Something tells me that I'm about to get blasted:

Heck, it won't be the first time! LOL!

It's kinda obvious that I am "rabbit" on there, eh?

I read some of those messages... I hope you don't get pummeled, you're just trying to help, for pete's sake!

It really irritates me when some people have no problem making a sweeping generalization, and stating it as fact. I mean, you're trying to say, the gluten-free diet do-able and safe, and has helped some autistics see improvement.

This guy's coming back at you just saying It doesn't work, it never worked, it never will work, and no dietary change will ever help an autistic. It's pretty obnoxious.

Wow. I think some of those people missed their naptime today. Why can't they just chill out and recognize that it may work for some and not others?

What a load of s**t that the gluten-free diet is unhealthy. Seems like it can be like any other diet - done well it can be very healthful. If one eats nothing but gluten-free cookies all day it wouldn't be healthy - just like the low carb people that think it gives them license to eat bacon all day.

Karen,

Could you PLEASE tell that "Mister" to spell Gluten-free Casein-free correctly???????? It was driving me crazy! He/she keeps typing it as GCFC. And tell him/her that Celiacs don't have to be CF. I figure that if I get on there, they would blast me cuz I would be new and I don't have an autistic child! That "mister" person is crazy imo!

On a side note, I once heard (before I was even diagnosed w/ Celiac) that the longer a child is on gluten (that is autisitc), the more permanent damage is done to that child. So, maybe most of the kids involved in those studies were already past the "point of no return". You may want to see if you can find info on that. And bring up the Jenny McCarthy info! That person needs to quit spouting all those lies that a Gluten-free Casein-free diet is dangerous! That is just crazy. No one technically needs gluten or dairy to survive!

One huge problem with that so-called study is, that it involved way too few kids! No study of that kind has any validity either way unless it involves at least a few hundred, preferably a thousand or more people.

And of course, there could have been tons of false negative in both the bloodwork and the biopsies. Unless they tried the diet with those children and monitored the responses to it, this study is just another piece of crap. And anybody who quotes it as 'evidence' that autistic children have no more problems with gluten than non-autistic kids shows woeful ignorance on the subject.

Besides, anybody who actually claims that putting any person (including autistic kids) on the gluten-free diet could threaten their health and put them at grave risk is an idiot. Good grief!

I agree--and it's very narrow-minded, in my opinion. <_<

Well, they ended up winning anyway. I got kicked off. Oh well, my bad!

Hey, it feels so invigorating to be a maverick! LOL!

I have to believe that by taking that abuse, I have at least swayed one parent into choosing the path that will change their child's life. I will hold onto that.......

I'm sure that you got through to many--and at least made them think about the possibility. You did your best :)

I'm sorry you got roughed up.

I find it odd that people are so dismissive, particularly if there's a chance diet could help. What does it hurt to try every avenue if your child's future hangs in the balance?

I believe that a reaction to Mercury could have something to do with Celiacs in some people, if not other auto immune issues, and I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't a part of the Autism puzzle too. I wonder if people realize how prevalent Mercury sensitivity is? I found out the hard way when I started wearing contact lenses way back when and the solutions were all preserved with thimerosal. Try and find lens solutions these days with thimerosal in them. They've all been phased out because the sensitivity problem was so wide spread. Who's to say that exposure didn't set off Celiac Disease in me in the first place? I mean seriously, how natural is it for the human body to be absorbing the amounts of Mercury modern life throws at us?

I don't get who it hurts to be open minded at least.

That's all I was hoping for - to convince parents to keep their minds and options open. We all know how devastated a person can be when they get a diagnosis, irregardless of what the disease is, whether it be celiac disease or autism. When you are in that frame of mind, you could be so easily swayed into the wrong direction by people who are so forceful in pushing their points of view on other people.

I was trying to make sure these parents made their OWN decisions, instead of being bullied into thinking the gluten-free/CF diet was a "fraud" diet, as they so eloquently put it!

Why did you get kicked off??? I mean what justification was there!?

Not sure - I kept on trying to reply to posts and also tried to start a new thread, both times I didn't even have a "live" cursor in the boxes, no matter how many times I clicked on it.

