That's just my experience. I don't want to rock the boat, so I stay away from oats.

I've had no issues with the non-flavored McCann's quick-cooking oats in the last six or so months and I eat them nearly every morning. I stay away from other oat and oat-containing products, but these seem to be just fine for me.

      Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

      I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

      Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?
