Hi again....

Looks like the People Magazine article on celiac disease/ROCK has been bumped AGAIN. Leave it to Paris Hilton to get herself arrested, which they consider "real" news, and a much higher priority than celiac disease!

Seriously, I'm not making this "People Magazine" thing up! :) They really DID do an interview (with other people, too!), and a photo shoot (with real live wardrobe and make-up specialists!) -- they can't allow me to read the article before it's written, so I have NO idea how it will turn out or what it says.

So now it's scheduled to hit shelves Friday, May 25th (the cover date will be June-something -- I've never figured out how those cover dates work).

But don't spend your hard-earned cash till you hear that it really got published -- and let's hope it doesn't get bumped again.

I think She's really brave to let them publish it withOUT her knowing what they wll 'PICK TO QUOTE HER'

There was a NYT article that totally misquoted a woman and she posted a retaction to them and ask them to print it.

Thanks Judy--we've all been wondering what was up! I was just really hoping they didn't change their mind about running it.

I have lunch with one of my friends who works there next week. I'll ask her about it.

I love to read People but now that I am financially challenged, I go to the library rather than buy it. Almost all libraries should carry it since it's so popular. OR, you can go to Borders or Barnes and Noble and read it there in the cafe. I did that once and I felt guilty but I'm pretty sure it's perfectly allowed as I see people all the time reading mags in there.

I was able to look through the magazine before buying and not finding the article, I did not buy it.

this was just posted on the listserv today the 31st of May:

Hi --

The People Magazine article is OUT! It hit shelves today -- it's the one with Lindsay Lohan on the cover.

I've already gotten several e-mails from people asking why I didn't mention this, that, or other things. Please know that I had NO control over the final version of this article (nor the photos they chose -- ugh!).

I did several hours of interviews with the reporter, recommended several experts for her to talk to (she chose the ones she wanted; again, I had no control over who she talked to), and gave her as much background and technical information as I could....but I had no way to influence what she wrote -- so for those who are disappointed that a particular topic wasn't covered, please know that I had no control! In fact, the story changed angles a few times before it was finalized.

It's People Magazine! With a "pass-around" circulation of 38 million, that's GREAT exposure for celiac awareness! YAY!

Around here in the Chicago area, the "new" People issue arrives every week on Friday, sometimes Thursday if we're lucky (at the newstands).

Best article thus far but I was bummed at the angle of the People writer mainly sounding like this is a

childhood problem, even tho they mentioned that adults have it and can take awhile to get dx. But what really bummed me was the mention that it is a "minor problem" to get a little glutening. HA! Let them walk in my pants! The long run IS important for long term complications like cancer etc but I consider the short term equally important......being able to make it to work after a glutening, shoot just being able to make it out the door "safely." Maybe I'll write People Letters for an add on? I guess it bothered me cuz I'm thinking if we go out to eat at a restaurant, a server/cook if having seen that article may not realize the importance of NO CHEATING at all.....ever.

Hope you all are having a great weekend! Angel :P

Wow either you guys are way ahead or we are just way behind for magazine issues....

Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.

I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?
    • trents
Would it be rude to ask your age?
    • pothosqueen
Wow! Thank you @trents I  really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.
