Cheating

Someone has come up with second hand gluten to replace the term cross contamination. I think it is a wonderful suggestion and has my vote.

Can anyone find an alternative to the world cheating? I hate that word, if we eat gluten we are not cheating on anyone, but ourselves.

I don't know. The only thing I think of when I hear of a celiac intentionally cheating, is self destructive behavior. Or self sabatoging.

That's a tough one.

How about "falling off the wagon?"

How about "masochism"?

This is a tough call.

Cheating just seems so natural since people cheat on other diets, so I guess that is why we use the word cheat with gluten.

Hmm...I like the Side Winder...:)

Making it sound nicer really isn't going to help at all.

Last night on the way back from the station some guy tried to get onto the metro for free by pushing up on some girl going through the turnstyle....

She got all upset (well when his **** is touching her ass I'm not that surprised) ... but apart from that do you want someone who is self evidently a thief to be in close proximity and touching you?

The girl told him to back off and he wouldn't... he insisted he let her through with him... and she argued that she didn't want a thief that close... and the guy gets all angry at being called a thief????

Im not a thief he's shouting, I just don't have a ticket...

You can call it faredogding or we could make up a nice friendly term.... at the end of the day they guy is a thief and should be treated like one.

Anyway the point is Parisians are so used to fare dodging they don't even blink.... even the police just ignore it (there were actually 6 of them watched the whole incident without even moving) and its estimated at any given time 1/3 of the people on the metro are there illegally.

{actually this is OT but .. this is the great part... faredodging is actually encouraged for repeat offenders - the first time you get caught it costs 80 Euro's... 40 to open a "file" and 40 for the fine.... subsequent times they only pay 40??}

So instead of cheating you can say gluten vacation.... obviously its less harmful than cheating because it sounds nicer?

We can go a step further and encourage gluten vacations as well.. we could call the gluten-free diet something that sounds nasty like the flavorless diet or diet for people with no life. And we can go into resto's and look for the menu items marked "suitable for people with no life"

As I think about this, cheating is the best word for cheating. I have never thought it good to put a pretty face on something bad. If you want to cheat yourself of life, that is your decision.

I agree completely....

And in the end the worst type of cheating IMHO is that against yourself....

Yep. Cheating is cheating, no matter how you want to paint it.

Or how about "self-poisoning?"

avenom

An obsolete term meaning: to poison.

I googled "latin poison" trying to come up with a word akin to suicide (which is latin for self killing)

suivenomate seems cumbersome, but avenomate works for me.

To me, cheating is the appropriate word when you are breaking a rule/agreement. To the extent your decision only impacts you (conveniently ignoring the impact on friends and relatives), you can't cheat on yourself. You make decisions. You make choices. You live with the results.

Frequently co-workers make friendly comments about what I "can't" eat. My response is usually "I shouldn't eat it, I choose to anyway". To date that has always been related to diabetes not gluten.

I vote for "falling off the wagon".

Thanks for the thoughts.

I've been thinking quite a bit about this. I don't consider myself a cheat, even though I've done it once while being gluten free. I can never bring myself to cheat in anything in life. Yes I suppose I just wanted a pretty word for it, and didn't want to be considered a cheat, or else I was relating the term to trying to lose weight, where cheating was more or less encouraged and accepted by those who wanted to sabotage my diet. Cheating wasn't really a strong word then, a little bit like falling off the wagon, and knowing you will pick yourself up again and get back on track again, knowing that one day it will happen again. So many excuses. But with gluten free eating, you cannot afford to have that mind set, or have a ton of excuses, even with dieting that mind set is self destructive

Now I am thinking in that respect cheating is not really a hard enough word to describe deliberately eating gluten. I know when I first became aware of being gluten intolerant, I did think along the lines that I had been slowly committing suicide by eating gluten all those years.

Avenom sounds good, and I like what it represents, but I don't know if that would be the word I would choose.

I found this when i located an article that addressed the use of the term "cheating" in relation to a diet.

I thought it was good.

I took bits and pieces, but if you want to read the entire article, then go to the link.

