Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Are prolonged periods or bleeding between periods ever associated with celiac disease? I am bleeding 2-3 weeks a month.

(Don't worry, I am seeing a gynecologist about this and undergoing tests. She just hasn't found anything wrong at this point.)

I was just wondering.

Thanks.

How old are you? Have they tested your iron and ferritin? Are you taking any herbs or supplements other than a multi/vit? Added a lot of soy lately?

I am 44, they tested iron with a fingerstick-don't know what test that was called. It was good (12? I think)

No herbs, not a big soy fan, so unless it is in something I don't know about....I'll check my cereal.

This is possibly perimenopause going on- but seems a little excessive to me, has been going on since June. They have ruled out endometriosis, polyps. Have one fibroid but they don't think that is the problem due to size and location.

Who knows.

Just a shot in the dark if it was some wierd symptom of celiac disease I didn't know about (since my mom is and some of the symptoms match for me.) I am at a loss and it is really a drag.

dj, have you had your thyroid checked? I associate abnormal bleeding more with thyroid issues than celiac.

There can be many reasons as to why you have prolonged periods and bleeding every 2-3 wks. For instance, are you taking alot of asprin, or medication that has asprin or asprin product in it? When you mention 2-3 weeks a month are they full periods or is it blood when you wipe. Sorry to sound graphic. Sometimes people can have little hemorrhoids that can bleed while having a bowel movement. They usually don't know they have them and they can bleed with this. You mentioned that you are 44, have you had a hystoscopy(very non-invasive done in office of gyn) of your uterus to see if you have alot of "fluff" in your endometrium. This usually is a problem with our age, we tend to have "fluff" and the blood during our periods sits in the fluff and sometimes we get a full period and then we have spotting which sometimes is brown and other times tinged red and pink.

I am glad that you are going to your GYN, but I would ask for a full panel for your blood work. ie: thyroid, iron, b12 etc. Finger sticks aren't always (and I say, aren't always, before someone sends me a bad email) accurate. They really can't do alot of blood tests from a drop of blood. There are many possible reasons, some as simple as a little polyp (not a cancer) on your cervix that is there and they need to look visually to see it, and that little polyp can cause alot of havoc on someone with all this break through bleeding. Also, if you are peri-menopausal I hear that it gets worse before it gets better, meaning irregular periods. But maybe someone who is a verteran of menopause can clue you in to that.

Good luck and I hope everything turns out good for you. Be cautious as to what you look up on the internet regarding symptoms they can scare they heck out of you.

Hi djmom! I do not have a confirmed diagnosis of celiac but went gluten free in March.. I had hoped that one of the problems I was experiencing - abnormal periods would go away along with the rest of my symptoms.. but has not, it is the only nagging problem I have at the moment.. My periods went from 3-5 days to 7-10 days.. then spotting everyday from one period to the next.. Birth control pills made it worse. I got one shot of Depro and said no to the follow up shots.. did not like the side effects.

I had 2 pelvic ultra sounds and a endrometrial biopsy.. all negative.. cannot find a cause. It is just a mystery.

Since I do not plan to have anymore children they are going to do an ablation .. remove the lining of the uterus. The surgery is Friday. I will be glad to get it done and over with..

Good possibility at my age with this procedure to never have a period again! :D

Darci,

My husband says I have "wished this" so I don't have to have sex! <_<

Good luck on your procedure. At this point, although that sounds scary, anything sounds good to me, including hysterectomy. I am sick of it!

Again, hope it goes well.

Susan

Hi Darci, I had two of these done. It was the best thing I ever did. The first one lasted a year and then I had another 1/2 years later and I am lucky if I get my period every 5wks. And when it does come it last 3 days if that and very light. My sister had her ablation done in May and she can't be happier, like a new person. And believe it or not my oldest sister finally listened to us and she is having her ablation done this Friday. And they are both non-celiac. Good luck. it is so worth it. Esp we you know you are having no more children. Lorrie

Hi Darcy,

I had this done about 7 years ago along with the removal of a couple of fibroids. I had sometimes only 8-10 days of non bleeding a month. The rest was spotting and 2 full weeks of true bleeding. It has been wonderful! I barely need a panty liner if anything, even 7 years latter. You'll do great!

I was surprised to find this topic here. I had never heard of Celiacs until the Dr told me he wanted to test for it yesterday. I woke up looking like I have chickenpox, but I had them as a child. The Doc made an off hand comment about "not having the stomache problems, but we'll test you anyway". I always just assumed the stomache issues, headaches, etc etc were just me, just the way it was... bad diet, too much\not enough exercize, stress. Now that I see all the symptoms in one neat list that reads like this is my life? Wow. And I have to wonder if there isn't a relationship to the long periods as well. I fought with those symptoms until I just couldn't live with them anymore before the ablasion.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.. see Susan it is better than a hysterectomy!

