Gallstones / Biliary Duct Diffulties?

So . . . . I've had two gallbladder "attacks" in my life . . . back when I was in my early 30's. Nothing sense. Nada.

As many of you know (now that I spilled my guts on a thread I think when I was hacked off at the arguing!), I simply DON'T poop. Not with Zelnorm, peri-colace, fiber, prunes, extra water -- ALL COMBINED. Doesn't happen.

So, my PT (ironic, huh?) has figured out that a big part of the lymphedema that I have is due to the fact that my intestines are so impacted (my brain has forgotten how to tell my intestines how to perform "peristalsis" -- move the stuff through them) that it is impinging my inguinal lymph nodes. So any fluid she GETS up to the nodes can't be absorbed and moved into the lymphatic system.

She started doing this deep peristaltic massage to my intestines. I've done it for my pregnant patients. Works GREAT. Then, one night, I had kind of a sharp pain, not like I remembered before, under my right ribs and around to the back. I was doing the peristaltic massage, and when I got to the area of my liver (where it hurt), I felt and heart this very small "pop" . . . . about 15 minutes later, I had relief! I was thinking, "ALRIGHT!" . . . .

Well, the next day, let's just say "The Color of French's Mustard" -- all day -- and ever since. Even in the impactions.

I went to the doctor, he said that yellow or white stool indicates a lack of bile. He poked around on the area that I told him had hurt (I told him that, even though it wasn't BAD, like I had remembered it, it still was a "sharp" pain vs. dull ache) -- I was able to point out exactly where it hurt and around the side to my back.

His take on this is either 1) I have gallstones (he thinks I may have actually "popped" a stone through to my colon when I was massaging) or 2) I have an adhesion which has formed at the junction where the common biliary duct meets with the pancreatic duct.

It's funny, for the longest time I haven't really wanted to eat because I feel "full" -- and I told the doctor that when he asked me if I was nauseus. When I think about it, maybe that IS the feeling. I feel like I'm so full of sh** (literally AND figuratively) that there's no ROOM for anything else. All I know is that since he went poking around on me, I don't feel so well. I haven't eaten in two days now at all . . . . I still have that "sharp" feeling of pain, but it still isn't AWFUL, but I just don't feel well.

I had bloodwork done in his office the other day, and I'm having an ultrasound done on Tuesday Morning . . .

Can anyone shed any additional light on this for me??

Lynne, somebody started a thread last year to see how many of us had our gallbladder out. And wow, it is VERY common to have gallstones with celiac disease! Even some people in their early thirties (if I remember right) had gallbladder surgery already.

So, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if that is a big part of your problem. Keep us posted.

Hi Lynne

I had my gallbladder out when I was just 23 1/2. didn't no anything about celiacs back then........very interesting ..... When my gallbladder started to bother me I din't have pain on my side but pain directly under or below my breast in the middle. It hurt so much it felt like I was bruised : I barely could touch that spot. I had stones in my bile duct also...... I'm cut from------well lets say I look like a roadmap with all my surgeries....

Now onto your poop part!!!!! I could put a bomb in me & I wouldn't even drop a pebble. What I now have started is milk of mag daily plus some natural stuff on occas.....it works but I must use it daily...now to the gross ???? when you haven't had a bm for many days does your breath smell puky???not like sh-t but odd..I have noticed that on occcas. maybe like old food lying around. Well I guess that is what is going on....

Let us know what your sonogram says.

Are you coming for sure to Columbus????

mamaw -- it's cold comfort to know that someone else has the same problem with regard to the 'no pooping' issue! Sorry about that . . . .

It's just so hard to eat -- it feels like there is absolutely NO ROOM. I think my breath smells puky all the time, but right now -- the taste in my mouth almost makes me want to throw up.

Dave brought me home some rice cakes, since I can't have saltines. I ate a few of them, and I feel LESS painful than I did -- a little. I just don't feel well.

As far as Columbus . . . . SEE YOU THERE, BABES!!!!

I work in a hospital and I can tell you gallbladder disease is not just common with celiacs, it is extremely common the general population. It is the most common surgery done in our hospital. We have had kids 13 and 14 years old have to have their gallbladders out.

Steve

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
