if you do try eating 'bland' with the BRAT diet (banana, rice, applesauce, toast?), and don't feel better, consider those things are all relatively high on the glycemic index. Also, fruit is best eaten alone.

Of course they say bananas have some quality that firm up the outflow or soften it, depending on what you need - so you might consider that.

Also, some things can cause diarrhea, like supplements (I had my sister taking Triphala, an Indian herb, w/o realizing it was laxative), and Mate (a south American tea) can cause a bit of the old loosening as well. Also, can't too much magnesium cause it. I'd watch for those things as well.

I wanted to add that hyper (fast) thyroid, IBS and pancreatic insufficiency are other issues which can give a person diarrhea...

There have been lots of good ideas here. What came to mind for me was 1) you need a longer time to heal 2) high fat content of the cookies 3) high soy content in the cookies unless you made them with butter, as shortening and margarines are usually soy based 4) allergy to gluten free items like cornstarch, xanthan gum, tapicoa, potato

Enterolab uses fat malabsorption to show how much damage is present in the intestine...so I think if you don't handle high fat this would be congruent with celiac and the early healing process. Of course a few other conditions cause this as well (gall bladder problems for example)

It is also possible that you could have something else going on, such as a parasite infection. I think of it this way, that celiac compromises our systems so we are more susceptible to many things. A few people here on the board have discovered lyme disease and heavy metal toxicity to be a major cause of their GI tract problems.

Hi Joe,

I am new here as of today. I went gluten-free right after Thanksgiving this year. Anyway, I have been lactose intolerant for 10 years or so. I've found that when I had issues with dairy, bloating, the trots, that fun stuff, that if I ate sugary foods it would intensify the problems. it makes sense really. Lactose is a sugar, and when you can't digest it the bacteria in your intestines multiply like rabbits. They like sugar. Love it in fact. That causes the diahrea and gas. So then if you throw in some more sugar, such as candy or anything with lots of sugar, it adds fuel to the fire so to speak. More sugar, just what the legions of rabbity bacteria need to go crazy again.

If you are trying to avoid dairy, watch out for foods that list whey or casein also. There are foods that have casein or whey but don't say they have milk. Some you might not think of are processed meat products, like some sausages. I usually buy lactaid 3 bottles at a time, although I try to avoid dairy for the most part. Brands I like are Solgar and Vitamin Shoppe. I usually take more than the bottle reccomends, and it also helps me to take a few more a couple hours after the first round of pills. Best thing is to just avoid dairy completely, but that isn't always easy.

My symptoms have improved bunches since I went gluten-free. I hope your's do too. I still can't do dairy though, maybe in a few months. Meanwhile I am learning to eat gluten-free and its not so bad. Rice cakes with peanut butter are ok. And I found a recipee for something called Okra Fry Bread that's ok too, just use gluten-free flour with it. Whole Foods has gluten-free foods and bread. For me the improvements make the change in diet very worthwhile.

      I'm not saying that some celiacs won't need it, but it should be done under a doctor's supervision because it can cause lots of problems in some people.

      I also noticed I get debilitating migraines when I smell gluten, wheat and its not taken seriously when it affects one in every way.Im still begging to properly be heard.I also noticed tolerance level is down the drain with age and life changes. I have been told by incompetent medical that im not celiac or that sensitive. Diagnosed in 1994 by gi biopsy gluten-free ever since along with other lovely food allergies. Prayers

      trents:  Why some can tolerate european bread but not american bread.     I take 600 mcg a day.  Right in the middle of the safe range.   Groups at Risk of Iodine Inadequacy Though though the NIH does not specifically list Celiac Disease in this group, they state: "Iodide is quickly and almost completely absorbed in the stomach and duodenum. Iodate is reduced in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed as iodide [2,5]."  That would certainly include malabsorption of Iodine due to Celiac Disease with resultant Iodine Deficiency.       Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?
