SOOO.... I was thinking how nice it would be to just be GLUTEN INTOLERANT. I never knew these other foods (dairy, soy, corn, nightshades, carrots, melon,pork...what else??) were also causing me problems.

Small amounts of those foods SEEM to be O.K on occasion, but I'm really getting fed up with a limited diet of veggies, chicken and tuna. The other day I was craving chips and salsa REALLY bad...something I never crave. SO I went and got some gluten-free GMO free tortilla chips and organic salsa. I had a little bit for two days, and now I'm paying the price. I feel bloated/swollen all over and the worse part is the puffiness in my face (mostly around the sinuses.) I also seem to breakout from corn chips/nightshades (even small amounts)...although it really isnt pimples....more like red rash type of thing. I feel so disgusted I cant even look at my face in the mirror :( not to mention I get major brain fog/irritablilty, so sorry if I'm not making complete sense! ugh! there's just a list of symptoms....I dont feel liek going on...

It's wierd because sometimes these foods don't cause me a problem....but I think it's because I've been sneaking them in my diet more latley...mostly out of frustration with not being able to eat so many things...so i just say "well it wont bother me" but a little bit here and there adds up. And it seems like even though these foods make me feel like crap, I'll still reach for them thinking "well, I already don't feel good so why not." I never used to be like this before....this whole thing is making me realy depressed. I just wish I had a "NORMAL" body.

also curious: does anyone else get swelling from corn or nighshades?? its mostly like a water retention thing for me....but not quite....just wierd to describe....but enough to make me not want to wear my normal clothes...

thanks for letting me vent here....nobody understands me anymore lately!!

I don't swell like you are talking about, bloating yes. Tomatoes are a nightshade, did you know that? If I ate salsa, I would have diarrhea in 20 minutes flat. The only potato chips I eat are UTZ brand. They do not seem to bother me. Corn chips are out, any flavored potato chips are out.

I too eat chicken breast, veggies, occasionally tuna, or cod. No red meats, no nightshades, no grains. I'm not so sure all the other grains bother me themselves, but I do feel they are cross contaminated with gluten. Some people are super sensitive.

This type of venting is always ok, we have to do it somewhere. Some of us do understand how you feel, totally understand.

(((((((((hugs))))))))))) Wish there was some way to help with this, I don't have as many intolerances as you do but the ones I do have make me frustrated too sometimes. The one I hate the most is soy. It drives me crazy that it is in sooooo much. Sometimes I just give in to wanting something as simple as a ranch dressing on a salad. Like you I suffer for it, say I won't do it again but then sure enough the craving gets to be too much and I slater another salad and suffer again for it. Funny I have no problem with craving gluten but my other intolerances I do slip up on. It is hard and it is just not fair. Lots of us do understand and sympathize.

I am curious if anyone else has issues with Maltode xtrin? I get stabbing stomach pains when I have something with it- even when the product says "gluten-free." Thanks

it may be a corn intolerance...I believe they use corn starch for it sometimes...

Thanks! yes, I'm well aware of what nighshades are, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and a few others....even paprika bothers me sometimes-ugh. I make sure any grain I eat is labled gluten-free, but i dont eat them often. It's hit or miss with them bothering me...

now my mom thinks that all my problems may be tied to something else...and that I may not even have a gluten intolerance!!! ugh she keeps mentioning H pilori...but I really doubt it. I havent been sick in over a year since going gluten-free!

I was thnking today.....does anyone else get fed up with trying to explain to people other food issues along with gluten?- so much that you don't even bother to explain after a while? People just don't understand how all these foods that I ate on a regular basis before are bothering me now....I almost feel like typing an explanation up, making copies and carying around with me to give to friends/family etc. instead of having to re-explain myself over and OVER....

Yeah, I seldom mention the other intolerances, except for perhaps soy.

I totally feel you! I am going through this myself. Been gluten free (or attempting to be) since 2007 and only recently have gone dairy and corn free as well. Or rather.. mostly. Haven't eaten any more cheese but did have a few dark chocolates that contained milkfat the other day. Avoiding corn has been harder. I stopped the corn chips and tortillas but there is still modified corn starch in some of my supplements and spices. I'm too exhausted too care anymore. It's depressing. I am hungry all the time and crave everything I can't eat. I am just doing my best, it's all we can do I guess.

Hi there,

Yes, I do have an allergy to nightshade veggies. Bummer isn't it. Yes, my ankles and legs swell. In addition to the nightshade, gluten and soy. I have sensitivities to sugar, aspartame, maltodextrin, dextrose and sucrose, high fructose corn syrup. I could go on and on.

So far, thankfully, i don't breakout but I get the itches so bad my sweetie tells me sometimes he gets a picture of a bear with his back to a tree just a scratching a way because i'll find a corner somewhere and go to trying to scratch my back. Right between my shoulder blades where I can't reach. AAhhhhhh!

I am very sensitive to maltodextrin as well. It is nasty and is found in A LOT of things. It is also used a lot on seasoning in chicken in restaurants. - be careful!!

The bad part about maltodextrin also is that it can be produced with several different ingredients INCLUDING WHEAT and they don't have to specifically list it!!!

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
