Am I Old?

OK, this should burn some of my remaining posts until the magic 500

I'll be turning 47 in June. Am I old? If I am old, how come I can still run 10 miles without breathing hard? If I'm not old, how will I know when I am? If you would have told me 20 years ago that

in my later 40s, I'd still be running, I don't know if I'd have believed it...yet here I am.

How do I know when to stop running? If/'when it hurts so bad I can no longer do it? Does it hurt

someone in their 40s..50s or beyond to run?

What do I do when I can no longer run and get that uplifting zap of endorphins?

j

Uh, yeah, you're old ... so am I.

My dad is 70 and had to quit playing racquetball because of his arthritis. He still is a weightlifter and passes for more than 10 years younger than he is.

You will know when you need to stop running.

Lisa Mentor

I can't comment on the running issue. But, most older people that I know talk about their bathroom issues, and you have exhausted that issue!

Yeah, ya look buff and earned some bragging rights. After running, I guess you can take up knitting, I understand that's a rush.

Yeah, but how will I KNOW...is it when the AARP magazine starts coming?

Is it when I can no longer be bothered to run?

No, it's when your legs can't take it anymore...

You're only old if lose the spirit of having fun.

As for the running, I have no idea about that. Didn't know you could be too old to exercise and run. If it were me, I'd take everything at the pace that is comfortable. The body's a complex things. Go with instincts. And obviously don't do anything dangerous.

You are definitely not old, because you are younger than me, and I am not old, so therefore, how could you be old?

Okay, Jerry...Have these things started happening to you?:

You're sitting on a park bench, and a Boy Scout comes up and helps you cross your legs.

In a hostage situation, you are released first.

You're constantly talking about the price of gasoline.

You've worn black socks with sandals.

If not, you're not old yet. But I think my husband is. :)

OK, I've been known to wear white socks with sandals...that's not dorky enough to count right?

I don't talk about the price of gas, but I sure think about it. :)

No sir.

How about this:

I hate rap music...I don't get it.

Body piercings? Whatever for? Why would a pretty girl want to make holes in her face? No need to bother talking about tongue or other piercings..or body modifications....

What's the point of wearing your jeans tightly belted below your buttocks, so you can barely walk? Am I supposed to be impressed that you can afford boxers and pull them up above your navel?

If you are going to wear a baseball cap, why wear it off to the side tilted funny?

If you come to work dressed like a hooker or a gangster, what type of impression are you trying to make on those with the power to promote you?

Yes your music is too loud! Not only does it hurt my ears, I wonder how much damage you are

doing to yours.

Text messaging? Why not just call the person?

No, I don't think jeans on girls look better--so tight that they have "muffin top" and you can see

their butt crack when they bend over.

Crap. That means I'm old too.

I'm still waiting for perms to come back. In fact, I'm getting to the point where I'm so old I kinda don't care if they come back. I'm just sick of this flat hair thing.

You are SO busted! You even made a post here about gas prices!!

Socks with sandals is only okay if you're a granola and are wearing Birkenstocks ... we used to live in a college town and Birkies with socks was okay. No other sandals were okay with socks.

hm, i say, these things don't make you old, just mature. i agree w/ you on most of this, but I say it's just the new generation trends. i don't think you're old until you feel old! you're younger than my parents, and i don't think they're old. my mom just got a boob job, found herself, and got in shape. and i think she looks younger than ever :) just take care of yourself, and keep running as long as you can ;) that's one thing i need to start doing....

See, Jerry, you're old ... when married people say that you're younger than their parents, you're old!:lol::lol:

Sweetfudge, you're right though, I couldn't resist! I am only a few years younger than Jerry, but I feel that I'm "less old" than I was a few years ago, if that makes sense. It's all in the attitude.

As a pretty girl with a hole in her face, I have to say the draw for me to get it was to shock people(that was five years ago) , but the draw to keep it is really that I like to see a sparkly thingy in my nose and it makes me look cute!

Well I don't want to interrupt them, texting is for less important than calling but more important than e-mail.

Get it now you old fogey?

P.S. As far as "physical age"... your younger than me. I don't run, I never did run, I risked failing gym class over the "mile run" that I walked briskly doing. My whole philosphy on running is - Sure skinny people can run, they don't have to move as much as me! If they had to lug around my ass and my boobs, they wouldn't be running either!

Jerry, Jerry....much like the situation when it became common knowledge that Vincent sports a mullet, I am calling for an immediate intervention. NEVER should socks (any colour) be paired with sandals (any kind). Even old men cannot get away with this! Maybe that's why terrorists historically let the old guys out of hijacked planes first--they are in socks and sandals, and are pitied.