I am also having my tubes tied.. figured since I had to go into an ambulatory surgery center at the hospital might as well get that done too.. both will be a relief to have it done and over with...

Susan this is the procedure and method my doctor is using:

Hi and thank you very much for your detailed response! I am so glad that the protocol worked so well for you and helped you to get your health back on track. I've heard of it helping other people too. One question I have is how did you maintain your weight on this diet? I really rely on nuts and rice to keep me at a steady weight because I tend to lose weight quickly and am having a hard time envisioning how to make it work, especially when not being able to eat things like nuts and avocados. In case you have any input, woud be great to hear it! Friendly greetings.

I was not taking any medications previous to this. I was a healthy 49 yo with some mild stomach discomfort. I noticed the onset of tinnitus earlier this year and I had Covid at the end of June. My first ‘flare-up’ with these symptoms was in August and I was eating gluten like normal. I had another flare-up in September and then got an upper endo at the end of September that showed possible celiac. My blood test came a week later. While I didn’t stop eating gluten before I had the blood test, I had cut back on food and gluten both. I had a flare-up with this symptoms after one week of gluten free but wasn’t being crazy careful. Then I had another flare-up this week. I think it might have been caused by Trader Joe’s baked tofu which I didn’t realize had wheat. But I don’t know if these flare-ups are caused by gluten or if there’s something else going on. I am food journaling and tracking all symptoms. I have lost 7 pounds in the last 10 days.

Welcome to the forum, @Hmart! There are other medical conditions besides celiac disease that can cause villous atrophy as well as some medications and for some people, the dairy protein casein. So, your question is a valid one. Especially in view of the fact that your antibody testing was negative, though there are also some seronegative celiacs. So, do you get reactions every time you consume gluten? If you were to purposely consume a slice of bread would you be certain to develop the symptoms you describe?

I only went on the multi vitamin AFTER a couple of year of high dose, targeted supplementation resolved most of my deficiencies.  I was on quite a cocktail of vitamins that was changed every 6 months as my deficiencies resolved.  Those that were determined to be genetic are still addressed with specific doses of those vitamins, minerals and amino acids. I have an update on my husband and his A Fib.  He ended up in the hospital in August 2025 when his A Fib would not convert.  He took the maximum dose of Flecainide allowed within a 24 hour period.  It was a nightmare experience!  They took him into the ER immediately.  They put in a line, drew blood, did an EKG and chest Xray all within minutes.  Never saw another human for 6 hours.  Never got any results, but obviously we could see he was still in A fib by watching the monitor.  They have the family sign up for text alerts at the ER desk.  So glad I did.  That is the only way we found out that he was being admitted.  About an hour after that text someone came to take him to his room on an observation floor.  We were there two hours before we saw another human being and believe it or not that was by zoom on the TV in the room.  It was admissions wanting to know his vaccine status and confirming his insurance, which we provided at the ER desk.  They said someone would be in and finally a nurse arrived.  He was told a hospitalist was in charge of his case.  Finally the NP for the hospitalist showed up and my husband literally blew his stack.  He got so angry and yelled at this poor woman, but it was exactly what he needed to convert himself to sinus rhythm while she was there.  They got an EKG machine and confirmed it.  She told him that they wanted to keep him overnight and would do an echo in the morning and they were concerned about a wound on his leg and wanted to do a doppler to make sure he did not have a DVT.  He agreed.  The echo showed everything fine, just as it was at his annual check up in June and there was no DVT.  A cardiologist finally showed up to discharge him and after reviewing his history said the A Fib was due to the Amoxicillan prescribed for his leg wound.  It both triggers A Fib and prevents the Flecainide from working.  His conversion coincided with the last dose of antibiotic getting out of his system.  So, make sure your PCP understands what antibiotics you can or cannot take if susceptible to A Fib.  This cardiologist (not his regular) wanted him on Metoprolol 25 mg and Pradaxa.  My husband told him that his cardiologist axed the idea of a beta blocker because his heart rate is already low.  Sure enough, it dropped to 42 on the Metoprolol and my husband felt horrible.  The pradaxa gave him a full body rash!  He went back to his cardiologist for follow up and his BP was fine and heart rate in the mid 50's.  He also axed the Pradaxa since my husband has low platelets, bruises easily and gets bloody noses just from Fish Oil  He suggested he take Black Cumin Seed Oil for inflammation.  He discovered that by taking the Black Seed oil, he can eat carbs and not go into A Fib, since it does such a good job of reducing inflammation.   Oh and I forgot to say the hospital bill was over $26,000.  Houston Methodist!
