Okay, I just got an email with some fascinating bits of trivial (and I mean trivial) information:

More people are killed worldwide per year by donkeys than by airplane crashes.

You can lead a cow up a flight of stairs, but never down.

And the best, most fascinating one:

A duck's quack does not echo, and no one knows why.

Comments? Can anyone confirm these claims? :):)

Am I missing something?

I had just finished reading this email containing these bizarre facts and I was thinking, "are these really interesting, or funny, or just weird?" I think all three...then I read Jerry's invitation to bring up anything, and these factoids were in my head...so...there it is. Please ignore them if they're just too weird. I find them strangely compelling...but maybe there isn't any more to say about them!

Fortunately, we now have more than my personal experience to offer since an acoustic research experiment was carried out at the University of Salford in Greater Manchester in 2003 to set this legend to rest:

This may sound strange and perhaps I am. I love duck butts. When they are in the water and duck under the water and their butts stick straight up in the air.

Maybe that's way a duck is called a duck

It is really cute when they do that :D

I also like the sound of their quacking. :)

I know my kids love to go look for the docs, we had been going every morning around the small river looking for them. One time we found the mom and dad with 5 little babies, it was so cute. Im hoping to feel better soon to go take them to look again

Wow this thread got more response than any more of my other ones! People must be really tired of hearing whining about bathroom habits :P

Momma Goose, I live in Oregon and am quite familiar with duck butts. I always wonder what could be worth spending vast amounts of time with your butt pointed in the air, but ducks know...

Elye, I watched an episode of "Mythbusters" on the discovery channel where they tried to record the echo of the ducks quack. They didn't have much luck. I think they might have recorded it, but not without much difficulty.

Confused....my mind certainly wanders when I run. Often I run upwards of 8-10 miles and it is really relaxing, that may be hard to believe....Sometimes problems that have been plaguing me for days solve themselves while I'm running, and the answer pops into my head. I run mostly on sidewalks during my daytime runs. The most dangerous part of that is avoiding all the cars turning right without looking and there are a LOT of them. In the evenings I run some of the trails we have round my local area in Oregon. We have a pond with about a mile of trails around it, and then extending for miles and miles into the forest.

There we go, that was post 457

I use to love to run to relax. My neighbor who just lost his wife, he takes a 6 mile walk with the dog every morning, he says its give him the relaxation to make it threw the rest of the day.

Once my health approves i will go back to running, but for now about an mile walk on the bije trails is all i can handle, but of course i always have 2-5 kids with me so a run would be hard lol

Dear confused,

I see you now have like 4-5 new posts in the last few minutes...You must be highly motivated. ;)

We could spend some time talking about my loathing of the corporation in which I'm employed.

I work for one of the countries most successful high tech corporations. I used to feel highly motivated and proud of what I do. As I've gained wisdom, I've begun to understand that I'm just a number on a balance sheet...a liability so to speak. It's gotten so that I can barely stand to hear our executive staff speak, because I see thru all their lies and company propoganda.

I've worked here 28 years. I'm eligible in a few weeks to take early retirement. Although it doesn't make economic sense to actually retire until I'm in my mid 50s (47 in June)....I'm considering leaving anyway, simply because I no longer care for what the company stands for. I could work somewhere else for 1/2 the salary, but perhaps feel better about where I worked.

Should I do it?

confused Community Regular

I would, if you are not happy were you are at then why stay. it isnt fair to you or the company. And if you can get retirement out of it then all the better.

Would you stay in the same field as you are in now, or just completely change career paths.

Im not motivated im just to sick to do anything but post in here and play in pogo lol

I feel so much better now that I can entertain these types of thoughts and it does not bother me.

It is already quite apparent that the only reason I was on ADs was because gluten was gorking me

out. As I phase off of the AD, I actually feel better. Hopefully you will feel better soon.

I would like to completely change career paths. The high tech global workforce is so freakin irritating these days. Companies have spread themselves out globally so that it's much more difficult to get things done. Instead of it being a 9-5 job, it's now a 24x7 job where you might have to call in to

a 3am meeting, because of the geographic location the meeting is being held in. It's maddening.