Indeed, indeed....but WAIT...have you heard???.....Vincent has had his MULLET CUT!!!!!!! :o

OMG....

This is news. How could I have missed such vital information?! You see, not only can I not make the time to post as much as others, I cannot find the time to simply check in and see what's new. Vincent, great stuff! (I hope Vincent does not wear socks with sandals)...

Adding on to my age...

I want to know when exactly "Rocker Hair" turned into a "mullet"

All the cool guys in high school had rocker hair.

Vincent's went beyond rocker hair though. Looks nice short.

Imemsm, Most of us have experienced discontinued, not currently available or products that suddenly become seasonal.   My biggest fear about relocating from Maryland to Florida 5 years ago, was being able to find gluten-free foods that fit my restricted diet.  I soon found out that the Win Dixie and Publix supper markets actually has 99% of their gluten-free foods tagged, next to the price.  The gluten-free tags opened up a  lot of foods that aren't actually marked gluten-free by the manufacture.  Now I only need to check for my other dietary restrictions.  Where my son lives in New Hartford, New York there's a Hannaford Supermarket that also has a gluten-free tag next to the price tag.  Hopefully you can locate a Supermarket within a reasonable travel distance that you can learn what foods to check out at a Supermarket close to you.  I have dermatitis herpetiformis too and I'm very sensitive to gluten and the three stores I named were very gluten-free friendly.  Good Luck

Okay well the info about TTG-A actually makes a lot of sense and I wish the PA had explained that to me. But yes, I would assume I would have intestinal damage from eating a lot of gluten for 32 years while having all these symptoms. As far as avoiding gluten foods - I was definitely not doing that. Bread, pasta, quesadillas (with flour tortillas) and crackers are my 4 favorite foods and I ate at least one of those things multiple times a day e.g. breakfast with eggs and toast, a cheese quesadilla for lunch, and pasta for dinner, and crackers and cheese as a before bed snack. I'm not even kidding.  I'm not really big on sugar, so I don't really do sweets. I don't have any of those conditions.  I am not sure if I have the genes or not. When the geneticist did my genetic testing for EDS this year, I didn't think to ask for him to request the celiac genes so they didn't test for them, unfortunately.  I guess another expectation I had is  that if gluten was the issue, the gluten-free diet would make me feel better, and I'm 3 months in and that hasn't been the case. I am being very careful and reading every label because I didn't want to screw this up and have to do gluten-free for longer than necessary if I end up not having celiac. I'm literally checking everything, even tea and anything else prepacked like caramel dip. Honestly its making me anxious 😅
    • knitty kitty
So you're saying that you think you should have severe intestinal damage since you've had the symptoms so long?   DGP IgG antibodies are produced in response to a partial gluten molecule.  This is different than what tissue transglutaminase antibodies are  produced in response to.   TTg IgA antibodies are produced in the intestines in response to gluten.  The tTg IgA antibodies attack our own cells because a structural component in our cell membranes resembles a part of gluten.  There's a correlation between the level of intestinal damage with the level of tTg antibodies produced.  You are not producing a high number of tTg IgA antibodies, so your level of tissue damage in your intestines is not very bad.  Be thankful.   There may be reasons why you are not producing a high quantity of tTg IgA antibodies.  Consuming ten grams or more of gluten a day for two weeks to two months before blood tests are done is required to get sufficient antibody production and damage to the intestines.  Some undiagnosed people tend to subconsciously avoid lots of gluten.  Cookies and cakes do not contain as much gluten as artisan breads and thick chewy pizza crust.  Anemia, diabetes and thiamine deficiency can affect IgA antibody production as well.   Do you carry genes for Celiac?  They frequently go along with EDS.
    • rei.b
I was tested for celiac at the same time, so I wasn't taking naltrexone yet. I say that, because I don't. The endoscopy showed some mild inflammation but was inconclusive as to celiac disease. They took several biopsies and that's all that was shown. I was not given a Marsh score.
    • knitty kitty
Food and environmental allergies involve IgE antibodies.  IgE antibodies provoke histamine release from mast cells.   Celiac disease is not always visible to the naked eye during endoscopy.  Much of the damage is microscopic and patchy or out of reach of the scope.  Did they take any biopsies of your small intestine for a pathologist to examine?  Were you given a Marsh score? Why do you say you "don't have intestinal damage to correlate with lifelong undiagnosed celiac disease"?   Just curious.
