All My Testing Done, Now I Wait For Gi, Is It Really Celiac?

Amy Joe

Amy Joe Rookie

I am hoping to get some help. Here are all my results. I am told NOT to start diet till after I hear from GI in case he wants me to do the pillcam.

Blood:

Apr 8, B12 @ 187

Apr 13, B12 @ 191

Apr 08, IgA 208.....Transglut IgA 44

I have Hashimoto's and Vitamin D Deficiency, taking 100,000IU per week since 11/08

Biopsy:

Duodenum: Chronic duodenitis with marked villous shortening, crypt hyperplasia and regeneration, and increased mononuclear cell inflammation of surface epithelium and the lamina propria.

Esophagus (distal): Cardiac-type mucosa with focus of intestinal metaplasia. The findings may represent Barrett's esophagus or intestinal metaplasia in the setting og chrinic carditis. No dysplasia indentified.

Plus the hernia....

Is all this Celiac? Will this explain why I can not go a full day with out pain in my right side up under my rib? Why my bones in my legs and arms hurt so bad I can hardly move them? Is this why I am so tired that I sleep about 18 hours per day? Not hungry at all. When I walk up or down stairs it feels like I just ran a marathon? Cold all the time?

I get my Thyroid checked every 3 months. I am on pure synthyroid 175 mcg and my level is ok right now.

I hope you all can help me come to an understanding. My Endo says I need to wait for GI and that it's positive for Celiac.

Will he put me on B12 shots, negative for PA by blood testing done by GI.

Thank you

Amy Joe

You can tend to Barrett's without effecting your gluten free status. It would make you more comfortable.

It does sound like classic Celiac, but you may want the pill cam. I understand it's one of the most conclusive tests that is currently available.

Amy Joe Rookie

Thank you Lisa.

I really don't care what tests need to be done. I just gotta start something to feel better. I have spent 6 month's recovering from Brain Surgery to have this come out of left field.

It all started because of my Vitamin D levels not going up. I guess I got a good Endo whom is on top of stuff but man......all I want to do is go golfing and get back to work.

I hate the thought each time I eat right now. If my food is the cause.....the waiting is a killer! If I could be changing it. The GI was very stern about NOT changing anything till he got back from Vac. and went over all the stuff, which thankfully is Monday.

Thanks

Amy Joe

So sorry that you have had a difficult time recently.

Healing will not take place over a matter of days, to the degree where it will be evident, in my opinion. But, it just a matter of two days. Can you make it. :(

In the mean time, this is the best place to learn about Celiac. Take a walk around and a BIG Welcome.

Welcome to the board! By your test results, it sounds like you will likely have a diagnosis of Celiac from your GI. This is a great resource to help adjust if you end up going gluten free. Many people do significantly better once they get the diagnosis and feel so much better on the gluten free diet.

The villi shortening and the blood work plus the other findings in the biopsy should be enough for your doctor to diagnose you. I don't know why they would want to do a pill cam with a positive biopsy, did the nurse say?

Amy Joe Rookie

No. The GI did when I had my consult. Said he'd do the biopsy but was then concerned about Chron's. Was going on school vacation last week with his kids. Did not want me to change anything till he got back and read the pathology reports. He would then decide if I needed the PillCam.

Hello Amy Joe! I just wanted to drop in, and give you my short version of my story, anyway, after years, most of my adult life, being dianosed with IBS, and all given all the meds, that werent helping by the way, I almost given up. 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with rhumotoid arthritis, and about 3 years ago, my vitamin d levels were almost non existant! which was a puzzler, Im in Arizona, and always in the sun, anyway.... I too was given vitamin d, but 50000 units a week. Well, last October, I started to go gluten free on my own. I have had several colonoscopies, gi scopes, in fact, just had more done couple months ago, my follow up is the first, but, regardless, I am 100% absolutely sure, that gluten was my problem. In fact, after being gluten free since October, I seen my dr. last month, and my Rhumotoid arthritis panels are NORMAL!! and he explained, that he has seen cases in that, because celiac is an auto immune disorder, that when you remove the gluten, that can trigger that effect in people, he has see the arthritis get better, and sometimes its takes time, but I am living proof! also, I seen my endocronologist last week, and my vitamin D is up to halfway normal, I am now ABSORBING the vitamin D, in which before, my body couldnt. And she even said, that it sounds like since I cut out the gluten, my body is healing!!!! Now, I didnt get that positive biopsy that some poeple need, but I dont need it, and, my doctors even agree, that its obvious, Im healing and feeling so much better. In fact, I have only been sick twice since being gluten free, once was because I ate red vines at the movies, and just last friday, my drink was a flavored malt! Anyway, Ill pray for you, and just want to let you know, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! most people here on this board will tell you the same, and even though its tough, I promise, it will get better...

I think I found a huge culprit for severe reactions to create worsening of my c symptoms. Do people with celiac have sensitivity and /or have opposite reaction to certain medications Where can I find a list ?  I'm new here I'm.wondering why I am getting worse when I take certain medicine...the burning feet.  Rebound muscle pain so intense  How many people get opposite effects or have a horrible attack after these meds

Does anyone know if that includes scrambled eggs and healthy smart butter (,gluten free) I add a very tiny amount of margarine less than a teaspoon.  I did no't have any bread    It just seems like no matter what I eat my stomach and nerves over fire and here comes a host of horrible symptoms. My lower abdomen feels horrible, my right leg thigh muscle.. very odd. Jaw pain. Burning feet , joint pain , you name it  The anxiety just creeps up into brain fog. I don't think I could explain this to anyone who is unfamiliar.  Also,  I most likely will not remember posting this until I check it.  This is highly unusual for me because I have an excellent memory.  One weekend before I knew anything about celiac I lost an entire weekend from severe brain fog, confusion, pain, etc.  I honestly thought I was losing my mind. When I think back I recall eating a lot of PBJ sandwiches and turkey sandwiches.  Once again did not know about gluten.  I was just too sick to cook. Do people fast during attacks ?? It seems horrible to keep going through this. I hope I'm not causing my own problems... I wonder if I should fast because I'm not eating gluten .  Chicken ,  scrambled eggs no milk , canned carrots,  gluten free low sugar low fat Greek yogurt which I already posted about 😞 Any suggestions I am open... I am bedridden when this happens to me.  Thank you Celiac community. 🙏🏻❤️

Yeah, that sounds super familiar. When inflammation levels are high — especially at the start of changing your diet — the body often develops a fructose and lactose intolerance. Unfortunately, the only thing that really helps is cutting out anything that isn’t lactose-free or that contains sugar. So basically, stick to meat, veggies, fish…

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you
