Cold And Flu Season

So cold and flu season is coming. Ugh! What do you do to prepare yourself for this germy time of year? What do you do if you feel a cold coming on? I definitely have that feeling right now. Anything that would help? Thanks in advance!

Have you ever tried Emergen-C? It won't get rid of a cold, but it might give your immune system a boost so you can fight it off quicker. I've also taken Vitamin C tablets with rose hips.

I usually get at least two or three colds every year... I'm hoping my immune system will work better now that it's not being overwhelmed with dairy, gluten, and corn proteins :)

Sounds simple, but to help prevent colds--wash your hands often. It's the first thing I do after coming in the house after being out in public. Keeping your hands away from your face also helps, as does eating well, doing your best to avoid stress, and getting plenty of sleep.

Using a Neti Pot is wonderful, especially this time of year when the air is drier. It acts to moisturize the nasal passages and flush out excess mucus or bacteria. Colds are viruses, but keeping the nasal passages healthy goes a long way to help your immune system do what it needs to do.

If a cold does sneak past these measures :P , I find things like hot tea with honey, chicken soup, gargling with warm salt water, and plenty of rest help. About the only meds I use for a cold are Tylenol if I'm really achy, and Robitussin Honey Lemon Cough Drops.

Wash hands often, eat natural foods with vitamin C (I like clementines), as that is better than any pill or medicine, and walk OUTSIDE for 45 minutes a day (even if it's raining or snowing, but not if the sidewalk is iced over).

The vitamin D we get from the sun (and you get it even when it's cloudy) is vitally important for fighting off viruses.

I also avoid the flu shot, as the only 2 times I have ever gotten the flu were immediately after getting the flu shot (and those were the only times I ever got the flu shot, too).

Me too. Two times just like you. I rely on vitamin c, zinc and exercise. I also second jerseyangels recommendation of a neti pot and honey lemon tea. My husband swears by massive doses of vitamin c.

Take echinacea at the first sign, it boosts your immune system and lessens the symptoms and the duration. Take as directed for at least a couple of weeks. Also boost your vit C. And no dairy (clogs your head up)or sugar(slows the immune system). OTC's prolong your cold. The body has to fight off the synthetic med's instead of the germs. Also I read not to touch your eyes nor your ears. Germs enter the body that way.

I wash my hands a lot and I have trained myself not to touch my face except at night when I am washing up. If I have a nose itch, I get a tissue or just rub the outside with the back of my hand. Ditto for the eyes. Just rub with the back of my hand if need be.

The rare times I fell a little tingle, I drink some Emergen-C, then I start spraying colloidal silver up my nose and put 2 drops of Oregano oil under my tongue. I do this 3 times a day for 2 - 3 days. Only 1x daily with the Emergen C though or it gives D. I never get sick this way.

What's the deal with colloidal silver? Are we supposed to have colloidal silver in our bodies?

Vitamin C and oregano oil I can understand, though I would think eating them in their natural state would be preferable to a "nutriceutical." But colloidal silver?

What foods would you suggest eating with the flu? I definitely have something right now and I have no idea what to do. Emergen-C and echinacea? I'll do anything to feel better! I absolutely HATE being sick. I'm achy, have a fever, sore throat, feeling freezing and really sweaty-symptoms like that. Any ideas of how to kick this out of my as quickly as possible and what I should eat?

Drink orange juice, hot lemonade, hot ginger tea.

I'm not sure echinacea is a good idea for celiacs, as our immune systems tend to attack US--it might not be the greatest idea to make those reactions stronger.

I guess it depends on the person's immune system.

I suppose if you tend to have colds that hang on for months, your immune system is not functioning properly and does need help.

On the other hand, if you feel reasonably healthy by the 3rd day of a cold (you can go around your normal routine, you just have to blow your nose here and there), then I'd say your immune system did its job and didn't need any help.

Garlic, ginger, and onion are natural anti-virals--but I don't think they strengthen the immune system's attack on oneself.

Kids with autism--who tend to have a very high rate of celiac--tend to not get the little colds and viruses. The theory is that their immune systems are in hyperdrive. Adding echinacea to that doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

My philosophy comes from Mom and Grandma--drink soup and juices, and pee those germs down the toilet and flush'em away!!!!

One of our body's natural means of fighting infections is to raise the body temperature to one that is less hospitable to the germs. That fever just makes us feel crappy. If you are able to sleep and stay hydrated, your body may be able to fight off the infection sooner. If you need to go to work and function as a normal human, you may want to take cold medicine for a few days to feel reasonable. Acetaminaphrin (Tylenol) and other fever reducers help us feel better, in part, by lowering our temperatures back to one with which we are comfortable. The germs can breed better at our normal body temperature, so the cold might last a little longer, but you feel more comfortable while taking the cold medicine. High fevers are not good for the brain. You can search the web for the cut off, but I think the adult's is around 101.

The Vitamins people recommended help the immune system. Pre-diagnosis of Celiac, I used Zicam nasal gel and had good success if I caught the cold early. It is nasal Zinc. Also, if it really is the flu, there is an antiviral med the doctor can give you to fight the flu. I forget the name and don't know if it is gluten-free.

I hope you feel better quickly. Do yourself a favor, and cancel your weekend plans so you can sleep and drink chicken and rice soup. Or, invite mom or sister over and have her bring the ingredients for soup and a couple comedies or chick flicks. Cook your soup then fall asleep while you watch the movie with them.

Garlic, ginger, onions, ZINC. Zinc drops are best, they attack the virus in your throat where it lives, high dose pills canupset your stomach. Homemade lemonade, not storebought: Hot water, ginger root, lemon juice, honey. Remember germs love sugar, so the more sugar you eat or drink, the harder it will be to fight it. I take hyssop tincture to fight colds and eyebright for when I'm really stuffy, helps clear the stuff out. Neti pot is good for soothing and clearing sinuses.

      @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

      No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

      @Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test.       I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played

      Wondering if anyone knows whether Lindt chocolate balls are gluten free. The Lindt Canadian website says yes but the Lindt USA website says no. The information is a bit confusing.
