gluten-free Restaurants In Jacksonville?

Does anyone know of good restaurants in Jacksonville (especially at the beaches) that are gluten free? I know like Outback and Carrabbas but any other good "hidden treasures"? :) I LOVE mexican food, so any of those suggestions would be great too!

I dont but I would also be interested to find out! Let me know if you get any information, I also live on the southside by the beaches and would like to know if any of the restraunts that way are gluten-free.

Wow, and I thought I was the only one from area code 904 here! :rolleyes:

Other than Outback and Carrabba's, Bonefish Grille and PF Chang's (there's a PF Chang's in the St. John's Town Center) both have gluten-free menus. In fact, all four of those restaurants are owned by the same company, I believe. There's a Buca de Beppo near the Avenues mall (consequently, near my house, in Mandarin), and they can provide you with a list of menu items which are (or can be) gluten-free (you can also find different versions of this list on the internet).

Many Publix stores (including the one I work at, on Old St. Augustine) and a few Wal-Mart stores sell Anheuser-Busch's Redbridge beer. The Native Sun grocery store near my house (on San Jose) has an entire aisle dedicated to gluten-free food, too (I assume all of them do).

Oh, by the way, I'm not a celiac. ;)

Tommy's Pizza on Southside Blvd. just added gluten-free pizza and beer to their menu. They were written up in the Times-Union a couple of weeks ago. I haven't tried them yet, but one of my friends has and said it was fantastic. They're just north of Tinsletown on Southside. Edit - their number is 904-565-1999

Is there just a simple listing of restaurants compiled that offer gluten free options in Jacksonville on this site. I go to several places on a regular basis like Bostons, Mellow Mushroom, Ted Montanas as an example, but a list could be helpful. Thanks

Mellow Mushroom has gluten free pizza just off of A1A, 7 blocks north of Beach Blvd. Also European Street Cafe on Beach Blvd in Jacksonville Beach area, can make any sandwich with Udies Gluten Free bread. Both have been sentive to my needs when I told them I was a celiac and could not have wheat. Tony

Are you sure it's Udi's? I was told their bread was made by the local gluten-free bakery, The Cookie Momsters. They also have gluten-free vegan desserts, appetizers, and entrees from Shakti Life. The flax crackers with "cheeze" were surprisingly good.

Other places with gluten-free fare not mentioned - Maggiano's will create any entree for you with gluten-free pasta (or a custom entree), Olive Garden, Longhorn, Boston's (gluten-free pizza), BJ's Brewhouse (gluten-free pizza and beer). Pollo Tropical is fast food and has several choices that are deicious. I've heard Chipotle's has some gluten-free stuff too, but haven't been there.

Do be aware that Bono's barbecue is NOT safe, which was a big surprise. There is gluten in the rub they put on all barbecue except turkey. The turkey is cooked in spots where the other meats have been, so it will be contaminated. Most of the sides are flavored with meat from their grill too.

If y'all know of anything good in the St. Augustine area please post too. My parents live on the island and we go every summer. I know it's about 45 mins. away but I know lots of people go there from Jacksonville.

      The anti-endomysial antibody test is an old test that is generally reported as positive or negative - a lab technician looks down a microscope to check for fluorescence of the sample. It is less sensitive but more specific for coeliac disease than IgA tTG2. Hence, it is not "barely positive" - it is positive. People diagnosed in childhood recover much more quickly than adults.  I would look at testing all 1st degree relatives - parents, siblings.

      What about digestive enzymes that I hear help? I take align 5x probiotics daily.

      thank you RMJ! That is very helpful advice. Good to know we aren’t crazy if we don’t do the endoscopy. We are going to try the gluten free and see how symptoms and levels improve.    thank you Wheatwacked (love the username lol) that is also reassuring. Thankfully she has an amazing and experienced pediatrician. And yesss I forgot to mention the poop! She has the weirdest poop issues.    How long did it take y'all to start seeing improvement in symptoms?

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies.  Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree.  Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant.   That may happen even with endoscopy.  Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end you save the potential trauma of the endoscopy for your baby.   Mine also had really nasty poop.  His doctor started him on Nutramigen Infant because at the time it was the only product that was hypo allergenic and had complete nutrition. The improvement was immediate.

      So her tissue transglutaminase antibody is almost 4x the upper end of the normal range - likely a real result. The other things you can do besides an endoscopy would be: 1.  Genetic testing.  Unfortunately a large proportion of the population has genes permissive for celiac disease, but only a small proportion of those with the genes have it. With family history it is likely she has the genes. 2.  Try a gluten free diet and see if the symptoms go away AND the antibody levels return to normal. (This is what I would do). Endoscopies aren’t always accurate in patients as young as your daughter. Unfortunately, without an endoscopy, some doctor later in her life may question whether she really has celiac disease or not, and you’ll need to be a fierce mama bear to defend the diagnosis! Be sure you have a good written record of her current pediatrician’s diagnosis. Doing a gluten challenge for an endoscopy later in life could cause a very uncomfortable level of symptoms.   Having yourself, your husband and your son tested would be a great idea.
