Hey there Silly Ones

I HAVE been feeling kinda off here & there, but not too bad really. I keep forgetting I can chalk it up to the humaworm - whether it's true or not :P

(No news on that front <back?> btw)

Wish I had an Uncle Ray-worthy/quality joke for ya Bev. Betcher momma would rather you not be sad - but I know there's really no comfort in that, on this day of all days. :( <sniff>

Sarah, hope you're feeling better soon.

I did communicate a bit w/ Susie by carrier pigeon. They can fly remarkably fast on these mild 60deg days. (OMG!!!!!! Fri & Sat are supposed to be 85 here!!!!!:o:D )

Anyway, she said to say she's been "inordinately anxious". I'll throw in that she's also overly occupied w/ parole report deadlines, but will post later.

Heehee  at a Drain w/ a capital D, Amanda <ewwwwww>

(Bah! Gotta look back at what else I meant to comment on)

Yes--glad to hear that Susie's all right.....

Bev! What a BEAUTIFUL pup! I struggle each day to stay off the Petfinder site...There are too many gorgeous, needy dogs that need adopting. DD wants to do her school volunteer hours at the Humane Society, and that could spell trouble for me. I shall be coming home from each session with a pup.... <_<

Happy to hear Susie is ok too.

Judy,

I did! Couldn't resist. Maybe I can get outside for awhile tomorrow. Probably just what I need to snap myself out of this funk I'm in.

That's all it is, is a funk. It's been raining for a week solid. We needed it, BADLY, but too many rainy days, and I really start to get down. I can't help it. It cleared up this evening though...

Ours is just about all gone. The weather has been lovely the last three days, and I have spent much time outside. The barbecue is open for the season, as of Saturday evening. Tomorrow it is going to rain, so it will be an indoor cooked supper. It is not quite mild enough yet to set up the table on the back deck and eat out there.

July 4th in Times Square. Hmm. What an interesting idea. You do know that the Fourth is my birthday, don't you. What a party we would have. :)

Oh, wait, last time I tried to enter the US, Homeland Security stopped me, and sent me over to the suspected terrorist lane. I did get in, but not until after a thorough investigation into the radioactive emissions from by vehicle (actually, from me--dye from a recent medical test). I wonder if they have a file on me. Armed agents approached the vehicle from both sides. I handed them my US passport, but was still put through the wringer.

Or maybe next time I will just breeze through like hundreds of times before.

I have read quickly to date, but may have missed things. Patti, your plumbing seems to be jinxed; either that or you plumber is on a roll.

Glitter and sparkles there--OMG. :D

Yay, I can't wait to plant my Morning Glories! I also have a very nice pink Mandevilla that spent the winter in my dad's basement and I'm hoping I will be able to get it to bloom again this summer.

So here I am angry about having to go get MORE cigarettes. Not angry at myself. Maybe angry at them, interrupting the near-nothing I was doing.

Another step towards being ready to be a <gasp> non-smoker.

We will not be heading up to the Yukon this summer, much to MIL's chagrin. So Ptaum, I will not be walking along, or below, or around, Murphy Ridge....not this summer. :)

Should we plan on 2010? Maybe aught-nine . ..

Instead, we are heading to NEW YORK CITY! This is a place I have dreamed of exploring all my life. Dunno how many days we're talking, but if we can allow ten days or so, we want to head to Washington and probably Philadelphia, as well.

NOW--I can surely arrange to meet up with a couple of Sillies...This will likely be the first week of July. Why don't we all meet on July 4th in Times Square? :):)

WHOA!!!!! I wanna go!!!!

Um, Erica.....Strange things have been known to unfold in the daily goings-on of Sillyville. Have you ever considered the possibility that one, or both, of your parents could very well be a resident here, bantering silliness back and forth with the best of us? Is Janet really a young mother away on holiday, or YOUR dad, pulling back from the thread to avoid your suspicion?

well.... I, for one, have teeth.....

:lol::D

OMG.... :lol::lol:

Just emailed to me......

I was due for an appointment with the gynecologist later in the

week. Early one morning, I received a call from the doctor's

office to tell me that I had been rescheduled for that morning at

9:30 am. I had only just packed everyone off to school, and it was

already around 8:45 am. The trip to his office took about 35 minutes,

so I didn't have any time to spare.

As most women do, I like to take a little extra effort over hygiene

when making such visits, but this time I wasn't going to be able to

make the full effort. So, I rushed upstairs, threw off my pajamas,

wet the washcloth that was sitting next to the sink, and gave myself

a quick wash in 'that area' to make sure I was at least presentable.

I threw the washcloth in the clothes basket, donned some clothes,

hopped in the car and raced to my appointment.

I was in the waiting room for only a few minutes when I was called

in. Knowing the procedure, as I'm sure you do, I hopped up on the

table, looked over at the other side of the room and pretended that I

was in Paris or some other place a million miles away.

I was a little surprised when the doctor said, 'My, we have made

an extra effort this morning, haven't we?'

I didn't respond...

After the appointment, I heaved a sigh of relief and went home.

The rest of the day was normal ... Some shopping, cleaning, cooking,

etc. After school when my 6 year old daughter was playing, she called

out from the bathroom, 'Mommy, where's my washcloth?' I told her to

get another one from the cupboard.

She replied, "No, I need the one that was here by the sink....it had

all my glitter and sparkles saved inside it".

omg ... that is hilarious

In my pre-celiac days I loved Olive Garden. One day after some Christmas Shopping, my father and I went to Olive Garden together. It is 30 minutes from where my family lives. SO on the way home I got the usual cramps and such. When we got home we discovered we were locked out and the spare key was in the house....and I was bursting. I had to climb up the roof and in through a 2nd floor window and down to open the door for my dad and then back to the loo.....it was horrible. I was surprised I did not have an accident from that.

Embarrassed by always being sick, my dad thought I had to pee....so he said I could always go in the garage and go over the drain...I finally broke down and told him why that was not an option....could you imagine! :(

wowwww... poooor poor amanda...

Morning, All!

DH's 47th birthday today....yes, he is that much older than I...... <_<

Going to Red Lobster for dinner, with a gluten-free cake in tow.

We give each other, honestly, THE most romantic gifts. After a great deal of soul searching and pondering, I went to the Empire of Romance, Home Depot, and bought him a beautiful set of wrenches. They simply scream out I love you. Then, not assuaged in my need to express my pounding desire, I headed to Chapters and bought him a big atlas of the world.

I'm tellin' ya, I'd make yer heart go dancing......:lol::lol:

Nikki! Is DS's phone working? I've dropped mine in the toilet (didn't have the hovering form correct, I suspect), and after taking the battery out and leaving it unassembled for a day to dry out, it was fine. HEINOUS teenagers!!

Ptaum--yes, we'll say summer '09. :)

TOO MANY SAD PUPPIES LAST NIGHT! Must stay off those websites......

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.
    • knitty kitty
Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.
    • lizzie42
Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