Update: Perhaps I was reported, but when the moderator read through the whole conversation, re-instated me because I am now allowed to post again!

Karen -

Don't know whether you read the thread from lonewolf (Liz) recently, who had a passing conversation with another parent. After trying the gluten free diet, at Liz's suggestion, the son now appears to be in remission from a kidney disorder.

It just takes one person to touch a shoulder of another to change a life. So keep it up! :D

Karen, this could be as simple as a problem with your browser. Completely closing it (exiting all windows and tabs) and restarting it has resolved similar problems for me from time to time--no cursor, or keys generating the wrong character (usually special characters). I use Mozilla Firefox, currently 2.0.0.7, but I have seen this problem on rare occasions, and it is not specific to 2.0.0.7. I have been using it since April of 2005 at level 1.0.3 and have used just about every version in between. I think this hiccup has only happened since switching to version 2.

And I certainly agree with the others that "Mr Me" is a total @$$h01e. However, I would point out that there are some people who experience harm from the Gluten-free Casein-free diet: wheat and dairy farmers.

Some people just HAVE to be right, even when they are wrong. :o

In response to your questions regarding probiotics.  I have had Celiac for 40 years.  Stomach issues: digestion, IBS to chronic constipation, bloat after eating anything.  I was unable to eat a healthy variety of foods, tried probiotics supplements - some made me worse, others made no difference.  After reading about people with Crones, IBS, etc, who made their own probiotics I started making Milk Kefir: not water Kefir. There are 10 probiotics in milk KEFIR. After 3 weeks I was able to eat more, no gas, no IBS.  If you have a computer just ask for videos on making milk Kefir. I branched out and make my own Kombucha for even more probiotics. I do not make my yogurt because there are only about four probiotics in that. I started this when I was 82 and I still make my own Kefir and Kombucha. My stomach issues were fixed with the Milk Kefir alone. If you decide to try making it, make certain you order MILK GRAINS. The finished product tastes a bit like Buttermilk. I hope this helps in your journey to good health.

Help me out here. Lauren Dam gluten-free beer from Spain is listed as gluten free. Yet its made from Barley Malt. I thought barley and any form had gluten. Anybody have any more information about it?

Ferritin levels.  And see what your hemoglobin looks like too, that will tell you if you are anemic?  You can have 'low normal' levels that will not be flagged by blood tests.  I had 'low normal' levels, my lab reading was. c12, just over what was considered normal, but I had small benign lesion on my tongue, and sometimes a sore mouth, and a consultant maxillofacial ordered an iron infusion for me as he felt my levels were too low and if he  raised them to 40, it would help.   Because you are not feeling 100% it might be worth looking at your levels, then discussing with your doctor if they are low normal.  But I stress, don't supplement iron without your levels being monitored, too much is dangerous.

Hi Katht -  I sympathize with your struggles in following a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. I found out that I had Celiac Disease a few months before I turned 70. I just turned 89 and it has taken me almost 20 years to attain a fairly normal intestinal  function. I also lost a lot of weight, down to 100 lb. down from about 140 lb. What Trents wrote you was very true for me. I am still elimination foods from my diet. One person suggested you keep a food diary and that is a good idea but it is probably best just to do an elimination diet. There are several ne and maybe one for celiacs. I used one for a while and started with plain rice and zucchini and then added back other foods to see if I reacted or not. That helped a great deal but what I did not realise that it would only very small amounts of some foods to cause inflammation in my intestine. Within the last few years I have stopped eating any trace amounts of hot peppers, corn and soy(mostly in supplements) and nuts, (the corn in Tylenol was giving me stomach aches and the nuts were causing foot pains). Starting an elimination diet with white rice is better than brown rice that has some natural toxins. In addition it is very important to drink sufficient plain water. You can find out how much to drink for your height and weight online. I do have difficulty drinking 48 ounces of water but just recently have found an electrolyte supplement that helps me stay well hydrated, Adding the water and electrolytes may reduce muscle cramps and gag spams you wrote about. . Also buy some anti-gluten enzyme capsules to take with meals. I use GliadinX advertised here. These are a lot of things to do at one time as they reflect my 20 years of experience. I hope you do what you can manage to do over time. Good luck and take care.
