Quick Recovery Tips

I admit it...I willingly ate a bowl of cereal in a moment of weakness, last night, and I am now suffering the consequences. Tomorrow will be worse I'm sure...Can anyone provide me any tips that work for them to alleviate the symptoms that occur after consuming gluten? I know that avoiding wheat is the only way to avoid the consequences, but like an alcoholic with a hangover, I find myself in the same place...holding my tummy saying, "why did I do that?"

Thanks in advance.

Tina :)

I've been there! I don't know how to make the glutening feel better--seems to be a matter of time thing. But, my secret to not needing those foods I should avoid is to have even better alternatives in the house and to try to never let myself get so hungry that I don't care what I eat.

I hope you feel better soon!

I've heard that Pepto-Bismal helps some people, but it does not help me unfortunately.

Believe me, I feel your pain.

Staying hydrated is important -- getting dehydrated will definitely make you feel worse. I get a killer headache if I don't replenish all of the fluids being lost. Pedialyte is great for that. I highly recommend keeping some on hand at all times, so you have it when you need it.

some people say red bull helps, i havent tried it cause i dont drink caffeine, i am araid to see what would happen to me on a red bull. What i do is sleep with an heating pad, that makes me feel better and stay hydrated and i pop tyenol so i dont get an headache.

I also keep certain foods on stock in case of weak moments which I do suffer from. I have things like candy and Dora Stars cereal, ice cream.

As for the glutening...maybe some Immodium if you are suffering from the "D" maybe take a relaxing hot bath. Get some rest.

Hang in there, it will pass, and this one time might help you be stronger for the next urge for gluten. We have all been there, so we know how you feel. :)

Thanks for all your feedback! One thing that makes the recovery hard for me is once I gave in to the temptation, the cravings return for all the bad stuff...it really is a vicious cycle. It is so weird how something so bad for my body, mind, and soul can be so attractive to me at times...that I'm willing to sacrifice my well being for a stupid peice of bread, pizza, etc. It just about makes me crazy. The reality I must come to grips with is I can NEVER EVER have it again.

Since you obviously have at least 1 gluten eater in your house it may sound funny but a note to yourself on "their cupboard" saying something like "if you eat it you will be sorry!" or " do you have time to be sick for the next week or do you have plans" and my personal favorite "a moment on the lips... a week in the john" may help you to take a moment and think before you "ingulge" I find if I take just a moment to think about what I am about to do prevents me from doing it.

But I also agree with keeping a few "quickie" somethings around for those emergency times.

As for my "feel better" remedies..... I dont have any I just suffer thru it all week

For remedies, I swear by mint tea and/or lemon balm tea. (Lemon balm is a relative of mint.) Tastes good, helps the queasy stomach and feels comforting.

I don't take immodium unless I am traveling or have a business engagement that I can't miss. I figure my body is trying to get rid of poison for a reason and I don't want to keep it in my body any longer than necessary or slow it down in any way.

Hope you feel better soon.

To get it through you fast, brew a pot of coffee and drink 20 oz and then 40 oz of water. Then repeat 3 hours later. You will be strung out on caffeine, bloated, and your butt will hurt, but it will be over faster. Then, to help your stomach recover, only eat bananas, applesauce, and rice for 24 hours. They are easy in and and easy out (sorry!).

Good luck!

I am SO going to try the coffee water thing tomorrow....:) Thanks again!

My daughter was glutened. We think it was in chocolate fudge, maybe imitation vanilla, hard to tell at this point. I looked up BRAT diet, like you said: banana, applesauce, rice and tea. It is so hard to get someone to eat just that for 24 hours and drink alot of water. Today she is not feeling well but went to work. I am sure she brought a banana and some yogurt for lunch. I do not have Celiac but I feel her pains everytime she has them. Reading all these posts saddens me, I am so sorry you all have these problems like my daughter does. I wish Santa would take them away.

Stay strong and have a Merry Christmas. If anyone has another quick remedy other than BRAT diet please share :-)

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
