Tostitos How Could You!

So since I have been diagnosed, chips and salsa have been my go to snack food. Corn chips are delicious and have always been safe for me. But now Tostitos have have come out with chips made with flour, kind of along the lines of flour tortilla instead of corn but for chips. I think I need to buy a bag, and open them up just to see what they look like, and hope that they differ from the corn chips. For instance at parties, what if someone buys these, sticks them out and they look just like the regular ones I have always loved. I mean I can obviously ask to see the bag, or ask the host, too bad i never had to before. So this is just a warning for everyone, don't grab blindly for those nachos!

LOL I agree, flour Tostitos are the worst idea ever. I kind of yell at the television screen every time I see the commercial for them :ph34r::lol:

I went to a friends house yesterday and they had multigrain corn chips.....grrrrrr!! :angry:

My favorite Tostitos chip had been the Bite Sized Gold, and I was so mad when I saw that they recently have made the flour tortilla chips and they are EXACTLY the same size and shape as the bite size gold chips! I assume that means that they are run on the same macine that makes that size! I no longer feel safe buying my favorite chips. I had to go find a NEW favorite... <_<

Hmmm maybe stick with the Tostitos scoops? Or bite sized rounds? Those would be easy to tell apart. I don't really have a preference in terms of tortilla chips, but recently I have been getting into the blue corn ones--somebody makes a really good Blue Sesame corn chip, and Miguel's brand also makes a great one. But for me Tostitos always had the best balance of salt and crunch! Ahhh just have to be more careful now. I wonder why they did it, probably to promote more whole grains?

i can't believe tostitos did this! i'm so disappointed that now i have to check yet another food item before i eat it...

So have you seen the flour chips? Are they a brown color or noticeably different then the corn chips?

I hope they're made in a separate factory but I doubt it. I usually buy the garden of eatin chips anyway. Hopefully they stay with just corn.

It is a local company in Central California and for the life of me I can't recall the name. I am out right now. I will post the name when I get a new bag. They are thicker and crunchier than regular Tostitos, much like the Bite Sized Gold.

So have you seen the flour chips? Are they a brown color or noticeably different then the corn chips?

I haven't seen an opened bag, but you can see the picture on the bag and they look exactly like the Bite Sized Gold only a light tan colored. The Bite Sized Gold chips are very golden yellow. They are very obvioulsy a flour tortilla chip. I do not think you could mistake them for a corn tortilla chip.

Okay, I bought some more of my "new favorite" chips today. They are Casa Sanchez Thin & Light Tortilla chips. They are really great chips. They remind me of the homemade chips I used to get from the authentic mexican food restaurants years ago. Very tasty, thin, crisp and just the right amount of salt! They hold up well with salsa, guacamole and nachos piled high with everything!

Casa Sanchez is a company that is based out of San Francisco and they are basically only sold in stores in Northern California. I live right in the middle of the grey area where northern and southern CA run together. So some delivery routes consider us northern and some consider us southern...

Anyhow, I am confident that the chips are gluten free. The company ONLY makes corn tortilla chips (corn flour, oil, lime and sea salt), corn tortillas, fresh salsa and guacamole. There is nothing in the factory to contaminate the chips with gluten. They have been a family run company since the 1920's and using the same family recipes the whole time. I do not forsee any recipe changes with this company!! You can buy the chips online and I highly recommend them. They also make a Thick & Crispy chip and this time I bought a bag to try. I'll let you guys know about them when I get to that bag!

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

      You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