Then the company wonders why they are not efficient  They actually spend money on consultants trying to figure this stuff out

I'm quite an accomplished digital photographer. I guess taking that to the next level and actually making money from photography, would be my dream job. I thought about being a politician, but my mother taught me not to lie or steal.

Jerry,

My husband has chosen to retire next year at 55 from a job he does not like. He will need to get another job to replace the difference between his pension and his salary. In the long run this is best because he will not be stressed and grumpy. He will be in a different field of employment after he retires.

The question is, can you locate employment with a company and job you like.

Most companies care about their employees to a point but they are profit making entities. I do work I like, work on a daily basis with people I like and bring home a paycheck for doing it. I don't have to deal with the top brass.

It is my opinion that all executives spout company propaganda. I simply ignore it.

My father-in-law took early retirement from the phone company he worked for (also in IT) several years ago. He was able to pay off their house and take a few months off. He ended up working for a company that did short-term computer contracts. He even worked for Lockheed for a couple months. Nothing exciting, just fixing some admin stuff, but my husband and I got a cool T-shirts out of the deal. :)

He ended up taking a job working for my husband in the IT department at a mortgage company.

I think you should take it. You could either do some short-term contract stuff, or go in a whole new direction. Or both. Life's an adventure.

My husband is thinking the same thing lately. He will have 20 yrs in what he is doing now. He will get some retirement if he retires in auguast. But he is unsure what he wants to go into. He is only 40 years old, so he has many options. He is too grumpy working now and it is affecting us all. He is just worrying about getting a new job and insurance, with me and his son being celiac. I always tell him he can retire and i can work but im not well enough to work full time yet.

We use to talk about taking over the farm that we have, but now that I am celiac and so is his son, We can not take over the farm.

Oregan is such an beautiful state, i bet it is easy to take beautiful pics up there.

It is more likely code for “we think there really was a good response to the treatment, but it was small or in a small percent of subjects so it would take a large clinical trial to try to prove it.”

Thank you so much for your replies. Luckily the rash went away when I completely swore off gluten. It took several months but I have not had a flare in months. So a biopsy is no longer possible. The itch was terrible and apart from bleaching my skin the steroid lotions and potions did nothing. The Gliadin is for accidents and shall be a part of my travel kit from now on. This past exposure has made a me a little leery about eating anything that was not cooked in my kitchen or a dedicated gluten-free restaurant. As much as I used to love baked goods, I am cured and have become quite the gluten free baker to the point that friends and family forget that my cakes/cookies/and bread are not "real". I guess I will have to wait for the new blood test to come out to get confirmation but I have a suspicion that the rash was dermatitis herpetiformis.

Hello, I just wanted to share with the frustration of skin issues and seeing dermatologist and medications not working for years, I did my own healing experiment. As of last week I have been taking a drop internally under the tongue of Vetiver and putting on topically on sores Yellow/Pom.I am seeing a extreme difference at a rapid time.Im also noticing my nails a little harder. Ive always been into natural properties because I feel its safer for the body.I know short time, but really seeing a difference. I also feel the the trapped gases that causes bloating helps break down as well.Curious if any body else can benefit from and has tried. Products is made by Doterra by Dr Hill

I agree with @trents, and the rash you described, especially its location and resistance to steroids, sounds highly characteristic of dermatitis herpetiformis, which is the skin manifestation of celiac disease. The severe and prolonged reaction you're describing five days after a small exposure is, while extreme, not unheard of for those with a high sensitivity; the systemic inflammatory response can absolutely last for several days or even weeks, explaining why you still don't feel right. Your plan to avoid a formal gluten challenge is completely understandable given the severity of your reactions, and many choose the same path for their well-being. While experiences with GliadinX (they are a sponsor here) are mixed, some people do report a reduction in the severity of their symptoms when taken with accidental gluten, though it is crucial to remember it is not a cure or a license to eat gluten and its effectiveness can vary from person to person. For now, the absolute best advice is to continue being hyper-vigilant about cross-contamination—buffets are notoriously high-risk, even with good intentions. Connecting with a gastroenterologist and a dermatologist who specialize in celiac disease is essential for navigating diagnosis and management moving forward. Wishing you a swift recovery from this last exposure. If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people. This article may also be helpful as it offers various ways to relieve the itch:
