GAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Susie has a terrible - and very mysterious - tummy ache. Quite VIOLENT tummy ache.

I must go into fetal position,

goodbye, my sillies.

LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, Susie. I know you don't like peppermint .... but when that happens to me about 30 drops of peppermint oil (from the health food store, not candy flavoring), helps very quickly. It's almost miraculous.

I wonder if it goes with Kahlua?

Hope you feel better Susie!

Hope you're feeling better tomorrow Susie. I must retire, not because I'm exhausted and need to go to bed, but so that Tom will shutdown his sidekick and enjoy his night out!

Night All!

CarlaB Enthusiast

Yeah, I should go, too .... it's late here .... I'm just procrastinating ... still need to make my smoothie and take my nighttime pills before bed ....

Night all...we are going to watch a movie.

Yeah, the way he talks, I'd think he would have said 10.

Well Har-dee-Har-Har I was, of course, speaking of Susie's YELLING at me in a size=5 FONT!! is there a size=6?

Mmmmmm delectably spicy El Pollo Loco lingering. ... mmmmmmmmmm

Susie check out the crazy chicken lately?

Can barely believe I've got catching up to do again at NIGHT!!!

tom Contributor
We have new neighbours and they seem quite nice but the husband keep calling me Lexie -- ugh!! It's a fine name but it's not MY name. I introduced myself Alex, he asked what it was short for and I told him Alexandria and he took it upon himself to rename me Lexie. I don't know why it bugs me so much!!

Oh jeez this reminds me of a recent couple of PMs I've exchanged lately.

(Just barely, but it did come to mind)

A newbie started a thread and I really only went in there cuz it had been unanswered for a while and I believe it's discouraging for a newb to get no response.

Anyway, the newbie said "celiacs". So after answering the question i toss in "P.S. It's Celiac, not Celiacs".

Which prompts the 1st PM. (From someone who I'd [uhoh . .. . whom?] prefer doesn't read this)

Here are some quotes:

"If you check your spell check, it will tell you that celiac is not a word to begin with and adding an "s" only makes it pural."

---and---

"who makes you the teacher in this forum? Please do not correct everyone all the time, it hurts the forum and it also makes doctors tell their patients to not frequent these forums. Pettiness is a bad thing!!"

Apparently, the ONE time I point out to a first-time poster (hopefully before the incorrect word becomes ingrained) that Celiac has no S, it leads doctors to .. .what????????????

Suddenly my little post affects doctors?

Oh dang . . .. .there was a lot more but I only saved one of the PMs.

Oh I remember that I had a point. I have celiac disease. People who have it should at least know how to say it.

Wrong is wrong. I bet Lexie and Sue agree. (LOL writing just 'sue' feels like I'm referring to someone else!)

Sarah, since he can't wear the wedding ring any longer, you can just buy him a ball and chain ... it's not made of gold and he can wear it over his sock .... it'll match your black shirt.

Yes! They have sport models, and dressier ones....and the new Holiday Model, that I just picked up for my DH, which comes with added sleigh bells...

but OMG - does your husband have some........flesh-eating strep gangrenous finger? slightly troublesome........

ball and chain!!! yes!

Can't wait to hear about your party.....and what you wore.

:o As a matter of fact, last night I googled necrotizing faciitis.... I was relieved to see that it doesn't look like what he's got. Told ya I'm a worrier, YES indeed I considered the flesh-eating virus!!! But no, it's just a very severe form of eczema, with a staph infection thrown in for good measure. In all honesty, it DOES look disgusting and wretchedly painful. He says it doesn't really hurt, but it itches. We are taking extra precautions to avoid spreading the staph.

The party was decent. The people Brian works with are very friendly and laid back. In fact, our table got a little loud and rowdy... B) It was the same place as last year, this big fancy schmancy country club. It's very pretty though, gorgeous Christmas decor. The band was pretty good- they didn't play any Abba or Bee Gees. ;) Although, with a little wine, "Stayin' Alive" can be quite entertaining, especially when the sequined, blue haired little ole ladies jump onto the dance floor.

