Charles Shaw Wines ($2 Chuck)

I've been reading that some wines might have barley added? I've never been bothered by wine before but I had a LITTLE of a Charles Shaw White Zin last night and definitely had symptoms during the night. It's the only thing I can think of that could have caused it. Thoughts?

I use the white routinely in rissoto with no problems. It's a staple in my kitchen for cooking.

We are very sensitive and use 2-Buck Chuck wines frequently with no problems. The only wines we've reacted to were those aged in barrels sealed with wheat or rye paste.

Oh my gosh, I thought ALL wine was gluten-free. Is there a list of non-gluten-free wines anywhere?

Thank you to the original poster for this thread, and thank you nasalady, for your post.

I also had symptoms after eating shrimp and drinking 2 buck chuck white zin a few weeks ago. This was at a potluck, and I thought perhaps the shrimp may have had something in it....it was purchased cooked (I did not purchase it). We have 1 bottle of chuck white zin left, so perhaps I will try it again and see if I get sick. I'm not allergic to shrimp.

Hi Lynayah,

Unfortunately there's no comprehensive list, but what we've done is to call our favorite wineries and ask which wines (if any) are aged in new barrels that have been sealed with wheat or rye paste. For example, at one small winery (Claiborne and Churchill) they only do this with their Pinot Noirs, which made sense to us because that's what we were drinking when we got glutened! :)

Another winery (Kynsi) told us that all of their whites are in stainless steel, so we know we're safe with those.

Here's a link to an older webpage (some of the links therein are broken) about gluten free wines:

Good luck!

P.S. Are any of you who have reacted to wines allergic to casein or eggs? Because I just remembered that those substances (among others) are sometimes used during the "fining" process during wine-making. Here is a link to an old thread where they discuss this subject (from this board):

And a link to a page about the process of fining:

I'm allergic to casein. Last night had more "store bought by someone else" shrimp, and Sutter Home White Merlot, and had no symptoms at all. Since I have so many food issues, am never sure what causes my symptoms. I have recently discovered that Arizona Sweet Tea gives me diarrhea and abdominal pain if I drink more than 1 glass a day, yet I can drink Arizona Caffeine Free Herbal Tea without a problem. Some days I feel like a guinea pig, but each day I learn more and more about what I can eat without a problem, then eat plenty of it.

Thank you to the poster mentioning eggs and casein!!!! Those are both on my intolerance list. I know the feeling if guinea pig as I have so many intolerance that SOMETHING is likely to bother me. But when I stay home and dot own cooking I don't usually have to worry quite so much! Thanks everyone!!

Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

That's great news, you can do this.  Let us know how things go and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. Cristiana 😊
