Does anyone get hand spasms, I got them about 2 weeks ago, were my hand would just start to spasm. And now today after i painted some, i had some weird spasms again. I am kinda freaked out. I looked it up on the net and found it could be a vitamin D deficient, which im sure i am cause im casein intolerant. but then it said stuff like the start of MS and parkinsons. which really freaked me out. I really think today was caused from holding the paint brush, but not sure about why it happened 2 weeks ago. So i just wanted to see if anyone else has this problem. Im thinking of getting an vitamin D vitamin and see if it helps. I also didnt know if hand spasms could be being glutened or not.

Hi Paula!

Yes, I get frequent hand spasms, but not sure why. I was just tested, via bloodwork for Celiac Disease and this Friday I have my endoscopy and colonscopy for suspected Crohn's or Colitis. Now I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis, so I just always chalked up my spasming of my hands to the arthritis. My hands are constantly cold, and they often fall asleep as well, especially at night. Once they begin to tingle to fall asleep, I get the spasms. I know they are not just in my head either, as I show my hubby and he can see my fingers twitching! I will ask my GI about on Friday before she knocks me out and see what she says. I am anemic, with very low iron, wonder if that could do it? I will ask her though and see what she says and let you know.

Hi Paula,

Now with the kids gone back to school today (it's the most wonderful time.....of the year!! hear me singing?) I have been sitting here too trying to see if I can find anything about these hand spasms and if there is in fact any relation to Celiac. I will keep searching, but if I find nothing, I will ask my GI dr. on Friday. May not be too coherent on Saturday (meds knock me out twice as bad as most people), but I won't forget you and will reply with what she has to say about this.

DH has severe RLS which also affect his hands -- he has hand spasms at night, too. They have just found that his RLS is caused by extremely low ferritin (iron stores) levels. He will also be having tests for Celiac. He's taking high iron doses but it's not helping.

I think it HAS to be related, either to the celiac or some deficiency due to the celiac, because I also get these - quite often.....

Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

That's great news, you can do this.  Let us know how things go and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. Cristiana 😊
