My Daughter Was On The News!

My daughter, her cousin and 2 of their friends were interviewed by a local TV station this morning and then featured several times during the day. They are in a national competition that integrates science and community issues and they are finalists. Their idea is to put lights on the (Mt. Rainier) volcano evacuation signs in the valley near us. If they win, they get $25,000 to put their idea to work. They fly to Disney World next month for the competition (and I found a way to go too!).

I just had to brag about them! All four of them were also starters on our basketball team (I was the coach) that tied for first place this season. They have worked so hard at everything they've done this school year and it's so nice to see them rewarded. It's nice to see 13 and 14 year olds in the news for doing something positive, rather than for shooting someone or stealing a car.

COngrats!!!

(though if they do put the lights up, I hope they use light pollution friendly lights and not that glaring crap that is destroying out skies and nocturnal wildlife around the country more and more every day! )

"Way to go!" to all the girls, and "way to go" to all the parents, for raising girls who have found better things to do than hang out at the mall. :)

Oh Liz--that's wonderful!! :D They sound like very well-rounded young women. You have every reason to be proud--and you're right, we don't hear enough about all of the good kids out there.

Congrats to all the girls and their parents!

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!  Sadly, even after several years of very strict gluten avoidance, I remember the symptoms well enough that I am too frightened to risk a gluten challenge— heartbeat and breathing problems are scary— Scott, thank you for the specific information— I will call around in the new year to see if I can find anyone. In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
