I have heard many say that cutting out dairy helps intestinal healing quicker. Any study facts behind this, or is this just opinion? also does cutting out dairy mean, rice milk too?

The reason people recommend cutting out dairy is because lactase (the enzyme needed to digest lactose, the sugar in cow's milk dairy products) is produced at the tips of your villi. If your tips are damaged due to celiac disease, then you're better off avoiding dairy for a while. This includes things like yogurt, milk, cheese, sour cream, ice cream, etc... Some of these have more lactose than others. So... you might find that hard cheese is OK, but milk makes you gassy and bloated.

Rice milk is a non-dairy beverage, but watch out for Rice Dream. It has tiny amounts of barley.

dang it, thanks so much, rice dream is what I drink, never had a reaction that i'm aware of, but don't want to take any chances either. Any suggestions on other rice milks that taste good?

If you don't react to nuts, you may want to try almond milk. I prefer it to rice milk. Also there's a new coconut milk that is a sub for dairy milk; I forget who makes it, but it's supposed to be delicious. :)

I am confused on the Rice Dream. I have never had a reaction to it and as far as their website goes, it's gluten free.

Yeah... that's what they claim... but you can find a lot of threads on this website about the dangers of Rice Dream. Almond milk is delicious if you can have nuts! "So Delicious" makes the coconut milk that you can just pour and drink... yummy :P It comes in plain and vanilla. They also make non-dairy ice cream that I've heard is very good.

Rice dream doesn't bother me either. The .002 or whatever possible left over Barley enzyme must not be enough to set me off and I react to anything that bothers me. Its a personal decision. I do prefer Almond milk and drink it almost everyday because of taste. I buy the rice dreams eggnog at Christmas (very yummy)

now does the almond milk taste like almond, cause I don't like almonds, but i have seen several posts about how almond milk tastes good? I like anything that tastes closed to regular milk :)

just make sure that you are on a good gluten-free calcium supplement with Vitamin D if you cut out the dairy. don't want bone problems on top of everything else.

Well I dumped my rice dream down the sink, luckily I had back up. I had bought a Trader Joe's version of rice milk vanilla, it was awesome! And it's said to be gluten-free. So if you have a TJ's in your area, I highly recommend it.

Almond milk is awesome, but if you don't like almonds I don't think you will like it. You could always do Hemp milk. Never tried it myself, it doesn't sound right..but I maybe one day I will. Coconut milk too. :D

And honestly, nothing tastes like regular milk, but milk. These rice, almond, hemp, coconut milks are not suppose to be cows milk. I think it's a mental change. But these things taste good and are a good alternative to milk, which might taste yummy still isn't a heathly choice. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck!

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?

Thankyou so much for your words. Its a hard battle when a supposed well known hospital whose celiac " specialist " has down played me because my colon looks fine and put it in my medical and so pcp doesn't take seriously. In their eyes we all carry that gene.Im having alot of bad days trying to be positive because of it.

Your experience is both shocking and critically important for the community to hear, underscoring the terrifying reality that cross-contamination can extend into the most unexpected and invasive medical devices. It is absolutely devastating that you had to endure six months of sickness and ultimately sustain permanent vision loss because a doctor dismissed your legitimate, life-altering condition. Your relentless research and advocacy, from discovering the gluten in MMA acrylic to finding a compassionate prosthodontist, is a testament to your strength in a system that often fails celiac patients. While the scientific and medical consensus is that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin or eyes (as the molecules are too large to pass through these barriers), your story highlights a terrifying gray area: what about a substance *permanently implanted inside the body*, where it could potentially shed microparticles or cause a localized immune reaction? Your powerful warning about acrylic lenses and the drastic difference with the silicone alternative is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing your harrowing journey and the specific, severe neurological symptoms you endure; it is a stark reminder that celiac is a systemic disease, and your advocacy is undoubtedly saving others from similar trauma.
