As we all know Bette Hagman was an Icon in the Celiac World. She is the reason for so many wonderful breakthroughs in cooking, and baking. Sadly she has passed no doubtedly to heaven for all she's done for this community. In rememberance of her I ask that on friday 08/24/2007, that's this friday, we should all wear something green, or a celiac/gluten free tee-shirt. Lets take a moment and let her passing be silently remembered for what she stood for awareness and a better life for those with Celiac. Please pass this along and ask your friends/family to do the same.

Pi}{ie

If you don't think it is too rude of me to ask, what disease did she die from? I must have missed discussions regarding her on this board. Was she ill a long time, or was this something that came on recently? Thanks for filling me in. Barbara

Barbara,

I don't know--I went to Celiac Central, and there was nothing at all about it.

Hopefully someone will be able to fill us in :)

Bette had a pretty severe stroke a while back and don't think she ever competely recovered from that. Don't know the actual cause of death but she was in her 80s.

I was just reading her books at the health food store yesterday that's sad. Hope she didn't suffer.

Yes, I will wear green, too, then.

I've just bought some of her books, and found out that she lived in my general vicinity! I'm sad to hear she has passed, and will wear green on Friday.

I will definitely be wearing green on Friday. Her "The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread" was my first gluten-free cookbook and her spirit of adventure in the gluten-free kitchen is one that will stay with me, hopefully forever. I have to ask, is the color green from Dr. Peter Green, or the Irish, or something else? I just like to know these things...it really isn't all that important.

TIA,

Margaret

Green is the color for celiac awareness. Just like pink is for breast cancer, yellow for cancer etc. It is used for awareness ribbons, bracelets, t-shirts etc.

I found it and it's on! A quick Google shows that it's from the University of Maryland's Center For Celiac Research.

I love the barefoot imprints on it and also your avatar, that's one long-legged kitty and some beeeyutiful colors.

Keep us posted - I think I'd bring my own contrast with me (not quite sure what that is, but heck, I don't trust too many peeps with my food).

Margaret :)

Remember to wear green tomorrow! I am sending out an email now to try and get friends and family to do the same!

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
