Mygad, EVERYTHING they say about wine being cheap here (even cheap stuff) is completely true...wine is served like water with dinner; So, needless to say, everything is VERY good with me...not so much my husband, who is a beer drinker and the ale is very pricey here, interestingly. BIG GAPS TO MIND HERE! Ya gotta really watch when you're hurrying off the underground. I smell big insurance claims!...

:):):)

Hi Jess,

I'm real sure u didn't read what I was referring to. It was completely impulsive, and definitely not a test.

I was trying to help you out with a semi-plausible excuse.

LOL no Donna I wasn't referring to your single pkg (probably a measly 6-8oz over days, I think), nor to myself Jess. I don't eat anything w/ even the slightest potential of a downside. [Edit: overstated a bit. I will try small amounts of something I'm 98%+ confident will be ok]

It was someone else, and I may have said too much already.

Welllllllllll ok, I have tested a couple things recently, but only things w/ a very high probability of being fine. And in small amounts.

Like wine. Considering I've been having gluten-free beer (Redbridge of course) for many months, I decided to finally try wine again.

Previously, fermented products were off-limits. For 2+ yrs.

But if beer is ok, why not wine?

I'd been thinking about it for a while, then when at a friend's while they were having dinner, I tried 1/2 a glass.

Seemed like no prob, so ~10 days later I even bought a bottle.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!! I know *nothing* about wine!!!!!! (Hoping maybe Dingy can give me a tip or 2? :):) Ideally, a little knowledge on good bang-for-the-buck strategies would suit me best.)

That went fine too, both in cooking and drinking. So yesterday, I bought more! :D

I think I enjoy wine more now than ever in the past. It'll come in real handy when out somewhere - sure can't expect places to have Redbridge on hand!!

P.S. Hey Donna!!! Still scared about someone tuning-up/fixing your PC for free? <shudder>

LOL ya duly busted!! (I do think I had good reason to migrate a post from OMG, since a part of it could be taken as insulting by some)

Nonetheless!!! I *swear* I tried to think of a joke to throw in at the end, to get in line w/ the purpose of THIS thread. Reminds me of when I used to try to add something *serious* to posts over THERE!!

I've never actually posted a joke here - my attempts at humour are more reactionary. I need something to work w/ and rarely remember 'jokes'. (Oh wait - one time I pasted in to fill a double-post slot)

So FINE!!! :P here's a joke.

A man was driving up a steep, narrow, quite precarious (y muy peligroso) mountain road. A woman approached in the opposite direction. As they passed each other the woman leaned out the window and yelled, "Pig!". The man immediately leaned out his window, shot her the finger and hollered, "B!tch!".

They each continued on their way. Just seconds later, as the man rounded the next bend, he collided w/ a giant hog in the middle of the road, totalling his car. :P

Please Tom, eat some soy!

harrumph

Ahhhhhh Carla . . . . .

That "brain came home" post of yours yesterday on OMG still kinda gives me chills just thinking about it. :):)

I cannot overstate how important I think it is to now not eat any of what I call the "tolerables".

(Curious about whether you had any agave syrup in the few days before writing "brain came home". <arrgh plz don't take that wrong>)

[This is like a practice post hehe

Now I've got to figure out how to word it in the OMG thread w/out potentially offending those who think 3lbs of cookies in 2days isn't detrimental]

Yes, I did have the agave syrup. :) I also had my monthly ice cream. :)

The brain still comes and goes along with the Lyme symptoms. Though I think the effect is the same as yours, the cause is different. I spent a little time in the sun today, just 15 minutes, and it triggered the symptoms ... sunlight stirs things up. Changes in abx (which I'm changing today :() stirs things up, herxing stirs things up. So, my brain has come home, it just seems to like to go out once in a while, just not so far from home. I'm not seeing the progressively getting better like you did ... it comes and goes ... before it was just gone.

I KNOW you're trying to get me to avoid certain foods ... and I AGREE that if I reacted to them when I was sicker that they are still as toxic for me now, it's just that my immune system can deal with them better ... so I do still avoid the foods I shouldn't have.

Okay, now everyone else is like,:blink: What's she talking about???

I'm glad you're coming across as happier even on the phone. :) I remember here, it was Donna who said I sounded like I felt better ... it comes across in writing, talking, everything!

Oh, and don't tell anyone they eat to many cookies. You'll be in so much trouble.

I was trying to help you out with a semi-plausible excuse.

Sorry, you wrote in too late for me to reply! We were out ... I HAD to see the movie about Jane Austen (what a surprise!) ... it was very good. It told where the character Darcy came from ... as Bev already knows, I'm married to my own Mr. Darcy.

Usually, white food = white wine, dark food = red wine. Personally, I don't follow stupid rules like that as I much prefer red wine and drink things like shiraz with fish. :P

I got confused at the intersection of chicken-->white, and red sauce seems like red. Got 2 cabernets to compare and the cheaper one won!

Shiraz? NOW who's making up words!!

(Ok I've heard it said before but don't get how a new type of wine appears. New blend or old one suddenly popular?)

Tell us how dinner went!

Dinner? Well it was my 1st mozzarella in 3 yrs min., so I might rave about it melted over wool. (Or even some untoasted store-bought gluten-free brickbread)

It was a setup <_< , at a friend's house tho he's out of town for baseball broadcast. His wife, Linda & I have same birthday! Linda kinda came and went, and I'd met Karen before a couple times yrs ago. Fun but no chemistry.

Kitties are home!!

The little girl (little only relative to her brother) decided pretty quick that this was gonna be okay and she woke me up every half hour so I could pet her.

This morning the young prince was draped over the back of the sofa. He's still sleeping in the closet, but I think he'll be fine.

From the folks

A man and his wife were celebrating 50 years together. Their

three kids, all very successful, agreed to a Sunday dinner in their

honor.

'Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad,' gushed son number one ... 'Sorry

I'm running late. I had an emergency at the hospital with a patient, you

know how it is, and didn't have time to get you a gift.'

'Not to worry,' said the father. 'The important thing is that

we're all together today.'

Son number two arrived and announced, 'You and Mom look great,

Dad. I just flew in from Los Angeles between depositions and didn't

have

time to shop for you.'

'It's nothing,' said the father, 'We're glad you were able to come.'

Just then the daughter arrived, 'Hello and happy anniversary! I'm

sorry, but my boss is sending me out of town and I was really busy

packing

so I didn't have time to get you anything.'

After they had finished dessert, the father said, 'There's

something your mother and I have wanted to tell you for a long time. You

see, we were very poor. Despite this, we were able to send each of you to

college. Throughout the years your mother and I knew that we loved each

other very much, but we just never found the time to get married.' The

three

children gasped and all said, 'You mean we're bastards?'

'Yep,' said the father. 'And cheap ones too.'

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
    • Scott Adams
I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