Now, The Outfit... In the end, I went with brown instead of black. Light brown pants, with my favorite white shirt- clean lines, mandarin collar, Chinese Knot buttons. Darker brown suede jacket, and high heeled boots. I could have gone dressier, but I didn't feel under-dressed. Whew.

Mentioned this thread to a hockey dad who seems very with it, a little insane and artistic, and someone who I was certain would chuckle and remain enthralled with a mention of the yeti, the magic triangle, parades, Care Bear floats, tea-bagging, etc., etc. Well....I was wrong. He just stared at me.

Lose the tea-bagging and you might have a shot.

and can you believe she left the house dressed in that?

I'm so glad YOU said THAT! That very 4 word P.S. of mine prompted multiple PMs, as if I'd been chastising ppl about the "S" 50x a day!!!!!!

Another time, months ago, I PMd a first-timer on something and added that it doesn't have an S, and was THANKED!!

If we don't catch 'em early, they're lost.

Mornin', all you weekend posters!

Um, how old is this brother? and, look, let's just get it out here right now. WHAT are his ish-ooooooooooozzzzzzzzzzz? tell me, I need to know his really annoying bad habits.

Brett is 54. Perhaps too old? Looks terrific....6'1'', quite active (regular hockey, biking, member of gym). Moustache (can be removed)...Y'know, just regular 54 year-old guy stuff. Hilariously funny. As a younger man, I am not kidding, he was always told he looked like Robert Redford. Nasty habits: Hmmmmmmm...he's probably too sensitive. A bit niave. May have some hair on his back (dunno). Used to smoke, hasn't in ten years. Undiagnosed celiac, of that I'm certain.

For a brother, he smells quite decent. Nothin' like he used to smell like at 16 (I was a little kid, but it was still duly noted)...

Peter.................oh PEEEEEEEEEEEEETERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...............

Yes.....Where is our Peter?

I'm sorry . . . I may have missed it . . . Why is it that Sue-Zee has to move to Canada? Can't HE move to California? And does HE have a name. It was probably mentioned, but Lord help me, I'm not going back . . . you can't make me . . . you can't make me

Brett.

Careful, he may have an 'accent'.

{/quote]

:lol::lol::lol: This made me laugh more than anything has for quite a while, for some reason. We all know each other far too well. Tom has remembered my bro's name. This is excellent.

I'm sure he has that Toronto accent. Calls Toronto "Tah-rawn-tah", I believe.

Brett manged and bartended for many years downtown....gotta ask him...

He now has his own headhunting company, recruiting and placing engineers in jobs throughout the T.O. area. Tough to haul up stakes and move, Susie... :(

Ah, but ask Jess....size apparently does NOT matter....

Yes, I read that, too, and was so pleased at Tom's appropriate correction to said newbie. "Celiacs" may make some people crazy, but it drives me right out of my mind. On Monday I shall march into the embassy and plan an advanced lesson on plural forms. When I am done with them, no one will ever pluralize celiac, unless we're discussing a roomful of celiacs...and what to feed them.

OMG I'm coming to Nikki's party too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my bedazzled sweats and hair dragged backwards through a hedgehog.......er, hedge........

I hate it when you get a hedgehog trapped in your hair - damn things are so spikey.

...and BEDAZZLED SWEATS!!!!....Excellent!!! .......we must share tips - you WON'T believe how I jazzed up my Nikes (they would look fab teamed with any ball gown)

And shower them about, like when 1970s Dad would roll that fertilizer-spreader contraption around the yard.

 Indeed!!

Brett.

Careful, he may have an 'accent'.

I am left to ponder the difference (to my untrained ear) the difference between a Canadian to an American accent.

My son #2 has a Canadian teacher

My son #3 has an American teacher

I can conclude that:

1) England has no teachers of their own

2) The American teacher's accent sounds more 'twangey' to me (the Canadian's more subtle)

...any way, back to Emily's brother - an un dx'd coeliac you say??? (has coeliacs but doesn't know it)

Hope Sue ( ) has 2 toilets

I now must announce that I have the most iniquitous (*giggle*) of tasks (I giggle when I'm nervous)

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.
    • knitty kitty
Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.
    • lizzie42
Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
