Hiya Brenda.....and Welcome  :D

Is it ok if I ask how long you stayed on the SCD previously. I'm just thinking if you stayed on the SCD (with your modifications of course) for a little while, maybe you soon could tolerate more and more food. Boy, I never thought I could eat cheese and nuts (yikes!) so soon, but it happened. I really hope you see results quickly so you can expand your diet and enjoy  :)

Take care, Misa

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Gosh, I don't even remember how long I tried it. I think it was only a couple of weeks. I had low energy even when I started. So for it to stoop so much lower just made life impossible. But, like I said, I may start trying again with having the veggie juice as my carbs. :D

Sorry about the "panty" comment, guys. Guess I had a little built up bitterness going on there.

Thanks for the good wishes.

~Brenda

I have a question about SCD and carbs. I weigh around 117, and am 5'3" tall. How many carbs a day do you think I am suppose to have? I need to know so that I can determine how much carrot juice to drink if I start the SCD back up. It's the only carb I can tolerate. :( I would basically be eating all sorts of different meats, plus the carrot juice, and possible a tiny bit of green beans. And I do mean tiny.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

No apology needed! ;) We all have bad days!!!

I am not sure about the carbs you should ingest. Can you eat dairy at all?? Cheese would help if you are not wanting to lose weight. Plus nut butters, etc. Make sure the peanut butter is all natural and just ground nuts. Keeping the weight on should not be an issue if you are getting enough ~ even if it is just meat and different proteins. Can you tolerate fruit juice?? That would help as well. I make a shake out of frozen ripe bananas and orange juice. Yummy!!! I love apples dipped in peanut butter ~ we picked some off of our trees last night, and that was my dessert. SO good!! :)

There is a connection in some between Celiac and psoriasis. I've seen some articles on it. If you are interested in it, I can send you some info...

I can't do dairy, with the exception of a little bit of mild cheddar cheese. Hardly enough to equal much carbs. With the gastroparesis, I can't hardly get over a thousand calories a day anyway. I have no idea how I'm not dropping weight. But I'm not. I'm steady. Not dropping, not gaining.

I can't do fruit juices at all. Anything acidic is a BIG problem for me. I often dream about them though. :(:)<_<:o

I didn't think nut butters were good sources of carbs. ??

Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I'm open to any and all. :)

Yeah, it is a bit difficult to get a MASSIVE amount of carbs on this diet unless you really try, but just make sure you continue to eat all of the fruits and veggies you can and I don't know all of the nutrition info on the homemade yogurt, but I am sure it has good carbs. ALso, if your body isn't getting enough calories per day,

you go into "starvation" mode where you don't lose weight, in fact you hold onto everything you put in your body, so that may be why you aren't dropping weight. Oh, raisins are really good source of carbs!

Well....thanks for bursting my bubble!! And I thought I was keeping this weight on because I was now healthy. Heehee.....not really, I know it's not true. But in everyone else's eyes, it is! As long as I don't start to look rail thin again, people generally leave me alone about my weight.

Well, I know carrot juice has lots of natural sugar. So I am getting very tempted to just get an assortment of meats, so that I don't get bored, and drink the carrot juice and see if I feel an improvement. What can a little experiment like that hurt anyway?

Ooohhh...can't do raisins. I used to hate raisins. Now I'd KILL to have a handful. I sooooo crave salads and veggies and fruits. Dream, dream, dreeeeeaaam, dreeeeeeeeeeeeammm..........(can you hear the tune?). :)

It's late. I'm goofy.

Why can't you have raisins?

floridanative Community Regular

I saw my derm. last week. He had to give me a new topical solution (for bad psorsisis) as the steroid one that works great is not good to use long term. He is the one who found out I was anemic (other docs missed it) so he asked how I was and I told him about my malabsorption problem and upcoming tests. So he said 'oh, then when you get that settled and start absorbing properly again your psorisis should go away'.

Let's hope he's right!

I am so excited for you that you are starting SCD. I believe you are going to be amazed at how much better you feel in a short amount of time. Good luck (and eat all of the chocolate your body can handle because you won't be able to eat it for a while!!)

jenvan Collaborator

thanks girl! i am usually pretty disciplined and motivated...but i think i'm going to need some accountability on this one! i am hoping to make some scd baked goods this weekend to carry me through. still haven't been able to find the DCC. wish we could eat plain regular yogurt...

Hi Matilda ~ About the burgers - I just mold and pat them... have never had a problem with them falling apart. Make sure the bottom is cooked really well before flipping them over ~ maybe that would help.

About your other issues ~ sounds like now would be the perfect time to start the SCD! It doesn't sound like you are healing or feeling better the way you are eating now, so something needs to change. I am 42 as well, and can't imagine weighing 112!! Eeek! I would be WAY too thin. AND, if you are wanting to get pregnant, you really need to put on some weight. Are you ovulating?? You will want to make sure you get plenty of cheese for the calcium, and meat for protein.

Fresh salads with the SCD mayo for dressing taste really well. The "D" should stop after a week or two. I get D like what you described occasionally too ~ it is NOT fun or attractive.

Hang in there and let us know what you decide to do. :)

PreOptMegs Explorer

I agree! Start SCD ASAP! I think the "oil" in your stool is all of the fat that your body is not absorbing... just going straight through the body.

dperk Rookie

I've been gluten-free for 7 months now. And I started the SCD diet about 3 months ago. I am finely gaining some weight, and feeling really good. I am very glad I started the diet.

Matilda -

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. If I were you, I would listen to my body and compile a list of core "safe" foods and stick to just those for a while. I can't remember if you have any other intolerances, but what works really well for me are cheese, eggs, bananas, peanut butter, and meats. The bonus is that these are really filling, and I don't get tired of them. When I'm having a rough time, I scale back everything else until I feel like I'm back under control. Hopefully your safe list contains enough calorie-heavy foods that the weight-loss will stop.

