Hair Loss - How Long Does It Take To Improve

Help. I need to hear some positives. I have been losing hair for several months and was just recently diagnosed.

I would like to know how long it takes to get my thick hair back to normal. Some one suggested biotin and I started that vitamin replacement today.

Any other ideas?

Pre diagnosis my hair stylist asked me if thinning hair ran in my family. I was thinning badly near my part and would have gobs of hair falling out regularly. I shed more than my cats, for a woman that is a big big deal. After diagnosis my doctor worked with me to bring my vitamin and mineral deficiencies back to normal and I started to feel much better. I asked about my hair and thinning/breaking nails and he also recommended the biotin it worked great and in about 8 months I saw tremendous improvement. now two years later I have thicker hair than i have ever had.

Good Luck

Barbara A,

I had horrible hair loss that got worse after going gluten free. It came out all along my hair line. :( Only in the last 3 weeks have I noticed it stopped. What used to come out in my brush in a month would come out in a day! It was about my 4th month of being gluten free that it slowed down and then stopped. Who knows why. <_< I do know that only washing it every other day helps. And my Dr. actually told me not to waste my money of expensive shampoos-it is a waste. Hang in there it really does get better!!

I said Biotin... I notied IMMEDIATELY with my nails, your hair depends on how fast it grows. 3-4 weeks you should see new baby hairs popping up all over your scalp.

Just keep on it and don't give up!

Yes, absolutely biotin works. I take Biotin 2500mcg (GNC gluten free) once a day and I have noticed a huge difference for the better. My hair was falling out due to malabsorption combined with low iron and thyroid. I started taking biotin faithfully about two months ago and my hair is finally starting to look like it used to. The biotin has also been great for my nails which were breaking constantly. My thyroid meds are still being reduced since I've been on gluten free diet and that has helped the hair loss. It's scary and depressing, but it will be ok.

My hairdresser told me that hair will often fall out in larger than normal quantities for up to 12 weeks following a serious illness, shock, or surgery. My excessive hair loss stopped in about that timeframe after going gluten-free. It would make sense that once your gut starts to heal and absorb more nutrients, your hair would become more healthy as a result.

I did some reading after the biotin was suggested by sickchick and it says that biotin comes from the mucosal lining and it's created by the good bacteria. I know my mucosal lining is messed up. I can't wait to get mine. I'm going with the 5000 mcg! Yippee!

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