When we feel we are cheating, we often punish ourselves; we make ourselves feel guilty, frustrated and defeated. Replacing the negative concept of "cheating" with the idea of "straying from healthy habits" takes away the all-or-nothing emphasis on right and wrong. If you treat every deviation from your plan as a failure, you won't get very far.

Substituting the idea of a brief straying away from your plan instead of feeling guilty, and learning to return more and more quickly to healthier habits, is more realistic. It's also easier and more enjoyable

If you're having a special diet meal that's different from what the rest of your family or friends are eating, you'll feel as though you're being punished. In order to be successful in changing your eating habits, you must look forward to and enjoy each meal you eat. This doesn't mean that you have to learn to like rice cakes and celery. It means you must learn how to make simple changes in the foods you love.

Many people also enjoy eating out but associate this with being "bad" or eating "illegal" foods. Fortunately, it is very possible to eat a healthy, low-fat meal in a restaurant. You don't need to forego your favorite foods or eat before you go out with friends or family. The same decision-making process occurs whether you eat at home or go out to a restaurant. Many people think that they have two options when eating: eating for taste and pleasure or eating for health. As you learn and practice healthy eating techniques, these two options will become one and the same.

It was about fattening foods and exercise, but I think the information could be applied to gluten free living as well.

Welcome to the forum @Known1, What reaction were you expecting? Pipingrock.com High Potency Vitamin D3, 2000 IU, 250 Quick Release Softgels $6.89 I've have been taking the 10,000 IU for close to 10 years. When I started with vitamin D I worked my way up to 10000 over several weeks.  Even at 8000 I felt no noticeable difference.  Then after a few days at 10000 it hit Whoa, sunshine in a bottle.  celiac disease causes malabsorption of dietary D and you've poor UV access.  It took me from 2015 to 2019 to get my 25(OH)D just to 47 ng/ml.  Another two years to get to 80.  70 to 100 ng/ml is seems to be the body's natural upper homeostasis.  You're Calcium will increase with the vitamin D so don't supplement calcium unless you really need it.  Monitor with PTH  and 25(OH)D tests. Because of your Marsh 3 damage you need to ingest way more than the RDA of any supplement to undo your specific deficiencies. I believe you are in the goiter belt.  Unless you have reason not to, I recommend pipingrock's Liquid Iodine for price and quality.  The RDA is 150 to 1100 mcg.  In Japan the safe upper level is set at 3000 mcg.  Start with one drop 50 mcg to test for adverse response and build up.  I found 600 mcg (12 drops) a day is helping repair my body.  Iodine is necessary to healing.  90% of daily iodine intake is excreted in urine.  A Urine Iodine Concentration (UIC) can tell how much Iodine you got that day.  The thyroid TSH test will not show iodine deficiency unless it is really bad.

I don't know if I am getting sufficient Omega Threes. I read about  phosphotidyl choline may cause heart issues. I will have o do further research on heathy Omega 3 supplements or from foods. Is there a blood test that can tell you everything level in your system such as Thiamine, Benfotiamine levels etc? Thanks

If lectins were my problem, I would react to wheat germ (the highest source of wheat lectins) and beans. I don't. I only react to bread and pasta, which are the highest sources of gluten. Therefore, my issue is wheat-specific (Gluten/ATIs), not a general lectin issue.   I have eaten a supposedly high lectin diet (I say supposedly because lectin content in these foods is greatly reduced by proper cooking and I eat very few of those foods raw, and even then, rarely!!) for years. My health has improved greatly on my whole foods plant forward diet. I have asked all my drs and a registered dietician about my diet, asked if eating such a high amnt of fiber might interfere with the digestion of any other nutrients and the answer has always been NO.     while doing the gluten challenge I did not eat ANY wheat germ (since it doesn't have hardly any gluten, and I was too sick from the bread and pasta to want to eat much anyway) I will NOT put that poison in my body again. That was a horrific experience and if this is what most celiac patients have to deal with, I am very sorry for them I don't care if I have celiac or NCGS I won't intentionally cause myself that much pain and suffering it's not worth it.

@catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten. This explains it well: Lectins, agglutinins, and their roles in autoimmune reactivities https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25599185/

I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!
