Well Jan. 8th is approaching so quickly, and I'm getting soooo nervous about my appointment in Calgary. I still dont know where I'm staying, and still dont know enough about the bus schedule even tho I got it...like I dont know if its just a straight thru trip, or if its stops in between. I know bus is super expensive, but my parents dont feel like taking a few days off of work either. And this way I could claim it for income tax as a medical expense.

I think I'm gonna cry when I talk to this doc. I know it. I can feel it already building up in me. This is like....my 2nd last hope (the 1st hope is the endoscopy, which I STILL dont know when it is)...

I dont know how not to freak out from nervousness.

Can anyone give me tips on Calgary? :P

Hi Lisa

I can't help with your bus trip but I just wanted to let you know I'll be hoping for a good outcome. I feel it is always better to know exactly what's going on with our bodies than not knowing... For me I can deal with the known but the unknown makes me nervous.....

I'll be thinking of you & praying for a good outcome...

Everytime I eat my pierogi's I think of you..............

Hi Lisa,

Try not to worry. It's always better to know what you are dealing with. Since you are thinking you will become emotional at the doctor's, write down everything that you want to ask, and anything that you think the doctor should know.

I wish you didn't have to go alone--but I know that you will be fine.

I'm having surgery myself on the 3rd and will be off the board for a little while, so if you post about the appointment, and I don't reply, you know why.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and hope that this appointment will bring you some well needed answers.

Take care :)

If your trip on the bus is "Express' or something similar, it will not stop, or make very few. However, if you do not get the express ticket, you can expect it to take the better part 12-14 hours. (normally 6-7 by car from the Jaw)

Hope that helps.

Yeah the bus trip will be like 14 hours, and will cost $125 one way (thats a student discount) ...No price difference if going thru Saskatoon or Regina. But my parents already made it clear they will not drive me, neither will they borrow either of our vehicles to relatives so the relatives can drive me.

All I got worked out so far is that my cousin that lives in Calgary will pick me up from the bus depot and drive me anywhere I need to go and take me to my appointment and everything, so that I dont have to take any taxis. BUT since they are in the middle of renovating their house, they have no space for me to stay. So that dont help too much. I'll keep you guys updated as I figure things out...

And thanks already for your support.

I hope this appointment gets some new information, or new ideas, or new anything for you. I can't believe your parents aren't even driving you. Oh wait..., yes I can. <_< Well, karma has a way of finding everyone, sadly enough.

I agree with making lists. It can help you organize your thoughts too. If you feel weird about it, just tell the doctor you just spent 14 hours on a bus to see him and you didn't want to forget anything.

I'm praying for you that this all goes well for you and you get some new information and a new direction to go in.

Hugs,

Nancy

Hi Lisa,

Have your cousin call around "Motel Village" and see if she can find a decent, reasonably priced place for you to stay. It's probably about 2 -3 km to Foothills from there, but I have NO idea what the bus situation is like around there. Try googling Calgary Transit and see if you can find online maps or schedules.

Good luck, I hope they figure something out.

The busses are no problem I can help with that as I work for Calgary Transit. So the bus outside of the motel village on 16 Ave is the # 91 or # 40 it costs $2.25 to ride it or the ctrain. The train (Somerset Bridlewood will take you to Lions Park (North Hill Mall and you can catch these busses there also.

I finally found out some greyhound info, So I guess ill be leavin Yorkton at 6 pm and get to Calgary at 5:45 am on Monday....and then I can leave Monday night at 7:45 and get back to Yorkton at 1:05 or leave Monday night at 8:45 and get back to Yorkton at 1:20.

I think I'm too nervous already....i'm tired like mad, and its 3 am, and I cant sleep

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

No coincidence. Recent revisions to gluten challenge guidelines call for the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of 3 weeks. If possible, I would extend that two weeks to ensure valid testing.

Thank you both for the replies. I decided to bring back gluten so I can do the blood test. Today is Day #2 of the Challenge. Yesterday I had about 3 slices of whole wheat bread and I woke up with urgent diarrhea this morning. It was orange, sandy and had the distinctive smell that I did not have when I was briefly gluten free. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the brain fog is back and I feel very tired.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
