OK, I need your help. Does anyone know if there is gluten in Immunotherapy-Sublingual Therapy?(which are Allergy shots) I have tried asking my Allergist and I get no where. I have been gluten free since Feb. this year and I have now been soy and casein free since last month and I just keep getting worse. I have a gluten free kitchen, I use all gluten free personal items, I do not eat out as I am concerned about every thing I eat or put on my body. Please if anyone has any idea's please let me know. I don't trust Doctor's any more as I found them to be idiots. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I can't say specifically about the kind you are receiving, but I asked my allergy nurse what was in the allergy shots I was receiving and she said it was in a saline only solution...but I'd take that with a grain of salt, lol.

You could ask the nurse for the name of the drug and the manufacturer and call yourself.

If you are receiving allergy shots, there is no need to worry at all. Allergy shots are just concentrated forms of what you are allergic to so there should be no fillers or additives to them. I getting shots for 10 years now with no problems.

Also, you have to ingest gluten through the GI tract to cause a reaction so unless you are swallowing anything, you should be fine.

You might check out the OMG thread on this board, where other causes of gluten intolerance are discussed in great detail, including Lyme disease, yeast infections, and mercury poisoning.

I was wondering, if allergy shots come from a multi-use vial, is it possible that they are preserved with thimerosal???? Thimerosal is gluten-free, but it is 50% mercury, a known neurotoxin, and if you have any kind of leaky gut condition, it will cause major problems for you....

HOpe you are able to find answers soon!

Yes, I'd also welcome you to the OMG thread, just jump in, as it is way too long to read it all!

If you haven't had improvement and keep getting worse, this is a real concern. How were you diagnosed? It's not clear from your post what symptoms that you have that are getting worse. Did you have any positive dietary response when you went off those foods?

I have lyme disease in addition to probably being a celiac. It makes figuring things out very complex.

Others here have other issues too, like additional sensitivities. The low oxylate thread is an example. Also nightshades.

Are you having injections or sublingual (drops under the tongue) therapy? Any injections should be safe but sublingual drops are another story. As mentioned you should check with the maker, if your doctor will not give you the name and/or phone number drop the doctor. This may sound extreme but have you thought of dropping the allergy therapy for a time? I had standard allergy testing by an MD right before diagnosis. I showed up allergic to almost 100 substances, everything tested for except beech trees caused a reaction. Within 6 months gluten free those allergies were gone, they were caused according to my doctor by my immune system being in overdrive due to the celiac. He would NOT give me anything for them, no allergy therapy of any kind because he felt the tests were a 'false positive' because of the immune system issues from celiac. I am wondering if your allergies have the same root cause. The surest way to know for sure that the sublinguals are a problems is to stop them for a month or two and then if needed restart the therapy, that will make it clear if the sublingual therapy is causing problems. Many doctors are not at all familiar with the autoimmune response that comes with celiac and falsely think that a small amount of casien, soy or gluten will not harm us. I became severely ill when a naturopathic doctor prescribed stuff with this mindset.

I know that this is the specific reason I asked about my shots...I was mostly concerned about the thimerosal issue. In my case they said it was only saline, but I don't have a lot of confidence in what they tell me there, lol.

Yes, after 3 years of allergy shots and not seeing improvement until after I went gluten free (but continuing the shots for 2 more years) I am testing this now. My doctor finally agreed that a trial period without the shots would be a good idea. It was coming down to where I was only reacting when I got the shots, so it appears that my "allergies" were caused by one of my other conditions and now that those conditions are being addressed my body is able to do what it is supposed to.

Oh wow, you have all been very helpful. Now I wish my Doctors could do the same. In answer to the question about what my symptoms are, here goes. I was diagnosed just this last February with DH after years of suffering. They found this out after 4 skin biopsy's and then they did blood work to confirm Celiac. I went gluten free that day and was improving. Now since the shots I have been breaking out again and having gut problems and I have not been getting gluten in anything. I also have been having major problems all over but my doctors don't seem to think any of it is related to the celiac. I have been suffering severe headaches for years and I have had 3 sinus surgeries which have not helped. I also have Hasimotos-thyroiditis and had my thyroid removed 5 years ago. I have glaucoma, partial hearing loss which is getting worse, scoliosis, osteoarthritis, enlarged liver, diverticulitis and I had my first seizure just this last October 2nd. I had a complete hysterectomy 4 years ago and they also removed my appendix. I do have allergies but not that bad but my ENT wanted me to have these shots to see if it would help me from growing polyps in my sinuses. I am a 48 year old mother of 4 wonderful adult children and grandmother of 3 beautiful grandsons. I have always been very active and have always felt like a teenager myself but now I feel like such an old lady. I have no energy and I eat very little because when I do eat I get so sick but I am gaing weight rapidly. My blood sugar has been running high and I have diabetes in my family really bad but my doctors don't think its anything to worry about. I live in Northern California and and my options of doctors are limited. I have asked to be refered to someone down south but they keep putting me off and every doctor I contact want a referal from my doctor and I just keep going in circles. Now I have to add one more problem to my plate which is DEPRESSION. Thanks for listening and thanks again for all your comments.

I really hope you give the diet a try. You sound like so many of us.

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Welcome @JoJo0611. That is a valid question.  Unfortunately the short answer is slim to none.  Be proactive, when the diagnosis process is completed, start GFD.  Remember also that the western diet is deficient in many nutrients that governments require fortification.  Read the side of a breakfast cereal box. Anti-tTG antibodies has superseded older serological tests It has a strong sensitivity (99%) and specificity (>90%) for identifying celiac disease. A list of symptoms linked to Celiac is below.  No one seems to be tracking it, but I suspect that those with elevated ttg, but not diagnosed with Celiac Disease, are diagnosed with celiac disease many years later or just die, misdiagnosed.  Wheat has a very significant role in our economy and society.  And it is addictive.  Anti-tTG antibodies can be elevated without gluten intake in cases of other autoimmune diseases, certain infections, and inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. Transient increases have been observed during infections such as Epstein-Barr virus. Some autoimmune disorders including hepatitis and biliary cirrhosis, gall bladder disease. Then, at 65 they are told you have Ciliac Disease. Milk protein has been connected to elevated levels.   Except for Ireland and New Zealand where almost all dairy cows are grass fed, commercial diaries feed cows TMR Total Mixed Rations which include hay, silage, grains and concentrate, protein supplements, vitamins and minerals, byproducts and feed additives. Up to 80% of their diet is food that cannot be eaten by humans. Byproducts of cotton seeds, citrus pulp, brewer’s grains (wheat and barley, rye, malt, candy waste, bakery waste. The wheat, barley and rye become molecules in the milk protein and can trigger tTg Iga in persons suseptible to Celiac. I can drink Grass fed milk, it tastes better, like the milk the milkman delivered in the 50's.  If I drink commercial or Organic milk at bedtime I wake with indigestion.

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/