That being said, if you feel like you were doing better on starchy things - try one at a time. Maybe you can tolerate some better than others. I seem to react worse to potatoes than rice, for instance. Also, it seems like I can cheat occasionally with refined sugar and be ok, but corn sends me right to the restroom. What's most important right now is getting your weight back. Find the foods that make your body happy.

Just as a reminder, you might lose weight the first week or so on SCD, but if you eat the cheese, nuts, and all of the other calorie dense goodies, you will definately gain and feel great!!!!!

When starting the diet, I believe it is essential to just eat the carrot soup they have recommended in the book. IT definately cleans out all of the bad stuff...

julie5914 Contributor

At the recommendation of so many of you, I have just bought the Breaking the Vicious Cycle book and plan to start the diet this Sunday (I'm waiting beause we're on a tight grocery budget and need to finish this week's menu before I can buy more food). Geez, was it so expensive for everone else?? I was thinking something like $6 and it was $22!

I hope it will be worth it - I felt great for the first 2 months gluten free, and now I am feeling awful again - pain in the abdomen, weakness, achy muscles, burping and crazy C and D switching, almost as bad as before I went gluten free. Any tips before I start are most welcome. Do I really have to make my own yogurt? I am not a good cook...

PreOptMegs Explorer

It is super simple to make your own yogurt and in my opinion it is ABSOLUTELY essential. If you have any questions please ask and yes this will be the hardest diet you will ever be on in your life, but it is so worth it!

I think the probiotic effect is the most important thing about yogurt. Taking an acidophilus supplement should help if you can't or don't have time to make it. I have the yogurt on and off, depending on my schedule (things are crazy at work right now!) - but I take my probiotics regularly. You should be able to find a good probiotic supplement at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, or another specialty food/health store.

One thing that I think is definitely worth the time and effort to make at home is soup. It's really easy - it just takes about ten minutes of prep and then you can let is simmer for a few hours. It's great for you and very soothing when your system is out of whack.

Let me know if you need any recipes for stuff - you'll probably have to do more cooking than you'd like on this diet - but try it for a month and see how your body responds. If it's worth it, you shouldn't have any trouble sticking with it.

It has been the most terrible illness ever! Going on 3 weeks now… I had chicken pox as a kid… crazy how much havoc this dormant virus has caused after being reactivated! No idea what even caused it to fire back up. I’m scared this pain and sensitivity is just never going to improve or go away

OKJmartes. Skin and eyes. Also anxiety and frustration. I have read that Celiacs have more skin problems than people who do not have Celiacs. I take increased levels of Vit. D3, very high levels of B12 and an eating part of an avocado every day. KnittyKitty and others here can add what they take for skin health. A Dermatologist might identify the type of skin condition. By eyes you may mean eyesight problems not just irritated, red eyes. It is not very difficult to get a diagnosis of which eye condition is affecting your vision but much more difficult to find an effective remedy. The ophthalmologists I have seen have been only a little helpful. There seems to have been some advances in eye treatments that most of them are completely ignorant of or just won't add to their treatment plans.  Forcertain you may as well buy some remedy from a facebook ad but that is obviously risky and may actually damafe your eyes. However it is known that certain supplements , taken at the effectivelevels do help with eyesight. Two of them are Luten and zanthamin (spelling?)and certain anti-oxidants such as bilberry..    Hope this helps.

I refused to do the gluten challenge for a long time because I knew how sick I would be: I have always had and still have positive antibodies and have so many symptoms my  GI was 💯 sure I would have a positive biopsy. I didn’t want to make myself sick to get a negative biopsy and be more confused by all this.  He couldn’t guarantee me a negative biopsy meant no celiac bc there may not be damage yet or it’s possible to miss biopsies where there’s damage but he was so sure and convinced me I needed that biopsy I went back on gluten. It was a terrible experience! I took pictures of the bloating and swelling and weight gain during the challenge. I gained 9 pounds, looked pregnant, was in pain , couldn’t work or function without long naps and the brain fog was debilitating. And in the end he didn’t get a positive biopsy… so I wish I had never wasted my time or health going through it. I haven’t been truly straightened  out since and I am currently battling a shingles infection at 43 and I can’t help but wonder if the stress I put my body under to try and get an official diagnosis has caused all this. Best of luck to you - whatever you decide. It’s not a fun thing to go through and I still don’t have the answers I was looking for
    • Scott Adams
It's completely understandable to struggle with the gluten challenge, especially when it impacts your health and studies so significantly. Your experience of feeling dramatically better without gluten is a powerful clue, whether it points to celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. It's very wise of you and your doctor to pause the challenge until your holidays, prioritizing your immediate well-being and exams. To answer your questions, yes, it is possible for blood tests to be negative initially and become positive later as the disease progresses, which is why the biopsy remains the gold standard. Many, many people find the gluten challenge incredibly difficult due to the return of debilitating symptoms, so you are certainly not alone in that struggle. Wishing you the best for your exams and for obtaining clearer answers when you're able to proceed.
    • Scott Adams
It's smart that you're seeing the gastroenterologist tomorrow. While it's possible this is a severe and persistent inflammatory reaction to gluten, the fact that the pain is movement-dependent and localized with tenderness is important for your specialist to hear. It could indeed be significant inflammation, but it's also worth ruling out other overlapping issues that can affect those with celiac disease. Is it possible you got some gluten in your diet somehow? This could be a possible trigger. Hopefully, tomorrow's appointment will provide clearer answers and a path to relief so you can get back to your lectures and enjoy your weekend. Wishing you all the best for the consultation.
