Going To Nutritionist

Our dd was dx'd w/Celiac & we are seeing the Nutritionist tomorrow.

What type of questions should we be asking? All this is very new to us & there is an overwhelming amount of info here! But that's good, I just need to find the time to get through it all!

What is most helpful when seeing a nutritionist?

TIA!

Well the best thing is to brainstorm and come up with questions. The main thing is figuring out what foods your daughter can/will eat and how to make sure she gets the nutrients that she needs. Make up a list of 20 of her favorite food and all of the foods that she won't touch. Also write down her typical meal plan so the nutritionist will get an idea of what to keep, what to modify, and what to overhaul. Finally, figure out how much of what she should be eating to gain/maintain/lose weight.

Good luck!

Don't forget to come back and tell all of us what the nutritionist told you (in case we need to correct her - LOL)

Seriously, post again with what the nutritionist says.

Ask her how many patients she sees with Celiac. Ask her what conferences she has attended to keep up on food labeling laws and Celiac. Ask where you can find good gluten free products in your area. Ask if she has any books or magazines she would recommend.

All of these would give me an idea of how much she truly knows about Celiac. There are many great nutritionists out there, but many of them have outdated and incorrect information on Celiac. So its important to know her level of experience with Celiac.

(Mine told me not to eat certain green veggies. Seriously. Turns out the whole time, she was talking to me about Crohn's. I kept correcting her...and I had know about Celiac for all of three weeks!)

Thank you for all of your advice. I hope that she knows what she's talking about, but I'm not certain yet.

When I called she asked why we needed a nutritionist for a 3yr old, I said b/c of Celiac. She said, "well, does she have diabetes?" Ummm, no.

Sooo, we'll have to see. Right now I have HMO to thank for this referral b/c they wouldn't let me go to the one that our ped GI recommended

I'll take notes & report back so you all can help! I'm so happy to have found this forum!!

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
